Predict the 2011 Top Ten Prospects
It's really a guessing game, but just for shits and giggles, let's try predicting who'll be on next year's top ten organizational prospects list. There are a number of things to take into account: who will no longer be eligible? If we're remotely close to contention, who will Sabean trade for a shitty veteran? Who will have a breakout season, and who will fall off the map?
Predicting draft pick's is just silly at this point, so you can use (first round pick), etc., as a placeholder. I suppose you can also use (international signing) as a placeholder, too.
If we get a sufficient number of 'll revisit this post in a year's time, and (imaginary) awards will be given to the most accurate prediction, the least accurate prediction, and the best out-of-left-field pick. So be bold!

Depends on the first round pick.
Also, looks like you are going with a pitcher as numero uno. Wonder if Neal will be on the giants by that time.
My guess is Neal comes up in September and hits well. He’ll be starting in the outfield in 2011 unless Bowker gets the chance to have a great year somehow.

I’m planning on Thomas overplaying his rookie status in the majors. I think Noonan will have a breakout year and RafRod will hold his own at Augusta (he’s going to Augusta, right?)

Cause I think we should take advantage of his prospect status and trade him for some good pitching. We’ll need it in october.
I’m serious about mine. I don’t think Posey gets 113 at-bats in the majors this year. Not with Molina’s contract incentives.

True, but rookie status can be lost by just being on the 25 man roster for so long. And if he can beat that Eli guy (won’t be easy!) for the backup job he wont be rookie next year.

I’m guessing Molina has enough physical decline this year that he’s forced onto the DL at some point. Actually I left Neal off my list because I have the same concerns about the DeRosa/Sanchez combination, with a side helping of not believing Nate can hold his starting position all year, to guess that Neal might get a “trying to catch lightning in the bottle call up” later in the summer.

3. Joseph (Starts slow , finishes well and displays LTP)

3. Crawford – finishes in AAA, ready to take over shortstop for Giants in ‘11
4. Noonan – improves plate discipline, has steady season in AA
5. Joseph – hits for power but in need of position
6. RafRod – hits over .300 as 18 year old in Salem
7. Kieschnick – 25 bombs, 90 rbis in AA and lots of k’s
8. Graham – regains command, has breakout year in Augusta
9. Peguero – continues to improve, reaches AA (if not traded at deadline)
10. Stoffel – does a Runzler and blows through system to reach bullpen by Sept.

I totally agree
I think our entire developmental process will take off dramatically if BCrawford can take over SS next year, after having successfully established himself in AAA this year. Conversely, his lack of success this year would really put the organization in a bind – and likely lead to another hasty FA signing next winter.
Clearly, Neal and Posey offer a good deal of hope for the near future, but Brandon’s 2010 may well decide the fate of the rather-iffy 2011/2012 era. But 2013 and beyond, I think things look very promising.

Well, to be honest, I’m more focused on improving our offense than I am on maintaining our pitching. And, in the real world, I realize you have to do both. I’d like to think that the Giants Pitching Magic continues to unearth useful arms during this decade, allowing me to daydream about potential batting lineups.
In short, I think we will be able to count on…
1. Posey
2. Neal
3. Noonan (or at least Downs)
4. Crawford (or at least Adrianza)
5. Hector Sanchez
6. Peguero
…in the coming years, and hopefully either Bowker or Kieschnick turns into something useful, at minimum. So I see good things ahead.

I guess, as you know I believe in the value of impact players. I think if you take Lincecum away our pitching staff takes a huge step backwards and we’re not too likely to come up with another of him once he’s gone (certainly he’s the best Giants pitcher since Marichal, so by that science we won’t see a replacement for him until after 2050). If the pitching becomes just “useful” then you’re having to come up with a team based on an impact offense. Hopefully Posey, Panda and Neal give us a head start on that, but I wouldn’t want to bet on a Giants club whose calling card is a fearsome offense as long as the current regime’s around. And, I guess, my feeling ultimately is that Posey’s the only member of that group I’m willing to count on. Neal I believe in. Peguero I have hopes for, and the descending scale continues to decline from there on down.
In short, the next 3 years are crucial for our development. Some of these bats need to get up here and start thundering before the bright lights of New York sing their clarion call to Timmy and/or his agent (not to mention Matt and/or his agent).

by baseballjunkie on Feb 26, 2010 2:57 PM PST up reply actions
Sabol in the first round then Brown in the second round. Unless of course Mr Dick Tidrow falls in love with a pitcher.
That certainly could happen
This draft, by early indications, seems pretty strong for pitching. But I’d really like to see the Giants go for some bats. Like you, I’d like to see the Giants go for a CF early, hence my pick of Tyler Holt from FSU. I have a feeling he will rise up the boards in the months leading up to the draft. I don’t think he will be there when the Giants pick in the second round (neither do I think Brown will be available either, actually) so I’d be ok if they sprung for him in the first. But the reality is that we probably end up with a pitcher, but given the Giants track record with arms that wouldn’t be a bad thing.
by baseballjunkie on Feb 26, 2010 4:06 PM PST up reply actions
I'm going to see Holt play tomorrow!
We’re going to our first FSU game. It’s against Hofstra – there hasn’t been a Major Leaguer from Hofstra since the 80s, and there currently aren’t any Hofstra players in the minor leagues – only one has been drafted since 1995. So it’s not such a high level of competition. But I’ll definitely keep an eye on Holt and Mike McGee, their other All-American who’s also a junior this year.

If you think about it, Neal won’t be #1 next year. If he hits well enough to justify a #1rating, there’s no way this team will be going along well enough that he won’t get called up to replace some faltering part of the offense. I think you have to predict him to be 3 or lower, or to lose his eligibility.

I don’t see how you justify calling up Neal from AA. And I don’t foresee him dominating in Richmond the way Crawford did in San Jose last year, necessitating Thomas getting an early promotion to Fresno (and thence on to SF). Not saying it COULDN’T happen, I just think it’s highly unlikely that all the necessary intermediate moves happen that would pave the way for this.

Are you talking about the call up from AA specific to Neal, Lyle, because the Giants certainly have called players straight up from the EL in the past few years: Panda and Rohlinger in 2008, and Ishikawa in 2006 springing immediately to mind.

Ishikawa was because of a sudden injury, as I recall, and it was a weird decision anyway. But yes, you’re right.
I believe both Sergio Romo and Osiris Matos were originally called up straight from AA, too.

No, Ishikawa was a classic Sabean “lightning in a bottle” attempt to get lucky at 1B after they’d decided to bench Niekro but before they’d made the Hillenbrand trade. Strangely Ishi performed better in his brief time than either of the other two.

No, I’m just saying that when you multiply the 65% chance that Neal dominates AA by the 50% chance he dominates AAA (all in this year), you get a fairly low percentage (32.5% if I’m doing it right) of likelihood that Neal is justifiably in SF in September. As you’ve pointed out, those wacky SF promotions are always a possibility. But, in a sane world, the odds of Neal being on the Giants this year are low.
Believe me, if he deserved to be up in September, I’d be THRILLED beyond belief – I’m a Neal fan already, and have him penciled in for LF for 2012 already. A year early would be fine by me. I just don’t see it happening.

A hot August weekday, before a small crowd, when the only thing at stake is the tissue-thin difference between a thing done well and a thing done ill. Insofar as the clutch hitter is not a sportswriter's myth, it is a vulgarity, like a writer who writes only for money.
1. Wheeler (dominates the Sally in a Bumgarner type fashion but shows a filthy breaking ball)
2. Neal (doesn’t quite replitcate his 09 numbers but plays very well and removes any doubts about his defense.
3. Joseph (hit for power and average but looks lost behind the plate. Giants are still going to try and let him figure things out, but this tempers his value going into 2011)
4. R. Rodriguez (Still competent and well rounded play, especially for his age. A couple more doubles, but still 0 HRs in an additional 150 ABs at S-K.)
5. Roger Kieshnick (further improves plate discipline from second half of ‘09. Puts up a .280/.360/.540 line.
6 Nick Noonan (Really has a strong year. Hits .295/.370/.470 in AA. Still needs work against lefties)
7. Chevez Clarke (Board meltdown when he’s drafted. Though to be Wendell part 2. Clarke surprises with a refined bat, doubles pop and elite speed in his short time at S-K)
8. Peguero (K/BB ratio is awful once again. Every other skill is on display including emerging HR power)
9. Bucardo (continues to put up great numbers. His fastball velocity surprises really elevating his status.
10. Surkamp (K’s 11/9 mostly in AA. Fastball is beginning to sit around 90 to go with plus curve and change.)
Just missed: Ford, Stoffel, Concepcion, Graham, Leonardo Fuentes

forgot Crawford. I’d throw him in at 7. K’s still concern me.

I just jumped off my stairs when I read your #7 rank. I need a splint, stat!

Q: Did you ever make an offer for Vladimir Guerrero?
Sabean: In a word: No. If we had signed Guerrero or [Gary] Sheffield, we would have been without [Long list of replacement level vets]—obviously not being able to field a competitive team, especially from an experience standpoint, given our level of spending.
Bold move!

This has one foot in jest the other in deeply depressed reality.

OK, not much new to add
1 Neal, LF and 1B. Should try him in RF too.
2 Bumgarner getting more development time to work on offspeed and stamina
3 first round pick, probably a power RHP
4 Z Wheeler
5 Francisco Peguero CF
6 Edward Concepcion P
7 Tommy Joseph, C or 1B
8 Matt Graham P
9 Brandon Crawford, SS talented enough to hit in AAA, anyway
10 J Stoffel, closer
sleepers/ lurkers: Surkamp, Tanner, RafRod, Casilla, Noonan, Kieshnick
too much ML time to be prospects: Pucetas, Johnson, Downs
cheering for Adam Witter, who will hit bigleague dingers some day.
Still yelling "Go, Antoan"
Wow, I believe you’ve got not one, but two, players who are no longer in the organization in your sig — that might be the all time record!
Interesting that you think next year’s 1st round pick (at #24) will be higher rated than last year’s 1st round pick (at #6). Is that an indication that you think Wheeler will struggle significantly this year?

MadBum and Posey
1. Posey
2. MadBum
3. Neal
4. Wheeler
5. First Rounder Pitcher
6. Tommy Joseph
7. RafRod
8. Noonan
9. Matt Graham (top ten needs moar pitchers)
10. Crawford (Gets my vote for close to the majors top ten filler)
The shine will come of E-Hire when more eyes are on him to expose little flaws. Maybe Sosa should have been my dark horse choice for somewhere in the top ten pitching prospect.
But worst of all, I can see Posey and Madbum still having rookie elligibility next year. Which might not be a bad thing. Maybe more likely they will both get enough time in the majors to ruin any chance at RoY consideration, qualify as Super Twos, but not contriubute in a fmeaningful way to the team – that is as back up catcher for Posey and long relief or bullpen arm for MadBum.
