LOL – it’s pretty empty in here, but good job on getting the word out Gobroks.
Bad news: the Giants lose an interesting LOOGY candidate to in-division rival AZ – Paterson appeared to be a close clone of their current LOOGY extraordinaire, Javier Lopez.
Good news: the Giants get $50,000 from the D’backs to pay for new shoes for Sabean – he goes through them so quickly with all of the tire-kicking he has to do each year.

It says a lot about the current state of the Giants major league bullpen that 2 AAA relievers that aren’t even in our top 10 relief candidates get picked in the Rule 5 (I’m including Turpen in this since he was with the Giants his entire career until they traded him in July). It aloo says a lot about how desperate many teams are for help in their major league pens.

If I were GM of another major league team, I’d be calling to see what it would take for me to deal for Dick Tidrow.

I can’t see more than 5 of the 19 major league draftees sticking all season with their new clubs. My guess would be these 5 have the best shot at it:
Josh Rodriguez: The Pirates won’t be competing again in 2011, so they can easily carry him for the year.
Joe Paterson: the AZ pens sucks and he only has to fill the limited LOOGY role to stick all season.
Brad Emaus: has an advanced approach with the bat (should be a good PH) and can play all IF positions but SS.
Aneury Rodriguez: the Astros will suck next year and their pitching will be bad, so it will be easy for them to keep him around.
Pedro Beato: the Mets pen is junk and Beato has a lot of upside in his arm.

BTW, that was a good article. I’m happy that Bond, Brock Bond and Tyler Graham are still on the team. I think both could still end up being fringe major league contributors in the next few years – especially if we run into a spate of injuries.

Jacob Blackwood
I think the powers that be got this one wrong. He’s never been a Giants farmhand, so, unless the Giants signed him to a minor league deal in the past 2 months, the Pads drafted him out of the Marlins system:

He wasn’t in the Marlins system. He played with a Kansas City Indy league team, and missed 2010 for an unknown reason. He was signed as a minor league free agent by the Giants.

I knew that he hadn’t played for the Marlins’ system for at least a year (he did play 27 games for them in 2009), but thought it was just due to injuries. The Giants must have signed him just recently, because he never showed up on any minor league affiliate’s roster during the 2010 season. If so, it seems strange that the Pads would draft him since they could have signed him for free after the Marlins released him.

Blackwood signed in early October.
Maybe the Padres tried to sign him and he chose the Giants offer instead. It seems to me that minor league free agents that have just signed with a team should be exempt. It doesn’t seem fair to them.
Where do you find this kind of stuff?

Meet the newest Giants' farmhands
Don’t expect anything from these guys beyond being minor league roster-fillers.
Justin Dowdy: a LH reliever who has a chance to be a LOOGY. He’s only pitched 37 innings (in 25 games) the past 2 seasons, so there’s probably some injury issues involved.
Dowdy’s minor league history & stats
Dashenko Ricardo: a C from Curacao. The good: even though he’s already played 4 seasons of pro ball, he won’t turn 21 until next March. The bad: can’t hit at all, and he has to be the skinniest catcher of all time (6’, 160 lb.).
Ricardo’s minor league history & stats
Matt Sartor: A big (6’6", 260 lb.) RH reliever. Good: in 237 innings he has a lifetime K/9=10.6, versus a BB/9=3.2 – that’s quite excellent. Bad: He’s already 26, has always been old for the levels that he’s pitched in, and has never pitched above the AA level.

Eugenio Velez - Best (minor league portion) Rule 5 draft pick EVER!
To clarify, the reason not to get excited about these guys is because in the entire history of the minor league portion of the Rule 5 Draft the best pickup ever (in terms of contributing to the team at the major league level) was Eugenio Velez. In fact, only 4 other draftees ever even got more than a cup of coffee in the major leagues. That would include the household names Jorge Sosa, Aaron Miles, Brian Buscher and Edgar Gonzalez (the second baseman).
Here’s the scoop as reported by BaseballAmerica, followed by a money quote from the article:
http://www.baseballamerica.com/today/minors/news/2009/269287.html
Players selected in the major league portion of the Rule 5 draft, held annually at the Winter Meetings, face long odds of sticking with the club that drafts them. But that’s nothing compared with players taken in the Triple-A and Double-A phases of the draft. Historically, they have had virtually no chance of forging big leagues careers.
"There ain’t much to being a ballplayer, if you’re a ballplayer." - Honus Wagner
Uh....
…wasn’t Dan Uggla a Rule 5 pick? I’m way too sleepy to look that up, but that’s how I remember it. Or did I fall into the sarchasm?

Yeah
The 3 guys we picked up were in the minor league portion of the draft – which comes after the major league portion. There are 3 key differences between the 2.
1. The minor league portion draftees don’t have to be kept on the 25 man roster the entire next season
2. The minor league portion draftees cost at least $38,000 less.
3. After the regular portion of the draft, each major league team can add an additional 38 AAA players and 37 AA players to their protected list that other teams can’t pick from. That’s why you never get any good players in the minor league rounds. By that times teams are able to protect about 40 of their top minor leaguers at AAA and 40 more at AA.
"There ain’t much to being a ballplayer, if you’re a ballplayer." - Honus Wagner
Not to quibble with your perfectly valid point, but I’d say that all four of those guys were more productive than Eugenio. Especially Sosa who pitched in nearly 300 and gamesMiles who played about 800 games and once had a near 2 WAR season (per BR). In fact, going by BR’s WAR calc, Eugenio is currently a negative WAR player in his MLB career, while all of the other 4 are just in the positive WAR. On the other hand, Miles and Sosa at least had most of their productive years after leaving the team that took them in the minor league Rule 5, so I guess that’s a factor. Still, negative WAR is even worse than regular WAR I’m pretty sure.
MY DAD WAS WRONG!
I take your side on this, because I didn’t look each guy up. Apparently the distiction that BA was making (that I didn’t realize) was that Velez was the most valuanle to the team that drafted him – not any other tram that they eventually got traded to.

Aaron King, please pitch better.
McC Wiki - for all you newcomers out there.
Not yet
I can’t believe that he has great velo, because then he should have had much more of a buzz – and been drafted out of college. I’m guessing he’s very deceptive, throws sidearm, or throws a knuckler.

That's fitting
He’s almost the exact same size and shape of Jorge Bucardo – so he’s sure to be as good. Get’er dun, Tidrow!

i see 38 names on the roster, couldn’t they have protected Paterson at this point esp after his AFL performance and people like Keith Law noticing him? Hinshaw is still on the roster for some reason….could have let him go…
Several posters have wondered about that in the last 10 days. As for the 2 open roster spots I assume he’s keeping 1 open for another SS, and 1 for BBelt in case he makes it on the team out of ST.
"There ain’t much to being a ballplayer, if you’re a ballplayer." - Honus Wagner
would you protect Hinshaw over Paterson though? Giants had to expect someone would take Paterson and Hinshaw is already 28(3.5 years older) and seems to be getting worse….
by repeat_in_2011 on Dec 9, 2010 7:09 PM PST up reply actions
I would have swapped them. Even if you don’t think either guy was going to be in your pen next season I would have protected Paterson instead of Hinshaw, because:
1. I think Paterson actually had some trade value after his stint in the AFL, while I don’t think Hinshaw has any trade value.
2. I think that Hinshaw would not be able to stick on a major league 25 man roster all next year, while Paterson should stick easily with his superior LOOGY potential.
3. It was very predictable that Paterson was likely to go to the D’backs, considering their draft position, need for bullpen help, and desire to sting the Giants.
"There ain’t much to being a ballplayer, if you’re a ballplayer." - Honus Wagner
yeah, makes sense….
i’m glad they didn’t lose anyone else notable…was kind of afraid someone would pick Quinowski coming back from injury – i think he should have been eligible but i’m not sure how that missed season factors in…
by repeat_in_2011 on Dec 9, 2010 8:26 PM PST up reply actions
Doesn't removing him (Hinshaw) from the 40-man expose him to waivers?
I think Sabean was hedging his bets a bit. He thought that it would be more likely that the team that drafts Paterson will be unable to keep him on the roster than any team claiming Hinshaw. For some odd reason, I guess Sabean wanted to keep both.
Brian Bocock and Nathan Adcock need to play on the same team at some point
