1988-1989 Baseball's 100 Hottest Rookies: a glimpse at prospects past
My mother recently cleaned out her basement, and found a bunch of my old baseball books and paraphernalia. One that particularly caught my eye is this book:
Therein you can find THE FUTURE OF THE SAN FRANCISCO GIANTS!!!! Such as:
Charlie Hayes! (Total WAR as a Giant: 0.4. He did get us one-third of Steve Bedrosian, though)
The one guy who was pretty good for us:
Kirt Manwaring! (Total WAR as a Giant: 9.2; then he was traded for Rick Wilkins)
Trevor Wilson! (4.5 WAR for the Giants - spread across seven seasons, 1988-1995)
There are some other future Giants in here, too. One is a personal favorite of mine:
Mark Carreon! (WAR for the Giants: 3.1; before Aubrey Huff, that was good enough to make him the second best Giants first baseman post-Will Clark)
Darryl Hamilton! (3.8 WAR for the Giants, then got us Ellis Burks)
Damon Berryhill! (who I randomly remember was one of xanthan's favorite backup catchers in an article he once wrote for his spamblog)
And, finally, the piece de resistance:
INEXPLICABLY RIGHT HANDED AND VERY BLUE RANDY JOHNSON!
This is all fairly pointless, though I wish the quality was better so y'all could read the text, but I got a kick out of it and I hope you do too.

Bonus points to anyone who can name the four guys on the cover whose faces aren’t covered up.

Adopted Giant: Kaohi Downing, your next dominant reliever 1.47 ERA in S-K, with 34 K in 42 IP. Uh, just ignore his age and the walks, please!
Walt Weiss, Chris Sabo, Damon Berryhill
and some jackass that played for the Dodgers.

Neat
I only know Weiss and Sabo from the cover.
Kruk: "and the Giants, the San Francisco Giants…"
Kuip: "They got one…"
Kruk: "World Champs."

Trevor Wilson would have had a really nice career for the Giants if he didn’t keep getting hurt. I still remember that weird grin he’d have on his face when he looked in for the catcher’s sign. He swore it wasn’t a smile, but it would piss off the other team anyway.
Buster Posey: Let's enjoy him before he goes to the Yankees because he wants to win the World Series. Wait, what???

It always looked more like a grimace than a smile to me.

To me as well. it always looked like a strenuous grimace — one that would wear out his facial muscles.
I saw him nearly no-hit the Padres in the fog. I think Fred Lynn homered to break it up in the 8th or 9th. Could have that all wrong, though.
I’m pretty sure you’re actually combining two different games from the same year (and week, as a matter of fact). I watched the first on TV — this near no-hitter, when Wilson took a no-no into the 9th at SD before it was broken up by Mike Pagiarulo. I was in the RF pavillion for the second, which was Wilson’s very next start, just 5 days later — this near shutout, when Wilson threw 6.1 shutout innings before Lynn hit his HR in the 8th (though it was actually off Jeff Brantley, who had relieved Wilson).
It’s crazy how one much retrosheet can make you doubt your own memory — it’s proved me wrong a million little details over the years.

For a brief second, I read that as "Baseball's 100 Hottest Rockies"
Oops.
The thing is, it happened.
Weird, so did I.

yeah
Looking through the whole thing, there are a few more top-notch guys: Roberto Alomar, David Justice, Al Leiter, and Gary Sheffield.
And then, of course there are a lot of Torey Lovullos and Rob Duceys, too.

Lance Johnson was pretty excellent in his heyday.
Also, I’m surprised Matt Williams wasn’t in here, because he was officially a “rookie” until the ’89 season, when he played about half a year in the big leagues. I suppose he appeared in the one printed during the previous year.

this thread brings back memories…
i used to have about 500 of the 1987 Fleer Update Matt Williams rookie cards that i bought for about 20c each….sold later for about 50c ea…..on the other side also had about 5000 88D Tommy Gregg – that didn’t turn out too well…
