Around SBN: Ryder Hesjedal Wins Giro d'Italia

"(My) list of transgressions includes bringing in players who have already proven they are capable of succeeding in ny ( nick Johnson and Javier vasquez), destroying the farm system that was finally being built back up to aquire older players who have had mediocre careers (granderson) and today the signing of winn in order to save some money instead of bringing back one of the most productive players as well as a great teammate, Johnny Damon was the final straw ...
"This offseason has not instilled this same confidence, so I regretfully must inform you that I am cancelling my ticket plan. I am no longer a ticket package holder for the Yankees, but I remain what I will always be, I lifelong Yankee fan."

Well I hate to defend this, but clearly he means “incapable” since Javier Vazquez and Nick Johnson did not play well in NY.

And at the intersection of the “meaning” and the “writing” we find the hilarity!

My Bucardo is better than yours.

A hot August weekday, before a small crowd, when the only thing at stake is the tissue-thin difference between a thing done well and a thing done ill. Insofar as the clutch hitter is not a sportswriter's myth, it is a vulgarity, like a writer who writes only for money.

Nick Johnson played perfectly well as a Yankee

Nick Johnson as a Yankee: .256 / .376 / .423, 113 OPS+.

His last year with the Yankees he had a 138 OPS+! He only played 96 games, but even so he was worth 2.5 WAR.

Adopted Giant: the probably soon to be ditched but still awesome Fred Lewis

by jcb9 on Feb 3, 2010 6:06 AM PST up reply actions

Eh

His first full year (2002) he was mediocre at best — .243/.347/.402 is not good for a 1B. His last year, 2003, he was very good but injured. I mean, his time in NY wasn’t disastrous or anything, but nor was it a success. They have high standards there; while the Giants would be happy to get 3.6 WAR out of a 1B over two seasons, the Yankees would see that as an area that needs improvement.

by taliesin on Feb 3, 2010 7:28 AM PST up reply actions

Yankess fans are retarded

It’s amazing that two of the best franchises, NY and BOS, have some of the dumbest fans. You would think watching good teams would help you identify what makes players and teams good, but apparently not.

Yeah, when your first four hitters are Jeter-Johnson-Teixeira-Rodriguez you can probably live with Randy Winn batting 8th.

Who would be batting ninth? Georgy?

by srpwrd on Feb 2, 2010 1:44 PM PST via mobile up reply actions

I was thinking it would probably be Posada or Cano, going by the theory that an AL team would be best off having its worst hitter bat 8th rather than 9th.

The Yankees improved the most this offseason, and they were the one team that didn’t need to.

I’ve said in the past that Granderson will never be a true superstar until he hits lefties, but if he’s mediocre, I can’t think of a word to describe the Giants lineup. I’d take that mediocre every day of the week and throw a Leap Year Day in as well.

Eliminate that pesky Dominatrix in one easy step. Step 1: Tell her you're a Cubs fan!

by TMOX on Feb 2, 2010 2:37 PM PST reply actions

I would say he is neither mediocre or a superstar, just a good ballplayer who seemed to sacrifice his average to hit for more power last year. And he strikes out a lot. I don’t think he is a real difference maker in that lineup, at this point in time or into the future, so the PO’d fan has a point about dealing away prospects. There is something to be said about “home grown” talent, as opposed to revolving door of free agents and trade acquisitions. There may come a time when the Yankees collapse around the core of aging and expensive players, at the expense of developing their own talent, but probably not in 2010.

by RUSirius on Feb 2, 2010 3:47 PM PST up reply actions

Granderson will never be a true superstar until he hits lefties

If you have a guy that hits at a certain level overall, he’s actually MORE valuable the greater his platoon split. The option to platoon him only increases his value as your team gets his great production + better production from his platoon partner.

I’m sure the Yankees front office is really scared that he canceled his season tickets. It’s not like they have a waiting list a mile long and use the excess pages from said list as toiletpaper.

Well I actually do find it incredible that the Yankees picked up a washed-up veteran that the Giants really didn’t want anymore. I mean, has that ever happened before, that Sabean let an over-30 player go and someone else picked him up? Generally the Giants keep a veteran until he’s so embarrassed he just retires or there’s just no choice but to DFA him.
