Holiday Link Dump
- RotoGraphs weighs in on the Todd Wellemeyer bombshell.
- If you haven't seen it yet, there's an online injury database at Baseball Injury Tool. Very cool, and long needed.
- The Detroit News uses wall of text; you lose six hit points. But it's always interesting to see the perspective of people who don't live and breath roster-move minutia.
- In case you were wondering, the Giants are 16-to-1 to win the World Series. I think I'll save my money for something that makes more practical sense, like yeti repellent.
- If you don't have a Giants-related link to share, just pick a YouTube link, like this one with a robot than can solve a Rubik's cube in ten seconds.
- Or you can talk about your lunch.
- Or maybe I can tie in the President's Day holiday with a reading thread, as I'm reading Theodore Rex right now. It's bully.
Open link dump because I have to work on a holiday, and you don't.

I haven’t been reading shit. Whilst job searching, I’ve been doing some some freelance stuff – first some copyediting, and now audio transcriptions – and that’s been eating up all the time I would normally have to read. And I still have hundreds of pages left in Bleak House. Bastards.

And I’m really running out of hit points fast here. I knew needed to grind more before trying to take on The Detroit News.
I don't know about that, to the groin.
Also: Still reading Sacred Games by Vikram Chandra. 950 page book is 950 pages.
I like it though. The part I’m in is filled with love stories, and Chandra is kind of squirming through it to get back to the gang / police stuff that he’s much better at, so it’s dragging a little. But in general, while it is a dense and involved 950 pages, it doesn’t feel like I’m killing myself to get through it. Which is a good thing.

And Dickens is quite dense reading as well, if I remember the first 50 pages of Great Expectations at all.

I wonder how I would handle Dickens at this point in my life. Reading (the first 50 pages of) GE in high school was basically enough to put me off of him completely until now. But my sensibilities have changed pretty dramatically since then.

Giants pitching coach Dave Righetti. "I treat Timmy differently from most pitchers: I leave him alone."
Bengie Molina: "I don't understand why they didn't want to commit to another year, with my numbers and my experience and things like that." Brain Sabean: "He's certainly welcomed back with open arms".
Mychael Urban: Wow. Probably Dye at this point. Good outfielder, could adapt to RF at AT&T, good RBI guy.

In my experience Great Expectations goes completely over younger folks’ heads (use “younger” to mean high school and below). The humor, especially, and the pathos of certain characters is totally lost on people who want immediate impact in their stories.
Most classics seem to improve with the reader’s age. In part I think it has a great deal to do with what you expect out of your reading at different ages.
I'm as tall as Mel - why can't I hit 500 home runs?
I enjoyed it when I first read it in fourth grade. I got more out of it inc college, though.

I read Dickens in college – a time in my life when I actually enjoyed a Jane Austen novel – and hated it. Dude was paid by the word, yo.
In the end, America will be remembered for three things: the Bill of Rights, jazz, and baseball.
I have to say – I actually think any comparison of Austen to Dickens is seriously lopsided. Austen is far superior with regards to her development of characters, plot, and atmosphere. The only thing I think Dickens might have on her is humor, and even then Austen is very humorous when she wants to be.
But I don’t think it has much to do with word count.
I'm as tall as Mel - why can't I hit 500 home runs?
I only meant to point out another writer that many people are bored by, a group that used to include myself. I don’t think it has much to do with word count for Dickens, but it doesn’t help that he is as un-parsimonious a writer as I can think of.
In the end, America will be remembered for three things: the Bill of Rights, jazz, and baseball.

I was eight years old and running with a dime in my hand
Into the bus stop to pick up a paper for my old man
Id sit on his lap in that big old buick and steer as we drove through town
Hed tousle my hair and say son take a good look around
This is your hometown, this is your hometown
This is your hometown, this is your hometown
In `65 tension was running high at my high school
There was a lot of fights between the black and white
There was nothing you could do
Two cars at a light on a saturday night in the back seat there was a gun
Words were passed in a shotgun blast
Troubled times had come to my hometown
My hometown, my hometown, my hometown
Now main streets whitewashed windows and vacant stores
Seems like there aint nobody wants to come down here no more
They’re closing down the textile mill across the railroad tracks
Foreman says these jobs are going boys and they aint coming back to
Your hometown, your hometown, your hometown, your hometown
Last night me and kate we laid in bed talking about getting out
Packing up our bags maybe heading south
Im thirty-five we got a boy of our own now
Last night I sat him up behind the wheel and said son take a good
Look around
This is your hometown

Well, I had a buddy back in ‘81,
and we made ourselves a pact.
We were headin’ for the new pipelines,
we were never comin’ back.
well we worked 80 hours making time and a half,
but La Grange was too damn hot.
we drove back home at the end of that week
and we spent it all on pot.
I’ll see you in houston, if i ever get out that way,
i’ll see you in dallas, but I won’t have long to stay,
If your ever out west soon, and you’re feeling like slowing down,
I’ll see you around, around my hometown.
Well, I played ball every single fall,
I could run just like the wind.
Went to college like they asked me too
But they didn’t ask my friends.
Don’t think I seen a single classroom,
But I drank a lot of beer.
My buddies still love to listen to me when I talk about that year.
Now I got myself a little band, and we’re pretty good I guess
But I never learned how to wear my hair, and I never learned how to dress.
So i’m leaving for the last time honey, I’m never more to roam.
Gonna pack my bags a little heavy this time gonna head my ass back home.
So I’ll see you in Nashville, if I ever get out that way.
I’ll see you in Austin, but I won’t have long to stay,
If you’re ever out west soon, and you’re feeling like slowing down.
I’ll see you around, around my hometown.

Had one problem. Got to the airport 3 hours in advance, security line was into the baggage claim, weaved back and exited the terminal door and was another 300 or so yards. Thankfully they called my flight number and lead us to a short cut after 2 1/2 hours!

For real? I guess I have been delayed there a lot.
The worst airport I’ve ever been in was Amsterdam. My flight was delayed there for like an hour and it’s that European style thing where they tell you what your gate like 10 min before the boarding time starts so it wasn’t so much that it said it was delayed as it just didn’t say anything AT ALL so I had no clue what was going on.

well, one time...
I had a flight very early in the morning. They said to get to the airport 2 hours ahead of time. I did – and the line went all through the lobby. And there was NOBODY WORKING AT THE DESKS. They didn’t have anyone working there until like 45 minutes later. I had to be skipped ahead in the security line to make my flight.
This was one month after September 11, so obviously they didn’t have everything figured out yet, but still, geez. Pretty moronic.

Are we making hated airport lists now? Fun!
My three worst airports:
1. O’Hare. Fucking awful. Worst on-time record in the country. Over-crowded. Huge and hard to traverse.
2. Minneapolis. Who decides to have their two hubs Minneapolis and Detroit? Yeah, neither of those cities gets any snow in the winter. Minny isn’t that bad, but there snow removal and de-icing is woeful and I’ve been stranded there over-night multiple times.
3. Logan. Overcrowded. Confusing as shit. No amenities once you get through security. Southwest finally flies there, now, so at least it has that going for it.
In the end, America will be remembered for three things: the Bill of Rights, jazz, and baseball.
O’Hare is also a royal pain to get to/from if you’re in Chicago. it’s way the fuck at the end of the Blue Line, which is one of the oldest and slowest parts of the L – which is an old and slow system in general.

There’s a reason they stopped using a perfectly good airport and built a ridiculously large one 40 miles out of the city it serves. They’re still building the bunkers and whatnot, underground construction is going on all over that area.

But that’s because I was delayed on the plane there for four hours because some idiot checked bags and then didn’t get on the flight. And then they had a problem with the navigational system. And then they had to de-ice the plane. Oh! And because once you go through the second security checkpoint for American flights, there’s no food available.

The main reason CDG rubbed me the wrong way was because I stayed in the Sheraton within the airport, and it gets really old really fast. And the RER that connects CDG to the city broke down a lot and was extremely crowded. My dad and I joked that whenever it broke down, it was the workers going on strike.

It bothers me that they’re tape-delaying events when it’s in THE SAME DAMN TIMEZONE AS THE HOST CITY. Man, it’s bad enough that they have the US-Canada men’s hockey game on MSNBC instead of NBC, if they tape-delay it too I’m gonna hurt someone.

Sweden’s winning it all, so who cares about the US or Canada for that matter… Dan Boyle just had to leave the game here at Miami during the 2nd period… couldn’t stick around for the whole game, Miami games are more important than sharks games
Holmstrum’s hurt though, and had to pull out. Yeah, they just replaced him with Franzen, but they’re going to miss Holmstrum’s ass screening Nabokov, Miller, Kiprusoff, Vokoun, and Brodeur/Luongo. Yeah, they’re the defending gold medal winners, but Lidstrom is also four years older.
I’d say Canada, Russia, and Sweden are the three favorites, with Finland and the US on the outside looking in. But who knows, Miller could stand on his head and get the US to the medal round. And Russia, well, their PP is something insane like Kovalchuk-Malkin-Semin Ovechkin-Markov. I doubt any PK can shut that down.

No way in hell would i want to go up against that Russian PP… Although like always, Canada’s front line is pretty dominant with Crosby! It’ll be a fun olympics for ice hockey, just hoping to watch some of the sharks players do well, Murray on Sweden. Do they allow fighting in it?
Canada’s top line is pretty good, but it doesn’t have the same overwhelming firepower as an Ovechkin-Malkin-Semin line, or Kovalchuk-Datsyuk-whoever second line (sorry, totally blanking on who’s the other second line winger). Canada does have the depth, because Russia’s bottom six definitely drops off quite a bit, while Canada’s third line is either HTML (Heatley-Thornton-Marleau) or Perry-Getzlaf-Staal, both of which are bona-fide top lines for any NHL team out there.
On the defensive side of things, Canada’s defense is deeper and more skilled, but I have to give the edge to Russia’s goaltending (pedigree aside, Canada’s goalies have both been pulled the past week, while Nabokov has absolutely dominated and established himself as a legitimate Vezina candidate).
I don’t think they allow fights, or at least, they don’t have the same five minute minor system. But since it’s on NHL-sized ice this year, it’ll be a lot more physical than Olympic hockey is normally. I expect to see MURRAY SMASH quite a bit. Hopefully not on a fellow Shark, though.

Either way you put it, Canada and Russia have a hell of a front line, that would be pretty intimidating. I mean, i’m pretty sure there will be some anger when they’re on the ice, in any sport there is, no matter what, it’s all part of the competition
From the first day
Canada is going to be siiiick. Granted, they were playing Norway, but man, 8-0? With only one practice? The Nash-Crosby-Iginla line is going places. And the defense is so stacked – Seabrook was probably their worst defenseman, and he was an absolute physical force. Boyle and Marleau led the defense and forwards in ice time respectively, which was pretty awesome.
USA is definitely going to surprise a few people. They only won 3-1, but Switzerland was ranked right behind them, so it’s not like they squeaked out a win against Belarus or someone. Lots of grit and defensively-responsible players. Whitney sucks, but that’s why he wasn’t named to the team until Martin got injured. Not a fan of the patented Ron Wilson “now that we have a lead in the third period we’re going to sit back and eventually let the other team back into this game” strategy, but oh well.
Russia’s group of forwards is crazy scary. It’s 7-2 right now with a half a period left. They sure as hell aren’t going to have any trouble scoring. It’s like, the anti-Giants But their defense? Well, let’s just say they bought into the mantra of, " a good offense is your best defense," and ran with it. Nabokov and Bryzgolov are going to have to stand on their heads when Russia actually plays someone good, amazing firepower or not.
Sweden, Finland, the Czechs, Slovakia, Germany, and Belarus haven’t played yet, so no word on them. But Sweden is really the only one of those to keep an eye on, although the first two teams after them could pull an upset.

Or cutting away from the 4th overtime period to cover the exciting finals of men’s doubles ice dancing… I’ll be happy.
this is the kind of stuff that amazes me with the tape delays
Like, the false starts for speed skating the other night. You taped events 12 hours ago, and you’re STILL showing false starts? I’d rather see other competitors in other events (like more than 4 downhill skiiers, etc.)
And, I like polar bears and learning about the host country, but can we put the Mary Carillo travelogue on the Travel Channel or MSNBC at midnight, instead of the marquee events? Sheesh.

Also, I don’t get the Mogul competition. So you’re racing… but you have to slow down to do tricks… and the tricks combine arbitrarily with your time to create an overall score? But you want to go fast. I guess since everybody is doing tricks, theoretically everybody slows down the same, but it still feels inherently wrong.
I guess think that while combining racing and trick-performing is a novel idea, it’s also a stupid Olympic event.

My 3-year old son has apparently decided he likes watching baseball with me!
Last night, he asked to watch the Roger Clemens game on the MLB Network instead of storytime, and just now he walked into the living room, turned on the tv, and said, “Ball!”

Hey all.
I’m on a 2-hour clock to start and finish an opinion piece arguing that decriminalization of drugs would be good but legalization would be bad.
If anybody has any insights, facts, opinions, or links on the topic…?

Can you help clarify the distinction between decriminilization and legalization? For a less legal mind, I’m not sure what the difference is between something simply not being criminal and something being legal.
I don't know about that, to the groin.
by howtheyscored on Feb 15, 2010 4:03 PM PST up reply actions
It’s a problem for me, too. I threw in my support to write on either side of the debate, and the editor said I had to be the con side of drug legalization, but I cannot write in support of prohibition.
I would remove laws against possession, etc., for sure.
To keep on the opposite side of the person writing in favor of legalization, I’m thinking I could possibly be for taking away those laws, but against giving the producers and dealers any credibility by taxing the production/sale or letting them set up legal “drug selling shops”.
Does that even make any sense?

You’re saying you’d make drug dealing legal, but wouldn’t tax it. Sounds like a sweet job to have.

I worded it badly.
This is my better-worded thought, from below.
I would be against criminalizing the use of drugs, but for criminalizing the trafficking of drugs.

After the 2002 World Series loss, Sabean said he admired the Angels’ consistent ability to go from first to third on a single, which the Giants could not do.
Oh good, I’m glad he’s done something about that since then.
I try not to break the rules, but merely to test their elasticity.
Frightening. Basically, he constructed a team that nearly won the World Series, but because they lost it by a hair, he focuses on one, arbitrary thing that the winning team did better than us and changes his entire philosophy around it.
How did he change his philosophy? Because I saw an awful lot of station-to-station baseball on the Giants before last season.
"Those that drink the Kool-Aid, please leave the room."
He stopped targeting high-quality station-to-station types (Kent, Burks, early JT Snow, Sanders and Bell) with gamers who grit out extra bases and “play the game the right way”.
And then he decided to make Bengie Molina the centerpiece of the offense, thereby limiting any rally to 90-foot increments.
"Those that drink the Kool-Aid, please leave the room."
I’m reading “The Godfather”. I always loved the movie, but have never actually read the book.

Eerily, I am drinking a Sam Adams Cream Stout and just finished watching the film adaptation of King’s Christine on Netflix Instant.
I’ve never read her, but I know she wrote Nickel and Dimed which I’ve heard was good. I hate positive thinking, so the book appealed to me. How is the cream stout?
#1 FanShot Champion
I hate positive thinking
I’m thinking around here… you may find one or two other people who agree with this.
I read Nickel and Dimed in college. What struck me the most is how expensive it is to be poor. You can’t afford to sign a 1-year lease, so you end up paying week-to-week to live in a motel for more overall money. Job-related injuries are more likely, and employer-based health-care is less plentiful.
The Cream Stout is a decent beer, but I don’t think it’s a very good take on the style. It’s got a fairly pronounced hop-flavor, which overrides the lactose-flavor. It tastes almost like a light, low-proof Russian Imperial, as a result. It’s hard to find really good Cream Stouts—-of those I’ve tried, Left Hand’s is my favorite.
Yeah, poor people get much less quality for their dollar. Go to a grocery store in the inner city sometime and see the food (meats, veggies, etc.) that gets stocked. Totally different from what I see.
The cream stout is a style that I don’t think I have much experience with. I’ve had some Left Hand brews, I’ll look for their cream stout. I also picked up a 6 pack of Souther Tier’s IPA which is pretty good.

Forgot, I also picked up a 22 oz of Sam Adams Noble Pils. I read some good reviews of it on Beer Advocate. I generally don’t like Pilsners but I thought I would give it a try.

I thought it was OK
My wife and I went and saw it. Neither of us expected much—we just wanted an excuse to go out. We both thought it was pretty OK, not nearly as dreckish as we’d feared. I thought that most of the stories were pretty good, with a few good surprises, both in stories and performances (both surprised to say we liked Ashton Kutcher, and—amazingly—Taylor Swift). There were a few laughs and some nice moments. I’d rate it “Little Man Leaning Forward, Smiling”.

I always knew that the 60’s were dominated by pitching, but looking at the league averages for hitters blew my mind. For instance, in 1968 the league average hitter in the MLB put up a slash of: .237/.299/.340
#1 FanShot Champion
That cant be true. And LOL for the OBP still being better than Bengie’s.

McCovey’s 1968 is one of the best years any hitter has ever had. His peak is underrated because it was right in the middle of the most extreme pitchers’ era in history.
I was promised lasagna.
are you sure you don't mean 1969?
1968: .293 / .378 / .545, 174 OPS+
1969: .320 / .453 / .656, 209 OPS+

OPS+ is interesting to compare across these eras
For example:
Maury Wills, 1964: .275 / .318 / .324 – 87 OPS+
Randy Winn, 2009: .262 / .318 / .353 – 75 OPS.

On the other hand, I found this:
Lg average for 1999: .282/.358/.453
That year was so ridiculous that Mike Lieberthal put up a .300/.363/.551 with 31 HRs as a catcher(!), and did not get a SINGLE MVP vote.
…and yet two years earlier, Deivi Cruz got an MVP vote with a .241 / .263 / .314 line. LOL sportswriters.

No.
There are some weird MVP votes out there – Charlie Hayes got votes in 1995 with a 96 OPS+ and without being remarkable in any of the stats that voters usually overvalue, like RBIs – but that one really takes the cake.
Hmm, in 1995, Barry finished twelfth – behind Ron Gant, although Barry was better in AVG, OBP, SLG, HR, R, RBI, BB, SO, and every other category I can find. And it goes without saying that Barry was better defensively. But the Giants sucked and the Reds won their division. Of course, they won their division by nine games, so the whole “most valuable, not best” argument is even more dubious than usual.

What the...
Mays at #8? That’s awful. He should be first. Maybe second to Aaron, just because Aaron was more consistent, while Mays faded a bit by the end of the decade.
I mean, how could he be lower than McCovey? Mays was just as good a hitter in 1960’s (McCovey hit .279/.378/.546, Mays hit .300/.377/.559), but averaged 120 PA’s more per year, which is a ton. Even by old school stats – Mays averaged more home runs, more RBI, more RS, was a much better base-runner…and let’s just say he was a tad more evaluable defensively.
I think Mays is the only player the game has seen who has a very solid case for best player of two different decades.

I made a full Japanese dinner for Boyfriend Von CurrentEvents Sunday: avocado rolls, Crab salad in peach halves, Clear soup with chicken balls and enoki mushrooms, Maple Colored spicy fried chicken, Mushroom rice (with shiitake, maitake, and shimeji mushrooms), pumpkin supreme (kabocha), Tomato salad with shiso leaves, and Lemon tofu cake. We had a romantic and fun Sunday morning, shopping at the San Jose Japantown farmer’s market and the Nijiya Market in Jtown, then coffee at a cute little bistro. We walked home hand in hand…and saw my building had been evacuated due to a fire. We couldn’t get back in until 530pm. We wandered around the neighborhood and campus for hours together. Neither of us were happy with the situation, but at least we were together.
As for the food, I cooked and prepped it all solo (except for the rolls, I don’t have roll-making tools) in three hours. Boyfriend loved it all. I thought the cake was a little lackluster, but I plan on redoing it with some changes; more sugar, plus perhaps a ribbon of jam throughout.

PS
Valentine’s Day is still asinine, even though I’m blissfully in love. Fortunately boyfriend shares the sentiment. I still hate the annoying commercials and stupid romcom films marketed to my gender. That ad with the woman who sobs like her stomach is going to fall out of her butt when she gets the teddy bear? Good god. I mean, boyfriend has done some swoon-worthy things for me (like arranging a song for me to perform at his jazz combo concert). But those things are sweet and romantic because he knows me, and I don’t behave like a simp over a generic gesture on a forced holiday.
We hit Walgreen’s yesterday for half price candy. All was not lost. I still had the best time waiting at the bus stop with him and enjoying a huge $5 box of Whitman’s sampler.

The last book I read was King Leopold’s Ghost, about Belgian colonization of the Congo.
I think the next one I read will be The Three Musketeers.

King Leopold’s Ghost is a seriously good and revolting book.
In the end, America will be remembered for three things: the Bill of Rights, jazz, and baseball.
Yeah, I noticed both of those things.
Also, I liked at the end, how it was almost a side note that the other European countries were almost as bad.
GROUGTHINK ALERT
The first Chester Arthur fanboy ever.
Very true
The Congo was just a galling example. I mean, the guy wanted and African colony and decided that violent slavery was the perfect way to build a “work-force”, so he researched the subject in the Spanish archives. Just ridiculous. But yeah, that does nothing to excuse the conduct of any European nation in its African (and other) colonies.
In the end, America will be remembered for three things: the Bill of Rights, jazz, and baseball.
How many epic gorilla-Belgian battles were there?

actual Giants-related content!
I was listening to some Baseball America podcasts earlier, and in the one on the NL West top ten organizational lists, John Manuel sounded really, really down on Posey. Mainly because some scout told him that Posey’s receiving skills were lousy – basically made him sound like he would be the worst in the league, and like he be a disaster trying to catch guys like Lincecum, Cain, Sanchez, and Wilson. I am skeptical of this, I have to say.
On the other hand, Manuel was really positive on Bumgarner. He thought Bumgarner was a better prospect than Posey and that his velocity dip last year wasn’t a big concern. He said the secondary stuff was a bigger issue, but felt that Bumgarner was a pitcher who could thrive even if his secondary stuff never became special.
Manuel also thinks that URLs have backslashes in them, which is a pet peeve of mine, but that’s another issue.

So many LOLs
But here is the important question as pitchers and catchers report to spring training Wednesday: Will an older, slower lineup score more runs?
“I think they can,” Giants manager Bruce Bochy said. “It’s hard to quantify how many runs, and I know there are ways of doing that, but we’ll have more depth in the lineup and more experience. Having guys with the ability to get the big hits, the two-out hits, that’s going to help us put runs on the board more consistently.”
“We may not be as fast as we were last year, but it doesn’t mean you don’t do things to create runs,” Bochy said. "You may not be in straight steal mode, but you do the little things. We may be bunting more
Why do I even read anything Bochy says? First, it just makes me mad. And second, he seems to lie a lot. It does me no good on both counts.
