Just last night I was thinking about a late-season game last year when the Giants were pretty much out of it, and Miller went on a half-inning-long riff on great hikes/campsites at Yosemite. One thing I always like is Jon’s effort when it comes to trying to correctly pronounce names, even when he fails.

I remember him being one of the first, if not the first, to pronounce it Wilson Bete-meat, instead of the oft used Wilson Bete-mitt. He found out that they had previously had it wrong simply because no one before Jon had asked Betemit how he wanted it to be pronounced.

It may have something to do with the TV v. Radio styles. It’s his descriptiveness on the radio is where he shines, IMO.

I can see that. On radio he has the latitude to go all extemporaneous and use his descriptive powers and all that; on TV, especially ESPN’s biweekly baseball telecast, any announcer is just crippled. Strangely enough I think that may be why I like Kuiper on TV. He doesn’t get in the way of the pictures.

This is how good Jon Miller is...

I often find myself driving home and listening to Miller on the radio to start the game. When I get home, it is a difficult decision to turn off the car radio and walk into the house. I have waited many times until the inning break to go into the house.

In the house is a 55" 1080p television. Miller is so good, his descriptions of the game are often better than that broadcast HD picture> Conrats Jon, well deserved recognition.

I ran into him at the airport in Phoenix on a Saturday night in 2003. I was laying over there on a trip from Dallas to Flagstaff. He was on his way from the SF@ARZ game to to the plane I had just left, which was headed to Chicago. The Cubs were hosting Sunday Night Baseball. I like to think that he got my seat.

We passed each other on those moving walkways, and I hollered, “Hey, Jon Miller! You’re the best!” He said, “Nice hat! You coming from the game?” I started to reply, but the walkway had whisked him away like an egg-shaped ship in the night.
