Neyer on Posey: Giants dumb, but probably not doing much damage
Nice to see someone else recognize that Giants front office has no secret master plan when it comes to Posey.

First, let me ask you a question: What sort of chances do you give the Giants of winning 85-90 games this season?
Yeah, same here: slim and none.
Here’s another question: Would Buster Posey playing (say) 120 games change that?
Right: quite probably not.
Was the 2009 season really that much of a fluke? I know nobody thought they’d win 88, but is it really so unlikely that largely the same group (with a few changes) could get 85-ish this year? I’m genuinely curious.
I think a lot of people have us pegged around an 83-84 win true talent team, both last year and this year (forecasted)….so 85ish doesn’t seem outlandish at all.

85-87 doesn’t seem out of the realm of possibility to me at all

I agree.
But the idea that they can afford to not replace Bengie with a player that gives the team 2 more wins is really ridiculous. It could very well mean the difference of a playoff berth.

Eh, I see a playoff birth as less likely rather than more likely in whether we have Posey or Bengie back there…

Bengie looks like he’s ready for a birth.
I know you nerds know NOTHING about the real game of baseball, or any other athletic endeavor requiring teamwork under physical stress.

That’s the kind of thinking that leads to April, May and June with players like Bocock and Burriss in the lineup. Interestingly, those games count the same as the ones in September. That’s why it’s baseball, at least until Selig’s committee adds 4 wild card teams to each tournament bracket next year.
Giants pitching coach Dave Righetti. "I treat Timmy differently from most pitchers: I leave him alone."
Bengie Molina: "I don't understand why they didn't want to commit to another year, with my numbers and my experience and things like that." Brain Sabean: "He's certainly welcomed back with open arms".
Mychael Urban: Wow. Probably Dye at this point. Good outfielder, could adapt to RF at AT&T, good RBI guy.

I think they will about a .500 team. One injury away from being pretty bad.

DODGER FAN CALLS GIANTS DUMB
Still and all, why bother? Here's my answer. Many people need desperately to receive this message: I feel and think much as you do, care about many of the things you care about, although most people do not care about them. You are not alone.

Rob Neyer is a Royals fan…?

That’s the hometown team from where he grew up. Who knows which team he is a fan of now. Does he live in NY or Boston or maybe Joysey? Flip a coin, Yanks or Sawx. Based on his ignorance of some of his columns, not a NL team.
He makes a lot of off the cuff remarks without looking to see if they’re right first, sure (especially in his blogs and chats), but overall he does a really good job of not showing any bias for or against teams. Not sure what your problem with him is.

He lives in Seattle. And he writes about Boston and New York because he works for ESPN and those are the two most popular teams. Not too mention they are pretty well run also.

Fine, Seattle. Who knows why he is adulatory to the Yanks and Sawx. Maybe he’s a Mariners homer, but I questioned how invested he is in the Royals.

He’s not, and he’s not. He really doesn’t seem to show any favoritism for anyone, really…

Really? You don’t think he’s invested in the Royals? Have you ever read the Rob and Rany column?

Dude might not talk about the Royals for ESPN much (since, you know, ESPN doesn’t care about the Royals) but he cares a whole lot about them.

btw
That hasn’t been updated in some time because I think they both got too busy, but I doubt that Rob has stopped caring about the Royals a whole lot in the span of a year.

Eh, I guess I’ve just seem him write off the Royals and Dayton Moore enougn that I can’t see it. I’ve also seen him mention a bunch of times how his profession has basically destroyed the fan in him. I know he still takes an interest in the Royals, but I don’t know that he actively roots for them as a fan…

I thought he lives in Portland?
He’s always pushing for an MLB team to go there whenever he links to/talks about expansion.

I think the Giants front office is dumb
I also think this article is pretty dumb.
Didn't mean to sound overly negative
It just seems like he’s telling everyone to calm down, when folks weren’t really all that agitated to begin with.
"The BB's are out. The BB's are being arseholes to me." - Brian Wilson.
I don't think that is overly negative, pointless is a good description of the article
Nobody is freaking out over the Giants wanting to give Posey more time to develop (other than a few Chicken Littles around here) now if they have him opening the season as the backup catcher or utility man then we can commence the freakout.

Gordon Beckham
Do not know which player is better (Beckham or Posey) and the ChiSox are having no problem moving their kid around the diamond.
Beckham is just a better soldier.

Maybe not
But I’d like to make Posey’s sister my Rear Admiral.
