 i disagree with this part:

“The pieces are in place for the Phillies to move a minor leaguer for Rowand, and the Giants are under a lot of financial pressure to trade Rowand

trading Rowand won’t alleviate any financial pressure and i don’t think the Giants are under much financial pressure anyway…i wouldn’t mind seeing a trade for Ibanez i guess but i don’t see how shipping Rowand off for some minor leaguers and paying 80-90% of his salary is going to help….

Rowand is useless.

If we could get someone to pay 20% I would be down, no matter what the return is.

that's not true

He’s useful as a backup CF. He’s just way, way overpaid for a backup.

by boonitez on Dec 8, 2010 6:21 PM PST up reply actions

You wouldn’t dump him for 5 or 6 mil and the roster spot? I’m not sure he’s much more useful to the team than Nate at this point, and it seems unlikely both survive the season as Giants. If we can open up a roster spot for Nate and relieve ourselves of 4-6 million that can be put towards another middle infielder or a long reliever/spot starter, then I think its a good move.

Rowand is a pretty good backup plan for any of the Giants outfielders going down.

He’d be more valuable if he’d scoot around the outfield instead of sticking only at CF though.

But either way… I wouldn’t want any of the AAA outfielders taking his spot because I really don’t trust Torres’ health and Burrell’s performance.

If they offered up Ben Francisco and 10%-15% of the salary, then I’d definitely take that in a heartbeat.

by AmorVincitOmnia on Dec 8, 2010 7:55 PM PST up reply actions

but if we do that

Who backs up Torres in center? If he were to start in center over Torres he’d probably be worth around 1.5 WAR. If we dumped him and saved the 4-6 mil, who would you spend it on that wouldn’t be equally valuable? And given how shitty the market is for middle infielders, do you really think we could even get equal value from someone else with the money we saved?

Nate could play CF.
Ross could play CF.

That makes 4 CF that we currently have on the roster. Nice.

Sounds like my Baseball Mogul Giants roster, LOL

eh, its probably not a big deal either way….i just wouldn’t be surprised if Rowand had a half-decent season if they traded him back to Philadelphia…
