Jesus Guzman tells Lider en Deportes' Carlos Rodriguez that he has received no guarantee of making the Giants' opening day roster, but he has received another sort of guarantee from manager Bruce Bochy: Whatever chance he has will be in the outfield, as opposed to the infield, where Guzman has almost exclusively played in the past. After three brief callups in 2009, the Giants designated the 26-year-old Venezuelan for assignment to make room for Bengie Molina this offseason, then invited him back to spring training. Last season at Triple A Fresno, Guzman put up a .321/.379/.507 line in 500 PA while playing mostly first base.

We could call this the Velez career path. Years in the minors playing IF, then they decide he does not do it well enough. Velez’ year in AA, he made the allstar team at 2B, then was playing OF by the time the game was played.
Guzman was in outfield a bit last Spring, I don’t remember how bad he was.

cheering for Adam Witter, who will hit bigleague dingers some day.

I don't know how well he played in the infield

but I believe he was pretty poor at 1B which should be the easiest position to play

Adopted Giant: Mike Krukow.

I think that’s largely dependent on how fast you are. Slow guys probably play 1B better than Guzman would, but the outfield would be a better position for a guy who’s a little faster and a little worse at fielding; picking a throw in the dirt is probably harder than a ground ball by the time it gets out of the infield. Guzman hasn’t shown a lot of speed on the basepaths, but maybe he’s quick enough to be a corner OF.

Possible uses for your Steven Johnson: 5th starter, long reliever, batboy, go-fer, food taster. Just keep him on the roster!

Kind of in this boat. He smells like a left fielder to me. Of coarse tht only means there is DeRosa, Torres, Velez, Lewis, Nate and Pill ahead of him on the Botchey Depth Chart™ … amiright?

Threat level that the 2010 Pads finish with more wins than the 2010 Giants is currently at - 25%

Randy Winn, come back!

Rooting for Jose Casilla to take his K- and GB-inducing skills to the majors and join his brother.

Waiting for an old fart to go on the DL

I have finally accepted the fact that I will never win a McCoven award.

Weren’t they going to try Ishi in the outfield too?

co-dad w/AfDC of
Ishikawa, the Topps Rookie All Star Team's First baseman. Does he get a chance in 2010?

Because the outfielder situation isn't enough of a clusterfuck

A start for Kevin Pucetas is a start for Not Bumgarner. And don't you want Not Bumgarner in the Giants rotation?

Yeah, he doesn’t have a future at 1b. Not only does he stink there, he has to deal with Huff, TI, Bowker and now even Posey. During the season you’re probably going to see DeRosa there as well. LF is crowded as well, but when your starting LF is capable of playing almost anywhere, you have more of a chance.

Dumped Edgar Renteria and adopted Buster Posey. Biggest upgrade since George Jefferson moved up to a deluxe apartment on the east side!

Huff, TI, Bowker and maybe Posey blocking his path vs. DeRosa, Velez, Torres, Lewis, Nate, Bowker, Ish and Pill……. and since Huff, TI, and Bowker all hit lefty.. well it seems to me like he had a better shot of cracking the big league roster at some point this year playing 1B.

But where will Matty and Felipe play?

I know you nerds know NOTHING about the real game of baseball, or any other athletic endeavor requiring teamwork under physical stress.

Kind of makes sense if you concede that: a) he doesn’t hit well enough to play 1B; and b) he’s a bad fielder at 1B. Why not see if he can play a decent OF, where his bat will be more valuable, and a better compliment to all the part-time, left-handed hitting OFs already on the roster (Lewis, Bowker, Schierholtz, Baron Pickoff von Ironglove).

Hector Sanchez: Underrated. Fighting body bias since the 2009 off season. I still love you, son, even if you're fat.

I thought the ability to disguise a poor glove in the outfield stops at around the 9-10 year old division in summer rec league.

Hitting 74 on the radar gun but hitting my spots.
