Around SBN: Hugh Douglas Admits To Stealing From Jaguars

Unlike the other Giants batters, who are trying to learn more discipline at the plate, Lewis is being more aggressive, much to Bochy’s delight. "You want these guys to see a lot of pitches, but Freddy was almost taking it too far,’’ the manager said.

– Bud Selig visited the press box and chatted with reporters. As he was wrapping up, Gaylord Perry walked in smiling wide.

"I want a rule change so I can make a comeback,’’ Perry boomed.

"What rule do we need to change to get you back?’’ Selig said, playing along.

They both laughed. Unless pitchers get permission to soak balls in foreign substances, Perry, 71, will likely stay retired.

Playfully rubbing Perry’s shoulder and cap — areas where the 314-game winner may have concealed greasy kid stuff to throw his notorious spitball — Selig responded, “What rules need to be changed?”

Should be noted

There was a quote in the Bonds hitting coach article that had Lewis missing Bonds, saying that just watching him take batting practice helped him. Fred Lewis- wrong place at the wrong time.

I remember when Bonds visited the park and was on air with the broadcasters hearing a story that BLB took Fred to the cages and spent a lot of time working with him. Lewis’ slump began then and there. Serious, check the time line.

This isn’t about hacking more, it’s about not letting good pitches to hit go by. Fred has watched an awful lot of called 3rd strikes in his short career, and I for one wouldn’t mind seeing him at least foul them off.

by tyrannoman on Mar 15, 2010 5:30 PM PDT reply actions

That would be okay. But I can’t help but think that the reason Bochy got his nads in a bunch over Lewis’ “patient” style was because before last season management decided that Lewis would suddenly become a power hitter. Because saying it makes it so. Except in real life, when it doesn’t. So Fred doesn’t become a power hitter, instead doing the same thing he’s been doing, and that gets him a trip to the bench.

I’m kinda meh on the guy in general, but I do think he’s been treated badly by the team.

I know it was a long time ago, but when Fred was benched he looked awful. When he did make contact, it was a weak groundball or soft liner to left. He wasn’t pulling the ball at all, and wasn’t really even hitting the ball hard. That’s why he was benched, not because he was patient.

by tyrannoman on Mar 16, 2010 2:45 PM PDT up reply actions

I thought I remember somebody breaking down that Fred was hitting something like .280/.355/whatever when he was benched, and only slumped afterward.

I could be wrong.

I don't know about that, to the groin.

by howtheyscored on Mar 16, 2010 4:01 PM PDT up reply actions

If that’s what it’s about, I’m all for it. If Lewis learns the strike zone even better and starts putting what would be called third strikes into play, great. But as far as Bochy goes, I don’t think it is, and that’s what sad. Bochy seems to believe that swinging early and often is good, and that’s a sad thing.

Eagerly anticipating adding to my Giants family.

by giantsfansince1981 on Mar 15, 2010 5:34 PM PDT up reply actions

Well, it seems significant that the sentence above specifically contrasts “discipline” with “being aggressive.” The presumption seems to be that Lewis was “too disciplined” and needs to “stop doing that so much”. Which isn’t exactly a “good thing”.

I don't know about that, to the groin.

Fred Lewis last shot? Plus, the Giants are on TV tomorrow

I chatted with Fred Lewis today about a change he has made at the plate, which he hopes will prevent him from looking at so many called third strikes.

It’s an important time for Lewis. He is out of minor-league options and soon might be out of chances to prove his worth as a major-league player to the Giants, who are giving him every chance. Nobody has had more than the 26 at-bats he’s had in the Cactus League this year.

Lewis said he looked at film this winter and realized he was too far off the plate, so he called new batting coach Hensley Meulens.

“I told him I think I’m taking third-strike pitches away because I’m not seeing them,” Lewis said. “I told him I think I’m too far off the plate and I need to move closer. He said, ‘Try it. If you feel comfortable with it stick with it, because your hands are quick enough to turn on the inside pitches.’”

This spring, Lewis has been fouling off the outside-corner pitches he used to take. He still is learning to trust his hands and is popping up the inside pitch. In time, he believes, he will drive them.

Lewis has been more aggressive this spring, striking out four times in 26 at-bats. Last year, he struck out once every 3.5 at-bats.

So, yeah, Fred knows about his problem with 3rd strikes. Not seeing them would be a big issue.

yea and amen.

Lewis’s big problem is that he looks bad, while not actually being bad at all. Swinging at pitches he shouldn’t coupled with (and usually after) taking good pitches to hit had a lot to do with that.

No one is asking him to get on base less; simply to swing at balls in the zone, especially with two strikes.
