Offered Lincecum a deal
Looks like we are at least discussing a long term deal with Timmy!

Pretty fair deal, but he’s going to want more, and after winning his case tomorrow he’s going to get it. I’m pretty meh on a long term deal on someone who’s four years away from free agency anyway. I like to see long term deals that take away FA years, and Tim’s a long way from there right now.

Giants pitching coach Dave Righetti. "I treat Timmy differently from most pitchers: I leave him alone."
Bengie Molina: "I don't understand why they didn't want to commit to another year, with my numbers and my experience and things like that." Brain Sabean: "He's certainly welcomed back with open arms".
Mychael Urban: Wow. Probably Dye at this point. Good outfielder, could adapt to RF at AT&T, good RBI guy.

My career path, have you seen it?
That’s a fair offer. They must be real confident they’re going to win tomorrow. If not, you don’t get $37 mil total for three years if his first number is $8 million.
Not sure what to do about my screen name at this point...

Why are they so intent on keeping his salary under 10 million this year
by AndYourBirdCanSing on Feb 11, 2010 9:14 AM PST reply actions
Baggs had a consperacy theory on this. Involved, not setting a new precedent, not pissing off MLB or MLB owners and those not pissed off owners voting in favor the Giants keeping territorial rights in SJ.

I do remember that but it seems like that doesn’t matter if they’re offering a 3 year deal.
by AndYourBirdCanSing on Feb 11, 2010 9:23 AM PST up reply actions
It still does, b/c 1st year salary would still be a record.

But, it has no effect on arbitration precedents
by AndYourBirdCanSing on Feb 11, 2010 9:30 AM PST up reply actions
You can still cite it in arb hearings.

If you’re going by those rules, then you could just cite any contract ever.
by AndYourBirdCanSing on Feb 11, 2010 9:51 AM PST up reply actions
No, you can only cite contracts of players with similar service level. So the Giants and Tim can cite Cole Hamels 3 year 21 million contract he signed last year as Cole was a 1st time arb eligible player.

very true say hey
reality is that the two sides could probably reach a total value deal, dollar wise. the sticking point, as say hey mentioned, is ALL about the 1st year money and the ramifications for the players union. re-setting the bar.

more evidence
this case is way more about mlb vs. players union, than giants vs. timmy
interesting approach...
make the league the bad guy. Avoid pissing Timmy off.
Fuck it why doesn’t this happen when somebody else is at stake? The labor agreement, salary inflation, territorial rights—I just want my Timmy!

They could also go through the hearing and reach agreement on a multiyear deal afterwards. Obviously the side that wins the arb hearing would hold the upper hand in the negotiations.

Keith Law:
Sabean’s offer far too low
“If Lincecum wins his arb hearing at $13 million, he’ll be looking at likely raises to $16-17 million the following year and $20 million or more the year after that, and that’s assuming he doesn’t win a third Cy Young Award. It’s far from out of the question that he could earn $50 million over the next three years even with a slight regression in his performance, and I don’t see him earning as little as the offered $37 million unless he gets hurt. If Lincecum knows there’s something wrong with his arm, he should take the offer, but otherwise, I’m wondering if Sabean got into Timmy’s stash.”
I try not to break the rules, but merely to test their elasticity.
What analysis like this fails to realize is that not being on the hook for several years of guaranteed money has value as well. 3/37 is more than fair and it still leaves a year of arb eligibility on the table.
WHY IS BENGIE?!

Yeah, Klaw is dead wrong here. For a team like the Giants already dealing with a couple of bad contracts, with needs up and down the lineup and operating on a fixed budget, 3/37 to a pitcher (I don’t care how good you are, that’s still the position with the highest risk of injury or deterioration) with four years left of arb is fair.

What do the Giants' payroll obligation have to do with anything?
The arbitors won’t be listening to argument about how much the Giants can afford to pay Lincecum. He’s right that Lincecum, if healthy, should easily beat 37M over the next three seasons. And since he’s already going to get fuck you money just from his year one award, he has little incentive to sign long term just to avoid the risk of injury.

Not talking about arb but about the Giants’ 3/37 deal. Klaw said that it was stupid for Sabean to make that offer; I disagree. And damn it, it feels weird defending Sabes for a change.
I try not to break the rules, but merely to test their elasticity.
Yeah, we’re going to have to disagree here. I think 3/37 is a reasonable offer for the Giants as an organization to make.
I try not to break the rules, but merely to test their elasticity.
Sure it’s reasonable from the Giants POV, but so is 5 years/5M. If there’s no chance of the player accepting, it’s a pointless offer.
VAE PVTO DEVS FIO
I see what you’re saying but it’s only pointless if the Giants are absolutely resolute on signing Tim to a deal. From what Sabean has said in the past, I don’t think that’s the case. I think they’re open to rolling the dice and going year to year. And frankly, at this level of financial commitment with the health risks associated with pitchers, I have no problem with them taking that approach.

Does Garret Anderson need 3,000 hits to get into the Hall?
Klaw (1:39 PM)
No, he needs TEH FEAR. Seriously, he’d be a worse selection than Rice or Dawson.
Obviously any links in the above post are probably NSFW
As long as they do nothing to piss off Timmy.

At least in 2011, we’ll still have baseball unlike the NFL and the NBA, wont that be crazy to steal all of the die hard NFL, and NBA fans back over to baseball, America’s Pasttime.
