Early worry: other teams in the NL West
This is largely prompted by the fact that the Arizona Diamondbacks are freaking me out. If healthy, they have a great potential top of the rotation and a solid young group of position players all over the field. Last year they struggled with injuries, inconsistency, and managerial / ownership changes. But if they put it all together they match up well against our Giants.
The Rockies still have a great lineup. Their pitchers are young and show their age, but if any of those guys prove themselves to be consistently dominant we've got some concerns...
The Dodgers still have a crazy good lineup for the NL West. Their bullpen is also really good. The best thing for us is that their rotation is uneven. Let's dwell on the fact that they suck.
The Padres actually have some decent younger hitters, and Adrian Gonzalez. Mostly, though, they are an unknown commodity.
What do you see about those teams that concerns you or gives you hope? How do the Giants stack up against these divisional opponents?

The NL West is wide open
Can make a case for every team. Can make a case against every team. Should be lots of fun this summer.
+1
You could project the teams in the NL West to finish in any order you see fit and it still would be feasible.

Pretty much this. It’s an easy scenario to envision every team but the Padres making a run at the division. The NL West should be one of the most competitive divisions this year.
Bochy: What’s this fancy stat here?
IT Guy: That’s how often they get on base. I do not know why you keep asking me, I am here to fix your server.

“Competitive” is a polite way of saying it.
I think of it more as putting a bunch of trash in a toilet, flushing it, and seeing what doesn’t go down.
Did the NL West somehow get worse?
Because this division had the best overall record in the NL, and the best (and third best) individual team records (also, the least bad worst team).

This is what confuses me. The West didn’t get much better, but when your third-place team goes 88-74 you’re approaching AL East levels of winning. I don’t know why all these people say the West is horrible; I think it’s going to be super-competitive because every team is great , not because they’re all terrible. The Rockies, D’Backs, and Giants have great rotations, the Giants and Dodgers have great bullpens, the Rockies, Dodgers, and D’Backs have good/great hitting.
I don’t think the Padres will make the playoffs, but I think people underestimate the talent on that team.
FU, FO
They’ve got some nice young talent in Latos, Blanks, Headley. I also kinda like Aaron Cunningham, whom they picked up from the A’s.

In a few years Blanks is gonna be amazing
He scares me, as a Giants fan

The Padres enjoy their role as late season spoilers far too much to want to win the division.
The west is wild this year. No one’s great, and if the giant and rockies get off to better starts than last year, the Dodgers won’t puch the crap out of everyone early and cruise for the rest of the season.
Year’s gonna be good.
A large part of that Dodger start in early 2009 was the Rockies going something like 1-11 vs. The Bums in their first 3 to 4 series. The road to the division title really as to go through Denver for 2010 and if they steady up for the entire season even the Bums may not be able to take the title out of Denver.
Threat level that the 2010 Pads finish with more wins than the 2010 Giants is currently at - 25%
SCIENCE!
GIANTS ~ 82-80
DIAMONDBACKS ~ 81-81
ROCKIES ~ 81-81
PADRES ~ 81-81
DODGERS ~ 40-122
These pretzels are making me thirsty
You are blinded by science
The Giants Way™"If anybody deserves credit for this year’s turnaround it’s these two people, Brian and Bruce," Neukom said. "The encouraging thing is we think we’re back to playing baseball the way it ought to be played."
No, I think that looks accurate.

The bad thing is the Giants hitters have to face the Dodgers pitching 18 times. The shittier the pitcher is the worse the Giants will hit him.

THIS
our lineup manages to make the jeff weaver’s and wade leblanc’s of the world look like aces.

Let’s be honest with ourselves. Our lineup makes the aces of the world look like aces, too. Pitching against the Giants lineup? You are an ace, if only for a day….

May I direct you to one or two exceptions?

Yeah, that’s only two, but our guys have an interesting way of breaking through on aces and looking like crap against crap:
there is something to dodger pitchers tossing their best games vs the giants.
This seemed true even when the giants had a good hitting team. Remember way back when!
Nope, sorry.
My memory begins in 1994.

You done been chasm'd.
Although I wish you hadn’t.
I remember Tommy LaFuckstick’s fat face in the camera afterward bellowing about how “NOW the Giants know how heartbreak feels, blahblahblah…”

WORRY WORT
Brian Sabean strongly encourages you to disregard the drudgery of your employment responsibilities and join him in the consumption of spirituous libations.
The thing you are forgetting-
None of the other teams in the West have the versatility or as many options for double switchers and late inning defensive replacements as the Giants have.
and bunting
we’re working on the bunting!
Giants pitching coach Dave Righetti. "I treat Timmy differently from most pitchers: I leave him alone."
Bengie Molina: "I don't understand why they didn't want to commit to another year, with my numbers and my experience and things like that." Brain Sabean: "He's certainly welcomed back with open arms".
Mychael Urban: Wow. Probably Dye at this point. Good outfielder, could adapt to RF at AT&T, good RBI guy.

I fear the Rockies and the Diamondbacks most, but my lack of fear of the Dodgers is probably because I hate them so, so much.

The Diamondbacks would scare me too. Except...
Living, as I do, in Phoenix, I am firmly convinced by by observations that the D-Backs manager is a complete dunce.
Quit making the theiving Wall Street Fat-Cat Bankers even richer.

The Rockies and Dodgers are still there.
I am not sold yet on the D’Backs pitching. The back end of the starting rotation isn’t that good and the bullpen was one of the worst in baseball last year. If Huff and DeRosa have good years, the Giants will be there.
Living, as I do, inPhoenixthe Bay Area, I am firmly convinced by by observations that theD-BacksGiants manager is a complete dunce.
Every manager is a dunce.
Until they win a ring, and then they’re only a genius until opening day.
