Giants Prospects
I have a few questions for Giants fans for a post I may want to do on my website.
Matt Wieters was one of the most hyped prospects in history and I am wondering about the hype around Buster Posey. If you are familiar with the hype around Wieters, how does the hype around Posey compare to Wieters?
Are you concerned with Bumgarners drop in velocity? Will he get the 5th starter spot to start the season?
I appreciate all the input I can get.
Thank you,
Jordan

I think the hype is pretty serious around Posey, but he’s not as hyped as Weiters was. Both will play good D behind the dish. Both have great hitting ability – Posey a slight bit more of a pure hitter. Posey is probably a bit faster and athletic, and therefore, a bit of a better baserunner. But Weiters has substantially more power than Posey. I think if they both fulfill their potential, Weiters will be one of the best all time and Posey will be one of the best in his generation. Posey is unquestionably the best catcher on our team and would be one of the top rookies in the league, which prompted our moronic front office to resign the guy with the lowest OBP in all of baseball (Molina, Bengie).
There is a very big concern about the drop in velocity w/r/t MadBum’s FB. It hasn’t hurt him so far in his ascent through the minors, but lefties with 88 mph fastballs have a much narrower margin for error than lefties with 93 mph fastballs. This time last year, people were viewing him as a potential #1 starter. That sentiment has waned a bit, and now people are talking about him becoming a #3 or a #2 starter if things break well for him. His offspeed stuff has made a lot more progress than people generally give him credit for, but they’re not plus pitches by any means. He has movement and deception on his fastball, so that IS still a plus pitch, despite the lack of velocity. If the velo comes back, it’s plus, plus. He’s said to be the leading candidate for the #5 spot in the rotation, but there are several others who are also legit candidates (Joe Martinez, Kevin Pucetas, Wellenmeyer…) I’d like to see him in Fresno to start the year, especially since our #5 starter will only make 2 or 3 starts in April due to all the off days.
Hector Sanchez: Underrated. Fighting body bias since the 2009 off season. I still love you, son, even if you're fat.

But I thought Posey was a first baseman?
Gah. I’m upset with this team.

Except I do like Posey more than Wieters. I think Wieters will be better at his peak, but Posey will be better for longer and will ascend and plateau quicker. Over their entire careers, I think Posey has a better chance to put up a higher total WAR considering his general athleticism and work ethic (I don’t know how dedicated Wieters is, but the reports on Posey all say that he’s working just about as hard as possible, and I’ve got to imagine that lengthens your career). Of course, if both change teams mid-career, Wieters will be better for the Orioles than Posey is for the Giants.
And I can’t discount the homegrown All-Star factor; there’s certainly some organizational bias in the selection of Posey over Wieters. Without that, I think it’s a push.
Possible uses for your Steven Johnson: 5th starter, long reliever, batboy, go-fer, food taster. Just keep him on the roster!

Why do you think this? Reports about work ethic tend to be a norm, I’m sure you could find them about Wieters, too, I wouldn’t read too much into them beyond “it’s better than negative reports”. But getting down to an actual Wieters/Posey comparison, Wieters already put up a league average batting line at the MLB level for a season (playing in the AL East, at that), and is projected to be better than Posey, plus he’s supposed to be a good athlete that will play good defense, too. As much as I like Posey, any objective way I try to look at it I can’t come up with a single argument in Posey’s favor – Wieters has a better resume/track record, and better scouting reports….

I really don’t see a single argument to take Posey over Wieters.
Posey may be a slightly better contact hitter, but a lot would say Wieters is the better contact hitter. Wieters will have more power and play better defense. He has put up the same, if not better numbers than Posey in the minors and already produced at the major league level.

play better defense
Dunno about this, though. They seem pretty comparable. I also don’t think the difference between Wieters and Posey is that huge, I really like Posey (and recognize what a talent Wieters is supposed to be) and think they have pretty equal shots at being very good, just with Wieters having a little bit higher ceiling and better probability, and I don’t see the argument for Posey over Wieters. The closest reasonable argument I see is Posey is pretty equal to Wieters.

I love Posey but I have to give the edge to Wieters
Posey is compared to Mauer and Wieters is supposed to be “Mauer plus power”, so I’ll give Wieters the slight edge.
As for Bumgarner we seem to be pretty concerned although with our young pitching depth (Timmy, Cain, Sanchez, Wheeler) the blow is softened a bit. He appears to be our leading candidate to be our #5 starter which surprises me because of Bochy’s distrust in young players and the concerns about Bumgarner’s fastball. He is battling with Wellemeyer, Pucetas, Martinez & Steve Johnson for the #5 starter and most of the people around here seem to want to start the year in Fresno-as do I.

Well, that was a 2009 evaluation. I don’t know if you noticed, but Mauer recently turned into “Mauer plus power”….

I think they have different ceilings.
I feel like Posey can become McCann, but I think Weiters can become Mauer.
But I also think Posey is more likely to hit his ceiling? If that makes sense?

I’m surprised so many people chose posey. I love posey, but wieters is…wieters.

Yeah. People are practically writing Wieters into the Hall of Fame already. Its kinda ridiculous.

Weiters is pretty damn ridiculous. Posey’s great. That’s the delineation for me at 1216am on a day where I had a science lecture.

I don' t know
how many different positions can Wieters play?

Kevin Goldstein hasn’t called Posey the best catcher in Major League Baseball, but there is still plenty of spring training left for him to anoint him with that.

How's the mood in Charm City?
Are folks gearing up for another season of 60-70 wins or is this the year people think they will bust through? I know there has been some anxiety over Brian Roberts, but are the O’s generating buzz?

Fwiw, the old Orioles hat (black, white orange expo’s style) is awesome. It’s not the old Pirates cap, but it’s still pretty damn cool.
Camden’s pretty sweet too. Thx for stopping by and trade us Adam Jones for Aaron Rowand.

I like the hats/jerseys a lot.
Camden is a sick stadium. No problem, I enjoy talking to fans of NL teams. Jones >>>> Rowand! Sorry.
by Jordan Tuwiner on Mar 17, 2010 5:29 PM PDT up reply actions
Oh, the Rowand thing was a joke. We also don’t have another player on the roster that looks like he’s taking a dump when he hits. He’s damn near irreplaceable :-(
I think you guy’s are getting close. I’ve always kind of liked the Orioles and conversely despise both the Sox and the Yankees. I’d love for you guys to become a player in that division.
Now I do have some complaints about Baltimore/the Orioles. Please do offer your feedback.
1.) Angelos strikes me as a sleazy, tort attorney. Oh wait. I really hate that guy.
2.) Boog Powell’s BBQ is super over-rated.
3.) Why do you guys have to put down other crab and crab cakes. I’m from Oregon (Dungeness country) and I’ll admit that Blue crab is probably my favorite crab meat for cakes and I really think the Saltine, Old Bay recipe is dialed in. Good stuff, but why do they have to put down other crabbing regions and other styles of crab cakes? I have some good friends from surrounding Baltimore (Sparks, MD mostly.) Totally fantastic guys, great friends, but they start getting all arrogant about their crab cakes and I just want to punch them in the face.
4.) What can we do to help Utz get better distribution on the west coast? Not the crab chips though. You can keep them.
5.) Can you kidnap someone important in Baltimore, hold them for ransom and make them bring back the Wire for another season? That would be a real solid.
Always a fun town. Certainly you need to stay alert, but I’ve always enjoyed my visits. Cheers!

Glad to hear you dont like the Yankees/Red Sox
1) I don’t like Angelos much either. Most O’s fans don’t like him.
2) Ehhh, it’s alright, probably is overrated.
3) Not a big fan of crab cakes so I’m not the guy to talk to about that, lol.
4) Try visiting their factory? Not a big fan of Utz either.
5) You could try!
If you ever have other questions about Baltimore or the Orioles you can stop by CamdenChat and comment in the open threads!
I’ll get a good look at Thomas Neal next year if I see the Giants AA team in Bowie. I’ll have video that you’d probably like to see.

The year Camden Yards opened Boog’s BBQ was really incredible, but it almost immediately went into a major decline and I guess has been living off that initial fame ever since. And actually, not living off it too well, because I never see lines there anymore. There’s really very little decent food at Camden at this point, I suppose because the crowds are so thin there’s not that much incentive in it for the vendors to really put money into having a quality product.
My Bucardo is better than yours.
A hot August weekday, before a small crowd, when the only thing at stake is the tissue-thin difference between a thing done well and a thing done ill. Insofar as the clutch hitter is not a sportswriter's myth, it is a vulgarity, like a writer who writes only for money.
That would explain it, Roger. I was there in like 03 or 04, so it probably was well after that decline. My friend and his pops were taking to the game and they couldn’t shut up at the BBQ. They were treating me to the game, so I acted like it was delicious. In reality it wasn’t tender, flavorful, succulent; all the things that any good BBQ.
Thx for the reply, Ravensfan. Good luck with the ’10 season.
