Fantasy League, or Baseball Pokemon

So, uh, I've never played fantasy baseball before. But I thought I might like to try this year. Anybody here planning on starting a league with room for a beginner that y'all can easily beat?

And to complete the 75 word minimum, I'd like to offer this:

If I were playing third base and my mother were rounding third with the run that was going to beat us, I'd trip her. Oh, I'd pick her up and brush her off and say, "Sorry, Mom," but nobody beats me. -Leo Durocher

Last year, we had two leagues. I’ve started a league the last two years, and I’ll probably do one again this year. And I’m sure there’ll be enough space for you if you if you keep paying attention before the season starts!

It kind of requires as much or as little attention as you want to give it. If you’re anal like me, you can micromanage, but you don’t need to.

Basically there’s a drat, and then you can do trades if you want, right? Anything else you have to do?

I was promised lasagna.

by Cookyman on Feb 6, 2010 1:21 PM PST up reply actions

Well, you can also pick up “free agents” – that is, players nobody else has picked up yet. Also, you want to keep an eye on your lineup – if someone is injured or getting benched (or just sucks), you want to take them out of your lineup and replace them with someone who is playing and/or is better.

Oh, and aside from that you usually have more pitchers than you have space on the active roster – you have a limited number of “lineup” spots, and then you have other players on your bench, where they’re on your team, but their stats don’t count towards your total – so you want to check in every few days at least to set pitching spots.

I am a veteran fantasy player

And I would love to be in a league with MCC folks, especially this newbie here.

Besides, you are all massive homers and will probably take all the Giants, while I draft all the good fantasy players.

If there's one impression I've gotten from this site...

… it’s that the McCoven are all massive homers who think the Giants players and front office can do no wrong…

no, our true homerness comes out in fantasy baseball. None of us want to take Dodgers and Tim Lincecum goes #1 overall.

Lincecum didn't go #1 overall in Dingerz.exe last year!

I know this because he was my first pick, and I didn’t go first. I think I went like fifth or sixth.

Turned out pretty well for me, too!

The only other Giants I had for extended periods of time, though, were Matt Cain….and Fred Lewis.

one year, though, pre-MCC

I had Eric Gagne, Mariano Rivera, and John Smoltz when they were the closers for the Dodgers, Yankees, and Braves. It was really annoying, because I benefitted from my three least favorite teams winning.

I am experienced with both Yahoo and ESPN.com fantasy leagues. I’d be highly interested in joining such a league.

We’ve used Yahoo in the past. The league I’ve run the past two years (The Kevin Frandsen Memorial League in 2008 and Dingerz.exe in 2009) was rotisserie-style with all MLB players and 5×5 stats, except with OPS instead of batting average.

since this is MCC

I’d half expect you nerds to use UZR and WAR as official stats.

If it is Yahoo, I’m definitely in assuming there’s a spot for me.

Yeah I’d like to join too. The first time I played was last year and I made the playoffs (would have gone farther too except Yahoo sucks at actually updating stats and I got unlucky with my bench guys having great days).

If money ISNT involved, can we make league have other incentives like...

Whoever is the biggest loser each week has to change their McC Signature to whatever the winner picks for the next week?

If someone gets shutout in any week, he must post “I love Brian Sabean” as the subject line for every comment he makes for a month

etc etc

I'm interested.

I joined some lame public league last year, people wouldn’t trade, a typical trade transaction would be:

I offer:

Zach Grienke and Youk for Tex and Utley

Counter Offer:

Greinke/Youk/Braun for Utley.

I lost interest really quickly.

My career path, have you seen it?

by say hey nation on Feb 8, 2010 11:09 AM PST reply actions

I got Curtis Granderson for Derek Lowe last year. And I almost traded Geovany Soto for Joe Mauer right before Mauer came back; the guy accepted it, but the league vetoed.

I have never done fantasy baseball before. But I would like to give it a try. Then I can be like the rest of you this season and go “Well he killed the Giants but at least _______ helped my fantasy numbers!”

Then I can be told to shut up like everyone else.

I don’t know squat about organizing this stuff, but it seems like there’s a bit of interest. Is there a way to set up …what am I trying to ask here? … one league with 2 or 3 eight team divisions? That way everyone could play together [so to speak] but the numbers wouldn’t be overwhelming. Top 2 from each division makes the “playoffs” ?

by Merope on Feb 8, 2010 1:31 PM PST reply actions

I don’t think it can work that way. But we can just have a few different leagues – it worked fine last year.

Experienced skips foreplay.

by ResDog on Feb 9, 2010 6:04 AM PST up reply actions

We don’t, people do. Those who feel they are better than most at fantasy baseball go Experienced, those who are new/terrible go Noob, and those who are in the middle/unsure probably go Intermediate. Leave it up to the discretion of the players.
