To be clear. There is always something to be gained by consumption of the written word. However, the print industry gave up all pretense of objective journalism quite some time ago….and their relevance has been in decline ever since.

I’m not really sure why I read the chronicle sports section, but I do. I suppose most of the news/box scores I can see on the internet earlier, and it’s not like I’m reading it for the great insight like: Posey isn’t ready, Molina is a gamer and a good hitter, Rowand plays hard, Fred Lewis sucks, Lincecum should pitch until his arm falls off, etc.

Yes. It contains only one player who really ought to be hitting in the middle of a lineup and one player who can hit for a very high average. Sadly, it’s the same guy.

The lineup lacks a legit leadoff guy, a legit #4 hitter, a legit SS, a legit 1B and really only has one or two guys who you can say would start for any team in the league….hint, one of them is pitching today.

went to see FSU vs. Virginia last night

FSU had an 8-3 lead going into the 9th and then blew it and lost 9-8. Top of the ninth inning took 45 minutes, with three pitching changes and two injury delays. Then, in the bottom of the ninth, the last out came on a baserunning blunder.

It reminded me of the Giants. Except for the part about scoring eight runs.

Actually, not so much. They really deserved to lose. Their pitching was pretty poor – they didn’t get a single 1-2-3 inning the whole game. And their starter, Cody Winiarski, was maddening to watch. Allowed tons of baserunners, and when there were baserunners, he through to first or stepped off the mound as often as he pitched, it seemed. Slowest pitcher ever.

Their hitting was better – I haven’t heard the names elsewhere, but the guy who had the best day was Steven Proscia, their third baseman, and Kenneth Swab, their first baseman. But most of their productin came in that ninth inning, when the FSU bullpen was just self-destructing. Earlier in the game, FSU did a pretty good job of shutting Virginia’s offense down. They only scored 3 through the first eight innings, despite making occasional loud contact.
