Intrasquad game: What side are you on?
Baggs posted the intrasquad lineups for today. What team looks stronger to you? Personally, I think squad Posey will be making tougher outs, but a lineup of Bowker-Neal-Pill-Kieschnitwhatever has some pretty beastly power potential.
Also interesting to note that Posey, who apparently needs to catch more games, is DHing.

This made me laugh…and then cry. =/
I choose Team Steffes.

can't risk passed balls
in a big game like this. It’s magic in this pennant race!
Giants pitching coach Dave Righetti. "I treat Timmy differently from most pitchers: I leave him alone."
Bengie Molina: "I don't understand why they didn't want to commit to another year, with my numbers and my experience and things like that." Brain Sabean: "He's certainly welcomed back with open arms".

I saw that too
Guzman has terrible defense at 1B so they stick him in LF…meanwhile Downs who I assume needs to learn to play more positions to seperate himself from the Rohlingers and Frandsens is playing 1B. Does not make sense

The Giants rarely if ever make sense..
Downs has played 387 professional games from Short Season A through 3A, at the following positions.
2B 195
3B 101
RF 20
SS 14
1B 48
LF 9
Check the sig line
Matt Downs MLB , Now with More STATZ goodness !Matt Downs Fangraphs The Juan Uribe of 2011 !
Yeah give him some Corner OF experience
Weren’t they stressing Versatility this year? I think the ability to play LF, which RR & Frandsen can’t would’ve gone a long way to helping him this year.

Baggs is actually tweeting from the game, including some short flip cam You Tube clips (so far of two walks, unfortunately missed Ford’s triple and Bowker’s HR).
My Bucardo is better than yours.
A hot August weekday, before a small crowd, when the only thing at stake is the tissue-thin difference between a thing done well and a thing done ill. Insofar as the clutch hitter is not a sportswriter's myth, it is a vulgarity, like a writer who writes only for money.
Thanks!
Buster needs to be more aggressive!

One of the few good things that Twitter has done in terms of news coverage (where I think Twitter – a fun diversion – should not be used in any way) was that when the earthquake hit Haiti and virtually all communication was lost, we were still able to get updates from people in the country via Twitter. And Facebook. I remember thinking, “Oh.”
I don't know about that, to the groin.

Thinking about it, though, I’m not sure why somebody would be able to use Twitter and not something else useful to establish contact… However, every news report I saw the day of cited twitter updates as one of their vital sources of information. So… I don’t know… I think I stopped having a point here a long time ago.

I’m going with team Clark.
Also, Guzman in left field? Because his bad defense will be more hidden there? Oh, because we have Aubrey Huff blocking all comers at first base. That’s right.

Clark
I agree. Clark is a winner. He doesn’t lose. Never bet against Clark.

He’s back‽
The repetition is awesome. I think I’ll just start copying other people’s posts verbatim.
Thou shalt not throw a fastball to Bowker
Big league pitchers already knew that, now Tanner will too.
Win the inning.
?? You mean he has, right? Bam Bam is the one that re-worked Bowker and help make him patient.

by say hey nation on Mar 1, 2010 12:50 PM PST up reply actions
That is a good question. Bam Bam had a career OBP of .288 and took 0.25 BB/9. Maybe the fact that he was historically bad at getting on base makes him super-quallified to teach young hitters how to be patient. I just don’t know.
Don’t assume that bad hitter=bad coach or good hitter=good coach how many hitting legends went on to become great hitting coaches?
Maybe that’s not fair b/c hitting legends probably make enough not to work again. But the point still stands.

I think that is fair assuming he actually uses his own playing experience as a model of exactly what not to do. It might work, and I guess Bowker is an example of how it might. But color me skeptical.
Maybe he was a poor hitter in general so pitcher weren’t afraid to through him strikes?

Hard to argue with that. With a career line of .220 .288 .353, it is safe to say he just plain sucked.
But remember, motivated people without talent (Meulens obviously has more talent than all of us) are probably the best coaches in theory. Because they try and try to do things right and are under constent coaching themselves until they give up and become coaches.
My career path, have you seen it?
by say hey nation on Mar 1, 2010 1:17 PM PST up reply actions
Agreed. By the way, it has been kind of fun to look at Bam-Bam’s career #’s. 1991 was the one season he actually had more than 300 PAs. His numbers that season were quite remarkably bad. His line was .222/.276/.319. His BB% was 5.8% and his K% was 33.7%. His BB/K ratio was 0.19 which put him behind only 3 other players that season (with at least 250PA). They were Pudge, Andujar Cedeno, and Sammy Sosa. Wow Sosa sucked before ’roids. Wade Boggs led the league that year with 2.78.
I’ve heard that Muelens is focusing on being more patient and more selective with the young hitters. Yeah, he sucked as a player, but I don’t think that translates to his coaching ability. A lot of teachers would actually suck at doing what they teach, but they’re good at teaching how to do it.

It’s not just that he sucked. Plenty of coaches suck. It’s just that he particularly sucked at taking walks (and striking out). That happens to be an area of need within the organization so it takes a nuanced view to be able to compute him as the choice, but I do agree that his complete ineptitude could be a teaching asset. It also might be one of those things where the student will not take the teacher seriously because the teacher has no cred.
They only played about 3 innings, which sucks because I called out from work for the afternoon as soon as I saw the lineup!
Ford ripped a triple to leadoff for his squad, then Franny knocked him in with actual situational hitting. Bowker’s shot barely stayed fair, but it was deep.
Tanner got roughed up, while Clark looked sharp. Pena wasn’t very impressive (beaned Adrianza), and Cota was bringing heat. Frandsen and Bowker were able to get contact off him, but both went for outs.
Neal reached on a deflection off the pitcher, then stole 2nd to show off his newfound wheels, and then got thrown out at 3rd trying to advance on a ball to short. Adrianza made a nice play to throw him out, it wasn’t even close.
Oh yeah, there was a Hector Sanchez sighting. He worked the count full, but then struck out looking at a slider from Cota (I think it was Cota).
Beaned him?
Did he get hit twice? I only saw the one in the thigh…
