Yeah, it's pretty much what you'd expect from the estimable Mr. Phillips. The Giants have some holes on offense, so the solution is to spend big on free agents like Adrian Beltre and Vlad Guerrero, then round things out by signing Scott Podsednik.

Uh, no.

I thought Phillips was known as a non-numbers guy? He has a copy of Baseball Prospectus’ Baseball Between The Numbers on his bookshelf.

You know, when you look at Beltre’s and Carl Crawford’s numbers and age, and then consider that one got 7 years and $142M (and was going to get something similar had he signed with a different team), while the other hasn’t been offered more than 5 years and $70M (and isn’t even asking for more than 5/90), it’s really quite shocking. I mean, we already knew that Crawford got way too much money (despite Dave Cameron’s very odd support of the signing), and there’s been talk for years about Beltre being underrated, but this is just bizarre.

by Cookyman on Dec 26, 2010 3:23 PM PST reply actions

There's 2 under the radar problems with Beltre

1) It’s rumored that his last season in LA was PED-inspired.

2) Probably more important at this point, it’s long been rumored that he’s 2-3 years older than his reported age.

His defense is also his biggest asset, and defense doesn’t age as well as offensive production.

Is he an upgrade over Pablo next year? Probably. Is he worth the contract he is going to get? Probably not.

by BustaTheRippa on Dec 26, 2010 6:25 PM PST up reply actions

I'm not advocating signing Beltre

He’s not a good fit for us. I’m just comparing him to Crawford (whose skill-set will probably age worse than Beltre’s).

by Cookyman on Dec 27, 2010 8:53 AM PST up reply actions

With regard to #2, Beltre actually pretended to be older when he signed with the Dodgers.

by Natto on Dec 26, 2010 7:12 PM PST up reply actions

The rumour about Beltre’s age (like the one about Pujols) just doesn’t seem to make sense If Beltre is 3 years older than he says, he’s a genius, because it means he pulled of being an 18 year-old pretending to be a 15 year-old pretending to be a 16 year-old. Furthermore, he weighed 130 pounds when he was signed – he’s added at least 90 pounds since then . Again, it just doesn’t seem very likely that an 18 year-old would add 90+ pounds (without getting fat at all – Beltre is still very athletic) in 10 years. Or, at least, it seems much more likely for a 15 year old to do it.

I don’t know what to do with the PED rumours – his last season with the Dodgers was 7 years ago, anyway, so I don’t think anyone is really basing their opinion of Beltre on it.

by Cookyman on Dec 27, 2010 8:51 AM PST up reply actions

I think that they’re both symptoms of an underlying problem: basically that he’s hugely unpredictable and no one wants to pay him for a 7 WAR season they know he’ll never repeat.

His numbers in non-contract years are just as good as Crawford’s.

by Cookyman on Dec 27, 2010 7:42 AM PST up reply actions

idk, Crawford had 6 of last 7 years at 100 or greater on OPS+ inc 116 and 134 last 2 years…

Beltre, 5 of last 10 years has been below 100….

by repeat_in_2011 on Dec 27, 2010 10:02 AM PST up reply actions

last 5 years cumulative are pretty close though – Crawford 115 to 111…

maybe wOBA is better stat but i don’t see it on bb-ref….

by repeat_in_2011 on Dec 27, 2010 10:07 AM PST up reply actions

They’re pretty much the same with the bat – Crawford hits for a higher AVG, but draws fewer walks and has less power. Defense is close (both are probably the best fielders in the majors at their respective position), with probably an edge to Beltre for playing a tougher position. Crawford is also a really good baserunner.

I mean, I could see an argument for Crawford as the better player, but I can’t see an argument for it not being close.

by Cookyman on Dec 27, 2010 10:11 AM PST up reply actions

was closer than i thought….i had soured on Beltre after he had the monster year, then signed in Seattle and had terrible 2005 season…2006-2008 weren’t too bad though…

I guess the only plausible argument I can see for it is that players who the Red Sox and Yankees decide they absolutely have to have are simply more valuable.

I guess that should be “players whom”.

And rethinking it, that interpretation seems to be the only valid way to look at it; contextual value is really only a function of what the market will bear.

by Rolfyboy on Dec 27, 2010 6:22 AM PST up reply actions

The best way to put a team together is to make it as good as possible throughout the roster. It’s silly to think that just because their pitching is their strength that they don’t need to improve their offense which could lift them from strong to dominant.

Last September the Giants pitching put up one of the greatest months in the history of baseball, and the team went 18-8 lifting them to the title. But look at their 8 losses that month: 2-4, 1-3, 0-1, 0-1, 0-3, 1-2, 0-2, 9-10 ($%$^ Colorado).

A decent functioning offense could have made things a lot easier on that team (as we happily saw in the post-Atlanta portion of the post-season).

I don’t really get that argument. How much did they add in payroll for this season?

That still doesn’t change the fact that while the offense came through in the playoffs, there were many games where the offense didn’t show up. At one point in the season (I know it was early on) Sanchez gave up 4 hits to the Padres in two games and lost them both. The run averages seemed to be a bit misleading, mainly being padded by a few blow outs.

Great stuff

I nominate you to take over for Phillips and write the remaining team reports in his “Fixing the …” series. Even if you did absolutely no research on the teams I believe that you could fake it much better than Phiilips.

I do have 1 disagreement with you, though.

DeRosa is going to be a utility guy, not a central offensive presence, which will prevent the offense from imploding when he hurts his wrist again.

If Panda doesn’t come around in ST, then I can easily see DeRosa being named the starting 3B. We all know how Bochy’s initial decisions almost always favor the veterans. Even if Panda does play a lot at 3B, I think that DeRosa will likely see a bunch of starts there and at 2B. I just don’t trust Franchez to stay healthy for a whole season from here on out until he retires.

I’ve heard him on the radio a lot in NY, and he’s pretty entertaining with a good sense of humor. That’s why he keeps getting a job. Actual knowledge is secondary, if important at all. Sad to say, but they’re probably right. It’s about ratings. An actual show with real experts tossing out numbers for hours would probably bore the masses.

You're right

I grew up around NYC and listened to the WFAN as a kid every day…I still remember Phillips getting crucified when he was with the Mets and I always kinda felt bad for the guy, because he seemed like a nice guy…I find it funny that to this day, most Mets’ fans who I keep up with or hear, still blame Phillips for the disaster that was Zambrano for Kazmir. I have heard him go on radio and say “FOR THE LAST TIME, THAT WAS NOT ME!!!”

You’re right about ratings over knowledge as well. That is the way it works. Mike Francesa would be another fine example of that policy at WFAN.

I mean, the real reason he is probably on MLB Fanhouse is to boost traffic. His controversy with his intern makes him a polarizing figure and those are always good for ratings or webhits or what-have-you…

It’s just that his little video was so dumb on so many levels that I had spit some venom…

92-70 not 90-72

By signing Beltre, I think you’d be practically giving up on Pablo Sandoval. By putting him behind possibly Beltre, Huff, Ishi, and possibly Belt is frustrating considering that 1 season ago this guy was a NL MVP candidate. While Posednik is a good 5th OF option considering his SB ability and historically decent ability to get on base, there’s no room in an already crowded OF unless we do the improbable and trade Rownads contract. I don’t even want to touch the idea of starting Vlad in RF. I think we’d be calling for his head after the first week of the season. Listening to this actually makes me happy we have Sabean.
