BREAKING: Chris Haft is the front office's toady
Okay, so the man comes in for a lot of criticism and mockery here. This article is especially absurd, though. Some highlights:
- He lauds the front office for signing two "competent" hitters.
- He mentions that John Bowker, Emmanuel Burriss, Kevin Frandsen, Travis Ishikawa, Fred Lewis, Andres Torres, Eugenio Velez, Buster Posey, and Eli Whiteside are "unlikely" to all make the team. Really, Chris? We're not going to be carrying nine bench players this time? Damn. My hopes were so high.
- He mentions that Sanchez is LIKELY to start the season on the DL. Originally, Bochy said that was possible - maybe I missed it but I hadn't heard any updates. So his first DL stint of the year is updated to "likely." HOORAY!
- "the Giants realize a fast start will give them a significant edge over their competition." YOU DON'T SAY! I thought it was good to lose every game in April and save your strength so you can be MONEY DOWN THE STRETCH, NERDS!
- The closing quote from Sabean: "You have the opportunity to have depth." Um, what!?

To be fair, I’m also pretty worried that Pablo will play 13 seasons with a 142 OPS+, 234 Home Runs, an MVP, two All-Star appearances, and have a 151 OPS+ for the Giants over the course of five seasons, and then give us a great return via trade. It keeps me up nights. :(

I’m concerned he will only make two AS games because I would think less-than-fat pandas deserve to make more games than that in 13 years. They are endangered after all
I think the temptation with Sandoval is to pinch yourself and think he’s too good to be true. When’s the last time we developed a player like this? You can say Matt Williams or Will Clark, but those guys were projected for greatness when they were drafted. I think that’s why fans are worried about his future.
No Edgar, it's not your fault, it's the fault of the idiot that plays you
Are fans worried about him? I haven’t noticed that at all.
Anyway, saying you’re worried he’s “another Kevin Mitchell” is just a very odd way of putting it is all. Mitchell was an amazing player who had great years for the Giants. He eventually started to break down from injuries, but not until he was a good deal older than Sandoval is now.

I think he’s talking about injuries. Mitchel was great, but played, like, 3 full seasons in his entire career. He passed 600 PA’s only once.
I was promised lasagna.
He was over 500 PA and 130 games every year from 1987-1990, though. It wasn’t until after that that he really started to break down, and by that point he was like six years older than Sandoval is now.
I figure that’s what he’s talking about, but it’s a pretty weird way of putting it.

He was once involved in a trade that included four separate players named Kevin. Mitchell, Brown (not THE Kevin Brown), Armstrong, and McReynolds.

My biggest question, is why someone would think we should sign a big bat, only to have them around as a backup? Have they seen our offense the last 5 years?

HEAVEN HELP ME
I’m engaging in a debate with a guy in Facebook comments – this guy:
Paul Fujimoto Save the post Josh Burnett. Sanchez will rehab diligently and be a .300 hitter. Huff will contribute 20 homers from the 6th spot. Rowand is the one that needs to step up and give them 25+ homers. They need Sanchez and Uribe in the lineup together and Renteria on the bench or gone.

The easiest thing you could do is point out what mistakes a GM (with a budget) has made and now look back and say what he should have done. And at the same time you don’t give him any credit for things he has done right. I thought Randy Winn, Bengie, and Omar were pretty good acquisitions…. how about Jeremy Affeldt?? Haft is writing to a general audience, not just McC readers. His job is to write stories that are accessible to the average fan of baseball. Do you really think the Giants would publish a bunch of stuff on their site that was bashing the team at all?
YOU EAT YOUR DAMN EGGROLL
As long as MLB.com and the team sites maintain the appearance of some sort of journalistic enterprise, they’re fair game.
VAE PVTO DEVS FIO
MLB.com and the team sites aren’t supposed to be journalistic enterprises, they’re supposed to sell MLB and the 30 teams to all of us. Asking Chris Haft to be objective about the Giants is like asking Pravda to admit Lenin might’ve gotten it wrong.

Despite the disclaimer, I don’t think Haft would be around very long if he continually wrote articles saying the Giants’ will stink and management did a horrible job this off season. You have to take his stories with more than a grain of salt. As for optimistic fans in general, what’s wrong with being optimistic? Pitchers and catchers are two days away. This is the time for optimism if there ever is. You can’t condemn people as idiots just because they hope the veterans that Sabean signed have a big year in 2010, even if all signs point to that not happening.
No Edgar, it's not your fault, it's the fault of the idiot that plays you
I don’t have a problem with fans being optimistic – I used to be optimistic about the team, too, back when they deserved it! And, as I mentioned in another thread a while back, I think I’m crazily optimistic about a lot of things when it comes to this team – I think Tim Lincecum will continue to be the best pitcher in baseball for years to come, that Pablo Sandoval will only get better, that Sergio Romo will be an elite closer, that John Bowker will be a solid Major League hitter if given a chance, that Buster Posey will be the next Joe Mauer, that Roger Kieschnick will develop into a good starting right fielder, that Neal is Real, that Chris Gloor has the potential to be a really good pitcher, that Tommy Joseph will become our best first baseman since Will Clark, and that we have one of the best minor league systems in the game. How much more optimistic can I be!?
In any case, I just reserve my right to roll my eyes is all.

I have a friend that occasionally posts here, (Mordy from Monsey) and he’s so pessimistic about the upcoming season that it’s literally a chore talking to him sometimes. He even canceled his Direct TV MLB subscription. I’m so excited about the season that not only did I renew, but I also added the mlbtv.com subscription so I can watch day games at work on my new I phone. And you know what’s the funny thing about it? We both have about the same expectations for the team. The difference is that he expected the team to improve so much during this off season that they would be a World Series favorite, and he’s disgusted with the job Sabean did. Why look at things that way? Baseball’s starting again!! For all the things you mentioned and a few more, I’m excited. If everything goes wrong and the team tanks, I’ll get to see a lot more prospects as the year goes on. Man, I just love to watch baseball. I can’t imagine being down this time of year.
No Edgar, it's not your fault, it's the fault of the idiot that plays you
Oh, I’m very much looking forward to the start of baseball. Hell, I’ve been spending the offseason downloading Giants games from iTunes and watching classic games on the MLB Network because I miss baseball so damned much. Circumstances permitting, I’ll be right here in the gameday thread come opening day, cheering on the team.
But I’m still pretty disappointed by this offseason. Not so much because Sabean didn’t magically transform the team into a surefire 100 game winner, because I never expected that, but because, in my opinion, he made the exact same kinds of stupid, pointless moves that lead the team off the cliff in the first place, and because most of the moves were redundant.
There are different things entirely in my opinion.

it kind of amazes me anyone reads those stories any more. You already have the Chronicle to regurgitate the comments of Brain and Bork.
Giants pitching coach Dave Righetti. "I treat Timmy differently from most pitchers: I leave him alone."
Bengie Molina: "I don't understand why they didn't want to commit to another year, with my numbers and my experience and things like that." Brain Sabean: "He's certainly welcomed back with open arms".
Mychael Urban: Wow. Probably Dye at this point. Good outfielder, could adapt to RF at AT&T, good RBI guy.

What do you really expect from a pre-Spring Training puff piece? This isn’t about a deep exploration of the off season, it’s a “hey, the sun shining, the boys are reporting, it’s baseball time!” kind of article.

Am I the only one who sees that as a good move? Mota was good last year, it’s a no-risk minor league deal, and if there’s one thing Sabean can do (and evidence suggests there is only one thing Sabean can do) it’s find cheap, effective bullpen guys in the scrap heap.
more from the Facebook comments on the article
Johnny Smith If the Giants would simply play fundamental baseball, i.g., use the sacrifice more often with position players instead of leaving the sacrifice solely to the pitcher position, the Giants will add 5-10 games in the win column. Another 5-10 games last year would have put them well into the playoffs. Instead, the Giants, like most of MLB, play for the big inning and often lose opportunities to score.
4 hours ago · Report
Putting aside what you may think of the sacrifice bunt, consider this: he’s basically saying that bunting more often could potentially provide as much value as Barry Bonds did in 2003, when he was an excellent defender and posted a line of .341 / .529 / 749. Um, yeah.
