Any high level SS on the list?

co-dad w/AfDC of
Ishikawa, the Topps Rookie All Star Team's First baseman. Does he get a chance in 2010?

No

And this list has more than a few errors in it. For example, Rafael Cova of the Giants isn’t on the list (and he is eligible), but Brett Pill is. Pill was removed from the Giants 40 man roster several days ago and now has 7 days (?) to pass through waivers before he can be assigned to the Grizzlies or other Giant affiliate. While Pill may technically be eligible if he’s still with the Giants on Dec. 9th, any team that was thinking about drafting him in the Rule 5 draft thencan have him for free (they have to assume his miniscule salary) right now merely by claiming him on the waiver wire. In that way they would not have to pay the $50K Rule 5 claiming fee, and they wouldn’t have to keep him on their 25 man roster for the entire 2011 season.

I read somewhere Cova was released, and he’s probably been around long enough to be a minor league FA if he wasn’t.

Note the lack of a hyphen.

I haven’t seen any official word, and even if he’s eligible to be a FA that doesn’t mean that he’ll choose to go that way. If you remember, Jesus Guzman was also a minor FA after the end of the 2009 season, but he elected to stay with the Giants.

As far as I can tell this list isn’t even close to comprehensive. I’d bet it doesn’t have half of the players actually eligible for the draft. It just isn’t close to long enough, and looking at the Giants list, I’d say it doesn’t list 1/3 of our Rule 5 eligibe players.

A hot August weekday, before a small crowd, when the only thing at stake is the tissue-thin difference between a thing done well and a thing done ill. Insofar as the clutch hitter is not a sportswriter's myth, it is a vulgarity, like a writer who writes only for money.

I’m guessing the list isn’t including any players who are eligible to be minor league free agents, so it’s really pretty much just a list of about two-three years of worth of player acquisitions in the draft/international market.

No-but there are some worth taking as a plan B

In case we don’t make a trade for someone.

what is the status of Tyler Graham?

I saw him play a couple of times last year and he seemed to have some potential.

There’s been no official word or rumor that he’s been released, so we have to assume that the team still wants to keep him around. He is eligible for the Rule 5 draft, and I could see a 2nd-division, rebuilding team taking a shot on him as a 4th/5th outfielder next year. I doubt he gets picked, but he can play all 3 OF positions and would be a decent PH and great pinchrunner off the bench, so he wouldn’t be dead wood.

FWIW I'm going to be making a Rule 5 preview fanpost at some point

It will have (IMO) the top 25 prospects that would fit with the Giants

Also, Mills didn't crack my list

No one from Cleveland did

Wow

You actually found 25 guys from the list that you think could help the Giants? The only 2 guys that I see that could possibly fit in and help at the major league level next season are Brad Emaus (3B/2B) of the Blue Jays and Wynn Pelzer (RHP) of the O’s. We already have a bench and bullpen that are too crowded, and I don’t see anybody else that would be able to stick all year in SF unless Sabes swings a trade or 2 that clears out the bench and/or bullpen – and that ain’t likely to happen before the draft on Dec. 9th. I look forward to your analysis.

Realistically there only maybe 15 guys that would be worth the ST invite

And FWIW Emaus ranked 7th on my list and Pelzer ranked 15th.

I’ll try and post it tomorrow at around midnight, but I know this is probably gonna take me at least 90 minutes to write up

Actually after looking over this list

I think I’m bumping Emaus up to 2nd

the bench may seem crowded, but it still is real weak on backup middle infielders.
Rohlinger, Velez, Burriss—I love supporting my prospects but this is not enough.

Since he was in AA, can Mills be taken in the Minor League portion of the Rule 5 draft? If so, go for it and send him to Fresno.

by kaliber on Nov 27, 2010 8:38 AM PST reply actions

Nice thought, but it won’t work. Each team gets to shield more players (beyond those on the 40 man roster) during the minor league portion of the Rule 5 Draft: 38 players from their AAA roster, and 37 from their AA roster. Mills will almost certainly be one of the 37 AA players that the Indians choose to protect from the minor league portion of the draft.

OK. I never read up on how the Minor League portion worked, so thanks for the info.
