I know it’s spam, but I wanted to hear what McC’s opinion on this way. I never really thought one way or another about collusion and Bonds, but man, not many guys go out at that level of performance. Without injury or desire to retire, you’d have to think that someone with a 169 OPS+ in his last season could find work the next year.

I’m pretty convinced he was colluded out at this point.

I don’t see any way it was anything other than collusion.

Yeah, I am almost entirely convinced that he was colluded out of baseball. To imagine that some shitty team like the Royals or Rays, who could have used the publicity quite a bit, wouldn’t give him a DH job at league minimum is simply insane. Not even a minor league contract with an ST invite? Come on. In fact, if the Rays had given him their DH job, that might have won them the Series in 2008, as well as helped their record out; the primary DHs they used were Jonny Gomes, Rocco Baldelli, and Cliff Floyd, who combined for -0.3 WAR (though Gomes and his horrible OF defense contributed to that). Anyone who believes that the best hitter in baseball, who was still putting up OPS’s above 1.000, couldn’t get a job with any of the thirty major league teams due to some combination of media disapproval and ???? is probably some sort of bacterium.
I really doubt Bonds would have gone for a minor-with-invite type of contract. I bet he gave his agent specific instructions to scoff loudly at anyone offering him less than a starting role.

I thought it was publicly stated that he’d play for the minimum…or was that just something that was suggested he do?
YOU EAT YOUR DAMN EGGROLL
His agent did say that. However, I believe it was widely considered to be a bunch of hooey that he was just saying to try to prove a point.
I don't know about that, to the groin.

As I recall Borris made that statement in mid-season which is further cause for skepticism.
There’s also this:
“He has nothing to prove there,” Bonds’ agent, Jeff Borris, said Wednesday. “He doesn’t need to go to an independent team and hit two home runs a night hoping to get attention to prove that he still has the skills that would warrant him playing at the major league level. His performance in 2007 demonstrates that he’s capable of playing at the major league level for the 2008 season.”
That’s the kind of statement that makes me think Bonds would have had no interest in a MLWSTI deal.

I dunno; if he wanted to play that badly, then maybe he would have gone for it. Though I do think that’s a pretty disrespectful offer to the reigning home run champ. I think that if he was offered a league-minimum job at the end of the 2007 offseason he would have taken it when he realized he didn’t have any other options. He made a point of saying he wasn’t retired at one of the Giants games.
There is uncertainty about this?
I have always known that BB was colluded out of baseball. It is obvious. There is no reason why someone wouldn’t have wanted him, and there is no real reason for why we let him go. It sucks, and I feel bad for him because he was within a short distance from some other milestones, but he was made the scapegoat for the entire MLBs’ problems, and is therefore exiled from play because of it.
Will Clark! I liked the article.
You might want to call the graph “Final Season”, though. Until I went over to BCB I was trying to figure out how Bonds OPS+’d 170 in 2009.

Yes, There Was Zero Chance Of A Trial In 2008.
Being charged is not the same as being found guilty.

and yet being under indictment might make a prospective employer leery.
Utter frustration and futility.

Still, it’s a pretty good excuse…

I think if he went to trial there’s a good chance the team that signed him could have voided his contract. Or they could include a clause that lets them void it in the event the trial happened and he was therefore unable to play. There are ways around that, but no one was willing to explore them because they were told not to sign him.
You need to update your depth chart.

Ahem,
The depth chart will be updated periodically to reflect any roster changes that have taken place.

I want to see Bonds and Clark in the same lineup again.
I know you nerds know NOTHING about the real game of baseball, or any other athletic endeavor requiring teamwork under physical stress.

I always loved this card.

1993 season
Bonds: .336/.458/.677 (204 OPS+)
Clark: .283/.367/.432 (117 OPS+)
Williams: .294/.325/.561 (136 OPS+)
Williams was also +10 runs with the glove in ’93. Bonds was +9 runs. Clark was slightly below average at -6.8 runs. The ’93 team still bums me out, what a great team to not make the postseason.

That Giants team was one of the reasons baseball realigned the divisions. Had the 1994 format been used in 1993, the Giants win the West by 22 games over LA.
"meh"
My favorite trio
since I wasn’t around to appreciate Clark and Williams…
2000
Bonds .306 .440 .688 (188 OPS+)
Kent .334 .424 .596 (162 OPS+)
Burks .344 .419 .606 (163 OPS+)
I try not to break the rules, but merely to test their elasticity.
This is a dangerous path to start heading down
Pretty soon we’re going to be talking about Saloman Torres (Dave Burba), The Rockies, Bobby Jones, Rally Monkeys, Willy McCovey line drives, etc. etc. etc.

Wait, that just gave me a great, completely original idea. Let’s sign Bonds!

IMO. Was obviously collusion
I eagerly await the day that Bonds sues the greedy MLB ownership and management that threw him under the bus for their sins.
