Around SBN: Ryder Hesjedal Wins Giro d'Italia

As I mentioned elsewhere, my wife took in an FSU ballgame - a 14-4 drubbing of the sadly overmatched Hofstra Pride. But it was fun all the same, and if you follow the link, you can find some awesome pictures - including a picture of Buster Posey* and my son!

about the game, by the way - copying what I wrote elsewhere...
We went to our first FSU game today. It was against Hofstra, which is a comical overmatch, like the Yankees playing a lineup entirely composed of Emmanuel Burriss. For comparison’s sake: Hofstra has had one player drafted since 1995 – he spent two years in the NYPL, earning a line of .177 / .242 / .274. FSU, on the other hand, is one of the top ten teams in the country, has two players on BA’s preseason All-American list, and has had 3-8 players drafted every year for the past decade.

The final score was 14-4 FSU. That was Hofstra’s best game of the series – they lost the first two 13-1 and 13-0.

But still, it was baseball! In February. Which I watched while wearing a t-shirt. Florida is weird.

FSU’s biggest prospect is Tyler Holt, their starting center fielder/leadoff hitter. He’s a junior and a second team All-American, and will be available in this year’s draft. He didn’t get any hits, but he impressed me with his approach. He drew two walks and showed good plate discipline and pitch judgement – I didn’t see him swing at one pitch out of the zone in all four at bats. The other two plate appearances were first-pitch outs, but they were both hard-hit line drives, so it’s not like he was hacking at first-pitch slop.

The other name to know is Mike McGee, their left fielder/cleanup hitter and a third team All-American. Also a junior. He went 1-4 with a walk – one of his outs was a ball hit to the warning track in dead center field. He also looked like a guy who was able to take a pitch.
One of FSU’s backup outfielders is named Taiwan Easterling. I don’t care if he’s a prospect or not – I want the Giants to draft the man for his name alone.

the player formerly known as Formosa Easterling.

On formal occasions he’s known as Chinese Taipei Easterling.

The repetition is awesome. I think I’ll just start copying other people’s posts verbatim.

His childhood freinds still know him as Republic of China Easterling.

I was promised lasagna.

He plays football for FSU too

I chuckled when I heard his name announced but then there’s this guy…

It’s a shame people can’t live their lifestyle without being labeled.

Win the inning.

FSU always seems to have a player or two who have interesting last names.

...and as a side-note

FSU has produced several Giants:

Buster Posey
Chris Brock
Deion Sanders
Jim Weaver (in the ultra-obscure barely-Giants category)
Terry Kennedy

So do we keep Tyler Holt on the “players to consider to draft at 24 list” or do we scratch him off?

by wilriv21 on Mar 1, 2010 3:03 AM PST reply actions

Hard to say from one game, especially against a low level of competition. Hofstra didn’t hit many balls to the outfield, for example, so I can’t really tell you anything about his defense.

Next weekend, Virginia, who Baseball America ranks #1 in the country, will be in town – I’m hoping to go to one of those games, so that may give me a better idea of Holt.

My wish list hasn’t changed: Colon, LaVon Washington, Josh Sale. I’m saying my piece and counting to three!

My Bucardo is better than yours.

A hot August weekday, before a small crowd, when the only thing at stake is the tissue-thin difference between a thing done well and a thing done ill. Insofar as the clutch hitter is not a sportswriter's myth, it is a vulgarity, like a writer who writes only for money.

Colon? Why no Bryce Harper?

Even if Christian Colon has a Grant Green type fall he probably drops no further than mid first round. Now if we trade Fred Lewis plus a third round draft pick maybe just maybe Mr John Barr could trade up to grab Colon.

Any pitchers you like?

by wilriv21 on Mar 1, 2010 8:46 AM PST up reply actions

No doubt, but I’m just gonna sit here wishing nonetheless. I think there’s a chance that one of Washington or Sale could fall to us, though.

No pitchers — I believe in the organization’s ability to find pitchers lower in the draft or elsewhere. I can’t say the same thing about bats, and the organization could really use the boost of another impact bat coming thru the lower reaches.

+1 on Colon

Last year I wanted the Giants to draft Grant Green and Colon reminds me a lot of Green

I know it’s a wish list, but Colon and Sale would have to have pretty bad years to fall to 24.

Cannot see Colon going any later than 18 (Angels). The early mock drafts I have seen have Josh Sale as currently going somewhere between mid to late first round so he could possibly be available.

by wilriv21 on Mar 2, 2010 7:30 AM PST up reply actions

I know nothing about these guys whatsoever, but they’ve got Washington at 20 and Sale at 27 with Colon at 11. Here’s one with Sale also at 27 but Washington all the way up at 9 and Colon at 8 (which seems reasonable to me). And just for the heck of it, another (with scouting reports!) that puts Sale at 26 and Washington off the 1st round entirely.

Eh, given how much movement there is on draft boards between now and June that’s not exactly putting hope for any of these guys beyond the pale, especially as it can’t take into account 1) extravagant bonus demands; 2) subpar seasons; or 3) injuries (of the not necessarily serious long-term variety). I’ll just sit here keeping my hopes until some shiny object floats by and distracts and I forget what it was I was hoping for.

I don't think he's a projected 1st rd pick

I think he’s a 2-3 round guy

I would probably be more inclined towards Holt if this is the case

Like I said, I liked his approach, and he was hitting nice line drives, but I wouldn’t be thrilled picking someone with so little power in the first round. Of course, with the 24th pick, beggars can’t always be choosers.
