Steve Phillips "fixes" the SF Giants
Yeah, it's pretty much what you'd expect from the estimable Mr. Phillips. The Giants have some holes on offense, so the solution is to spend big on free agents like Adrian Beltre and Vlad Guerrero, then round things out by signing Scott Podsednik.
Uh, no.

I thought Phillips was known as a non-numbers guy? He has a copy of Baseball Prospectus’ Baseball Between The Numbers on his bookshelf.

You know, when you look at Beltre’s and Carl Crawford’s numbers and age, and then consider that one got 7 years and $142M (and was going to get something similar had he signed with a different team), while the other hasn’t been offered more than 5 years and $70M (and isn’t even asking for more than 5/90), it’s really quite shocking. I mean, we already knew that Crawford got way too much money (despite Dave Cameron’s very odd support of the signing), and there’s been talk for years about Beltre being underrated, but this is just bizarre.
There's 2 under the radar problems with Beltre
1) It’s rumored that his last season in LA was PED-inspired.
2) Probably more important at this point, it’s long been rumored that he’s 2-3 years older than his reported age.
VAE PVTO DEVS FIO
His defense is also his biggest asset, and defense doesn’t age as well as offensive production.
Is he an upgrade over Pablo next year? Probably. Is he worth the contract he is going to get? Probably not.

I'm not advocating signing Beltre
He’s not a good fit for us. I’m just comparing him to Crawford (whose skill-set will probably age worse than Beltre’s).
With regard to #2, Beltre actually pretended to be older when he signed with the Dodgers.
Mr. F! | comics | art | New Nattowear | Unofficial McImage Directory | Confused? Check the McWiki
The rumour about Beltre’s age (like the one about Pujols) just doesn’t seem to make sense If Beltre is 3 years older than he says, he’s a genius, because it means he pulled of being an 18 year-old pretending to be a 15 year-old pretending to be a 16 year-old. Furthermore, he weighed 130 pounds when he was signed – he’s added at least 90 pounds since then . Again, it just doesn’t seem very likely that an 18 year-old would add 90+ pounds (without getting fat at all – Beltre is still very athletic) in 10 years. Or, at least, it seems much more likely for a 15 year old to do it.
I don’t know what to do with the PED rumours – his last season with the Dodgers was 7 years ago, anyway, so I don’t think anyone is really basing their opinion of Beltre on it.
plus he seems to have a great "playing for contract" year
but then falls off the table…i wouldn’t sign him…

idk, Crawford had 6 of last 7 years at 100 or greater on OPS+ inc 116 and 134 last 2 years…
Beltre, 5 of last 10 years has been below 100….

last 5 years cumulative are pretty close though – Crawford 115 to 111…
maybe wOBA is better stat but i don’t see it on bb-ref….
by repeat_in_2011 on Dec 27, 2010 10:07 AM PST up reply actions
They’re pretty much the same with the bat – Crawford hits for a higher AVG, but draws fewer walks and has less power. Defense is close (both are probably the best fielders in the majors at their respective position), with probably an edge to Beltre for playing a tougher position. Crawford is also a really good baserunner.
I mean, I could see an argument for Crawford as the better player, but I can’t see an argument for it not being close.
was closer than i thought….i had soured on Beltre after he had the monster year, then signed in Seattle and had terrible 2005 season…2006-2008 weren’t too bad though…

I guess the only plausible argument I can see for it is that players who the Red Sox and Yankees decide they absolutely have to have are simply more valuable.
:/
Rooting for Jose Casilla to take his K- and GB-inducing skills to the majors and join his brother.
I guess that should be “players whom”.
And rethinking it, that interpretation seems to be the only valid way to look at it; contextual value is really only a function of what the market will bear.

Not to mention we already have a Vlad for 1 million.
Pat Burrell.
Podsednik? We have too many outfielders as it is. Torres, Ross, Rowand, Derosa, Schierholtz, Huff, belt(maybe). Lets add another mediocre one!
It sounds like he made these before any deals were done.

In other words
Giants should do the opposite.
Still the father of two-time Cy Young Award winner Tim Lincecum.

I'll repost this here I guess
Philips is wonderfully hilarious here. Let’s count down the wrong:
Steve, the Giants went 92-70 last year, not 90-72. This is embarrassing for you, since it’s so easy to find out that you’re wrong.
Also, the Giants’ starters won-loss record being close to .500 means jack shit. I thought the recent Cy Young votes might have indicated the media is finally realizing wins are a bullshit stat, but I forgot, you’re Steve Phillips. And the Giants may have put pressure on the pitching staff with a lot of close games, but I think that they proved not only could they handle it, but that’s where we should be putting pressure because they are the team’s greatest strength.
Last year, the Giants weren’t a bad offensive team, despite what you may think. They were ninth in the majors in offensive WAR, which I promise has nothing to do with the military. It’s baseball. Also, your assertion that they were a good power-hitting team which finished in the middle of the pack of the NL in runs scored but aren’t good offensively because they didn’t steal enough bases is downright stupid. If they’re scoring runs, who cares how they are doing it? A balanced offense is nice, but I’ll take a productive offense myself. They can’t "manufacture" runs except for that whole "everybody in the lineup is capable of parking one" bit.
While your impression of Sabean’s pitch to ownership is fairly good, you could make the voice a little deeper.
Mark DeRosa is going to back in 2011, but if you’re counting on him to do anything in the middle of the lineup, you’re screwed. Luckily, the Giants aren’t doing that, because you’re not the GM, which is pretty nice. DeRosa is going to be a utility guy, not a central offensive presence, which will prevent the offense from imploding when he hurts his wrist again.
You did aptly identify a full season of Ross as an asset. Good on you.
Of course, being right didn’t last long, and now you’re saying that Posey is the guy we’re going to rely on to drive in runs, which he apparently can’t handle. First, hell yes he can, he’s Buster Mother Fucking Posey. Second, Aubrey Huff, Pat Burrell, Ross, and hopefully Pablo Sandoval will be helping him out. Torres’ speed and OBP will make things easier, as will Sanchez’s high average and decent on-base skills. Posey is going to be a great middle of the order presence, but we’re not shouldering him with the entire offensive burden. Hell, we’ll probably be expecting more of Huff.
Ah, a "sign Beltre" idea. Great. Do you want to pay for it? Because the Giants can’t. They’re out of money at this point, and if they had enough to grab Beltre, going after Crawford would have been a better idea. And yeah, there’s no reason to think Sandoval might be better than he was in 2010, except for 2009. Better push him into a utility role now and just ignore that fabulous season he had a couple years ago that had every Giants fan penciling him into the #3 spot for the next six years. God knows one disappointing season is enough to write off a young multi-talented potential All-Star under team control for four more years who plays 3B on a team that needs one. The backup C idea is even better; he was having defensive issues at third, I’m sure giving him a break by putting him behind the plate will help. Oh, and with Huff, Ishikawa, and Belt in the minors he should really spend a lot of time at first.
Oh my God. Vlad Guerrero? Do you think it’s 2002? Jose Guillen’s defense was bad enough, but Jesus Christ man. The Giants have one of the biggest outfields in baseball, and you want to stick him out there? Are you insane? High? Diseased? Demented? Thinking like Steve Phillips? After that suggestion, Scott Podsednik actually sounds reasonable. Hell, we’ve only got like seven outfielders right now, and that 40 man roster thing is extended for the full season if you win the World Series the year before, right? That’s how bad your Guerrero idea is: it makes Scott Podsednik look like a good idea.
Wow. I agree, Sabean should pitch that, because then we’d get a shiny new GM and he could be our scouting director.
Ain't no Posey like a Buster Posey cause a Buster Posey don't stop...hitting.

Also wrecked.
I didn’t actually listen/watch but this sounds about right.
"Today, it's as if McCovey's line drive finally went through. And the earthquake didn't happen. And Spiezio struck out. And Snow was safe."
I watched it
and Quincy actually went easy on Steve Phillips. Phillips somehow missed the way the Giants are built and thought that the Giants need to be put together like the standard teams.
"It's too LATE to stop now!" - John Lee Hooker
The best way to put a team together is to make it as good as possible throughout the roster. It’s silly to think that just because their pitching is their strength that they don’t need to improve their offense which could lift them from strong to dominant.
Last September the Giants pitching put up one of the greatest months in the history of baseball, and the team went 18-8 lifting them to the title. But look at their 8 losses that month: 2-4, 1-3, 0-1, 0-1, 0-3, 1-2, 0-2, 9-10 ($%$^ Colorado).
A decent functioning offense could have made things a lot easier on that team (as we happily saw in the post-Atlanta portion of the post-season).
MY DAD WAS WRONG!
Sure, -in an ideal world with lots of money
Lemme me know when the Giants have that.
"It's too LATE to stop now!" - John Lee Hooker
I don’t really get that argument. How much did they add in payroll for this season?
That still doesn’t change the fact that while the offense came through in the playoffs, there were many games where the offense didn’t show up. At one point in the season (I know it was early on) Sanchez gave up 4 hits to the Padres in two games and lost them both. The run averages seemed to be a bit misleading, mainly being padded by a few blow outs.

Great stuff
I nominate you to take over for Phillips and write the remaining team reports in his “Fixing the …” series. Even if you did absolutely no research on the teams I believe that you could fake it much better than Phiilips.
I do have 1 disagreement with you, though.
DeRosa is going to be a utility guy, not a central offensive presence, which will prevent the offense from imploding when he hurts his wrist again.
If Panda doesn’t come around in ST, then I can easily see DeRosa being named the starting 3B. We all know how Bochy’s initial decisions almost always favor the veterans. Even if Panda does play a lot at 3B, I think that DeRosa will likely see a bunch of starts there and at 2B. I just don’t trust Franchez to stay healthy for a whole season from here on out until he retires.

Even if he starts, Derosa is unlikely to be a ‘central offensive presence’.

I’ve heard him on the radio a lot in NY, and he’s pretty entertaining with a good sense of humor. That’s why he keeps getting a job. Actual knowledge is secondary, if important at all. Sad to say, but they’re probably right. It’s about ratings. An actual show with real experts tossing out numbers for hours would probably bore the masses.

You're right
I grew up around NYC and listened to the WFAN as a kid every day…I still remember Phillips getting crucified when he was with the Mets and I always kinda felt bad for the guy, because he seemed like a nice guy…I find it funny that to this day, most Mets’ fans who I keep up with or hear, still blame Phillips for the disaster that was Zambrano for Kazmir. I have heard him go on radio and say “FOR THE LAST TIME, THAT WAS NOT ME!!!”
You’re right about ratings over knowledge as well. That is the way it works. Mike Francesa would be another fine example of that policy at WFAN.
I mean, the real reason he is probably on MLB Fanhouse is to boost traffic. His controversy with his intern makes him a polarizing figure and those are always good for ratings or webhits or what-have-you…
It’s just that his little video was so dumb on so many levels that I had spit some venom…

By signing Beltre, I think you’d be practically giving up on Pablo Sandoval. By putting him behind possibly Beltre, Huff, Ishi, and possibly Belt is frustrating considering that 1 season ago this guy was a NL MVP candidate. While Posednik is a good 5th OF option considering his SB ability and historically decent ability to get on base, there’s no room in an already crowded OF unless we do the improbable and trade Rownads contract. I don’t even want to touch the idea of starting Vlad in RF. I think we’d be calling for his head after the first week of the season. Listening to this actually makes me happy we have Sabean.
