The San Francisco Giants have won the World Series, now in convenient link form.

The San Francisco Giants have still won the World Series, sources have confirmed. Here are some applicable links.

Star-divide

San Francisco Giants Fans Celebrate Their World Series Championship - Bay Bridge Banter - SB Nation Bay Area

I wonder what the YouTube clips would have looked like after Glaus's double in 2002.

SF Giants say title is for their teams of past

"I had to get out of here for a minute because I'm not used to getting emotional like this."

Willie Mays. I mean, come on.

SF Giants add 'champions' to storied legacy

"'It's been a long time,' someone said nearby. 'A long time?' (J.T.) Snow, said, incredulously. 'It's been never!'"

Not quite the same emotional heft as Willie Mays, but a very cool quote.

Sports Illustrated

In case you haven't seen it, the cover of the next Sports Illustrated is pretty cool.

Extra Baggs

"The Giants certainly can and should look to upgrade with a better two-way player in left field. I can think of one guy who matches that criteria, and yes, I’m told the Giants will entertain the notion of signing Carl Crawford."

Let the rosterbation begin! Fapfapfapfapfap. Maybe Crawford will help win the Giants win their first World Series title in San Francisco!

Wait, what?

YouTube - "Lights" - Giants fans sing along - World Series Game 2

I posted this in one of the overflow threads, but as weird as it seems, this was the first time I really thought the Giants would win the World Series. If Steve Perry is for us, who could be against us?

Even though I'm not the hugest Journey aficionado, I immediately started belting this out at the top of my lungs as soon as it came on. Now that I've seen the video, I realize that I wasn't the only one going goofy from the first note. Journey causes opposing bullpens to melt into puddles of Blassian wildness. Science.

Police give Barry Bonds a ticket as Giants celebrated their title - San Jose Mercury News

"Police in West Hollywood pulled Bonds over and ticketed him at around 10 p.m. for talking on his cell phone while driving, TMZ.com reported."

You think a San Francisco cop would have issued that ticket on Monday night? You move to Mordor, you deal with the orcs.

Want to see Giants victory parade? Take public transit, get there early - San Jose Mercury News

On September 30th, a co-worker asked me what the deal was with the Giants and the playoffs. Were they close to making it or something? On November 2nd, the same co-worker asked me if I was going to the parade too. It was then that I realized how much of a nonsense bog this parade was going to be, and that if I wanted to go, that I needed to leave before the end of Game Four.

BASEBALL; Look What Wind Blew Back: Baseball's Giants - New York Times

"National League club owners today soundly rejected a move of the San Francisco Giants to St. Petersburg, Fla., handing the Tampa Bay area its seventh setback in seven attempts to attract a major league baseball team. The owners, in a secret ballot that required 10 votes for approval, voted 9-4 against allowing Bob Lurie, the Giants' owner, to sell the team for $115 million to the Tampa Bay group, which would have moved the Giants to the Florida Suncoast Dome in time for next season."

Never forget.

Giants enter Manny race

"The Giants have entered the bidding for free-agent superstar Manny Ramirez, SI.com has confirmed. KPIX-TV reported Friday that the Giants have made a three-year offer with an option for a fourth year."

Retro lulz.

Ryan Sadowski congratulates the Giants

I don't know why this is one of my favorite links of the bunch, but it is. So earnest. So awesome. I'll just leave this here.

I believe baseball programs are allowed up to 9 or 10 full scholarships. Granted, those are probably your best players, but there would still be some talent left.

I dunno

the three main starters and the catcher are the guts of the returning operation, and I have to believe they will all go very very quickly. Maybe they’ll want to stay for school, but I suspect they have preference to come back to finish school as part of the deal and would only have gone through junior year.

depending on the store list at any time (high rent means high turnover), it can be an easy place to go for stuff. They’ve made more of an effort to increase foot traffic with stuff like banks too, and that’s seemed to help in the bad economy.

And a line to the Champs store in the other wing. I went to the Embarcadero center and saw the line out into the street and down the block. I went back to the ballpark.. The line was by then across the Drawbridge.

by pwoper on Nov 3, 2010 1:14 AM PDT up reply actions

Excellent

A creative angle and a great way of expressing it. Well done, as always.

One thing the end reminded me of is how Buck’s call describes the win in terms of “for the first time since 1954” while Kuiper’s call (like jct’s video) mentions the 52 years of waiting in San Francisco. It wasn’t just Buck, either, it seemed like a lot of the national coverage focused more on the “first in a really long time” aspect more than the “first time since they moved to SF” aspect. Not that the latter is lost on people, it just shows a different perspective on which part is more important, I think.

Then the fucking Giants Twitter asked me what I wanted to say if I was asked in later years if I went to the first Giants championship parade in san Francisco.

Now I have to find a way to secure a spot on the sidewalk … without sitting or lie-ing. Hoist on me own petard!

by shanghaijim on Nov 3, 2010 7:57 AM PDT up reply actions

Aw, man

You’ve got to go after that. Sure, there’s a good chance that fighting the crowd for a good view of dudes waving while people behind you loudly ask “That’s Wilson, right?! WIIIIIILSOOOOON!” as soon as the first bearded player passes by might not be the best way to celebrate this amazing season but come on. You could tell your kid that Santa Claus will be at the parade and then point out Sabean.

by Seasick fish on Nov 3, 2010 1:13 AM PDT up reply actions

True enough. I can deal with crowds enough to go to a concert. I was 50 feet away from Body Count back in the day, as sweaty detention vets tried to upend me. But something about the sardine can really tweaks me when I’m in charge of a two-year-old. She’ll run around, screaming “Go Giants!” like she always does, and I’ll watch the parade in my underwear, completely satisfied in the knowledge that my mom will be at the parade.

Besides, I’ll go next year.

by Grant Brisbee on Nov 3, 2010 1:19 AM PDT up reply actions

Maybe the parade itself ain't so important

More than the parade, maybe what was most important was just celebrating the great occasion in the best way possible. And while a parade of thousands fits the bill for some, a bit of reflection at home with someone you love dearly sounds like a pretty damn good way to celebrate to me.

by Seasick fish on Nov 3, 2010 1:29 AM PDT up reply actions

I think it was DrDc

Who said something pretty smart about Crawford. His main value is in his defense and speed, and because he’ll be getting a long term deal, that’s the first thing that’s going to decline as he ages so there goes a lot of his value. Werth please.

Actually I believe there’s been some research done saying that speed guys age better than other folks. Give equivalent contracts, I’d rather have Crawford, but I’m guessing Werth will be cheaper. (Or the Yankees could go crazy and pay for both of them; it’s definitely a possibility if they don’t get Lee.)

Werth is a superior player, just a bit older.

If we don't get Werth

I’d like to see Belt on the opening day lineup. No offense to Cody, but Belt will probably be better.

Torres CF
Sanchez 2B
Huff RF
Posey C
Burrell LF
Uribe SS
Belt 1B
Sandoval 3B

If you don’t want Pat the Bat back, then you shift Aubrey to LF and put Cody in right. You can also change Uribe to the SS of your choice.

Basically, even assuming that UZR is actually an accurate measure of something, Burrell is at least one team win better than Ross, which is a great lot for one player. And I don’t necessarily make that assumption, either, which would make the difference even bigger.

Cody's three-year sample (my favorite method)

08-10: .267/.320/.456

Yeah, I’d like to see Belt given a shot to beat that.

Cody can still get starts as often as he wants – a Burrell/Torres/Huff outfield would be all over 30 and would require spot starts at all 3 positions.

It really depends on how much Cody want v. what Burrell want

Burrell will be 35 and I wonder if he hit the wall at the end of the year

Cody is younger and plays better defense…I would give Cody about $5 million and Burrell $2-3 million

Also, I wouldn’t be surprised if that got into the Rangers’ heads a bit. That whole thing was pretty inspiring.

I left my heart...

In the many threads since THE SAN FRANCISCO GIANTS WON THE WORLD SERIES, I’ve always been a few hours behind the Internet celebrating and goings on. I never really posted a general celebration/appreciation post because of that, so I guess I’ll put one o’ those here, if you’ll indulge me. I’ll try to be brief:

Hooray!

Well, maybe not quite that brief.

It was only a few years ago that I moved to San Francisco and discovered the strange joys of baseball, so I can’t claim to be a long-suffering fan like so many here. I’ve only had the tortuous pleasure of passionately following this team for a few years, so I suppose this win can’t mean as much to me as it does to most of you. And when I think about how crazily happy watching this season made a relatively recent convert like me, it is hard to imagine the joy those who’ve watched the team for decades must have felt. I feel like I get some appreciation for that feeling from reading great stories here and from talking to fans on the street or at the park, but maybe it’s a feeling best left unsubscribed. Perhaps it’s better to let the countless faces of the overjoyed from Monday night speak for themselves.

It’s looking like I will have to move away from San Francisco soon. It means so much to me that I got to be a part of this season before leaving. I’ll leave with a new appreciation for the team, the city, and the song that caps off wonderful games at the most beautiful baseball park in the world.

When I was a child Ken Henderson was my favorite player and he batted .313 in the '71 NLCS while the Giants lost in 4 to the Pirates.

I cried like a baby after that series, but I’m smiling now. I hope Ken is smiling too.

Question

I been finding the Orange Giants world series jersey going for cheap on ebay, im guessing later on they will be cheaper at other places compared to the the away and home jersey due to the fact they never wore it in the series should I still get it?

So I don't have a signature well these words would do! Who knew that upgrades can have downgrades too!

there are a lot of fake jerseys on ebay. I didn’t read that link, but be comfortable with getting something you don’t expect if you do buy it.

If it’s a “store” I think you have a better chance. And occasionally fake jerseys (I got some excellent int’l hockey jerseys) can be very well-made.

Congratulations from a Braves fan

I’m a Braves fan and I just wanted to congratulate you guys on the Giants win. There’s just a little of the “If only we had beaten the Giants, we would be World Series champs now!” nonsense on the Braves blog side of things. Honestly, we had no hope against Philly. We were their bitch at the end of the season. Anytime a team other than the Yankees wins I think it’s a great season for MLB. And you all had waited a very long time for another championship. You deserved it. I enjoyed seeing Renteiria do well. He played well as a Brave and is a good guy.

(NR) Edgar Renteria
Giants
Edgar Renteria does his best 1997 Edgar Renteria impression and comes up with a game-changing hit to help seal the series. Batting .412 and hitting two homers over five games? That’ll get you a World Series MVP nod every time.

2
(NR) Tim Lincecum
Giants
Tim Lincecum was brilliant in Game 5 — throwing eight innings while striking out 10 and allowing only one run. Outdueling Cliff Lee twice to bring home a World Series title is pretty powerful in our book.

3
(NR) Matt Cain
Giants
We could do without another “Cain is able” pun, but there’s no denying the Giants right-hander had a good week, pitching seven shutout innings against the Rangers to seize a crucial Game 2 victory.

4
(NR) Madison Bumgarner
Giants
He might be a rookie, but he sure didn’t play like one Sunday night. Taking down the Rangers’ lineup one by one, the Giants hurler gave up zero runs and struck out six to bring San Fran one game away from World Series glory.
