I hope he isn’t meaning that he should be given the number 1 spot, and the end makes it seem like he isn’t. If this encourages him to at least get closer to Cain than spotty Sanchez(who has numerous excuses) performance, I am all for him thinking like it. He is locked in for a fortune, so the only thing he has to play for now is a nicer view when people look back on his career.
Maybe it’s a slightly dirty sanchez.

The title should really be "Zito wants to be good again"
Nowhere does he seriously make the argument that he should starting on opening day.

That nowhere in or near that statement does it say Zito was chuckling, smiling, or pulling a clown face makes me think that
1. He was indeed serious
and
2. He’s going off the deep end of reality if he thinks that’s happening anytime soon…unless he’s planning on spending some of his hard – earned money on “disappearing” the better pitchers in the rotation.

I can understand that it would feel embarrassing to be making money like that and not be put in the top spot. As others have said, Zito seems to be saying that he wants to earn the top spot again (which is what he was originally paid for) rather than saying that he deserves it. But I doubt he’d overtake the young guns at this point, and I imagine he honestly doubts that too.
Although I’m not going to use too much sympathy on a guy getting a paycheck like his, I could see how he could feel bad about the situation, more so than most other pitchers in the second or third spot.
