Live Chat - Belt, Ackley, & Harper in the AFL Title Game
The title game for the AZ Fall League will begin tomorrow (Saturday) at Noon PST. The game will be broadcast live on the MLB network, and streamed live on mlb.com, with the pregame starting at 11:45 am.
The Scottsdale Scorpions (comprised of prospects from SF, Arizona, Colorado, Baltimore, and Washington will be hosting the Peoria Javelinas (composed of prospects from Boston, Cleveland, Houston, Seattle, and Toronto). Both teams won 20 games in the regular season, but Scottsdale lost 12 while Peoria only lost 10. The game will feature the top 2 offenses and pitching staffs in the league (Peoria #1 offense & Scottsdale #1 pitching), so it could be a slugfest or a pitching duel.
Here's a 5 minute video clip and brief writeup from mlb.com's Jonathan Mayo previewing the game:
http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20101117&content_id=16139126&vkey=news_mlb&c_id=mlb
The game features intriguing individual matchups, with most of the top prospects and statistical leaders in the league populating the rosters of both teams. Scottsdale's stellar play has been fueled mainly by the 7 Giants on the team:
Brandon Belt, Charlie Culberson, Conor Gillaspie, Ryan Verdugo, Dan Runzler, Joe Paterson, and Jason Stofel.
With Gillaspie leading the league in HRs (5), Belt leading in triples (5), Culberson leading in doubles (11), and Verdugo coming in 2nd in strikeouts (26 - the leader had 27). As an added hype and bonus, since the game will be held on a Saturday, 18 year old mega-phenom Bryce Harper will be starting in RF for the Scorpions (Harper is on the taxi squad and can only play in games on Wednesday and Saturday).
Not to be outdone, the Javelinas lineup will include budding stars like Dustin Ackley (led league in AVG, SLG, OPS, and BB), Jason Kipnis (the league's hottest hitter over the last 10 days), and Jose Iglesias (BoSox defensive whiz @ SS).
Scottsdale will likely start LHP Sammy Solis of the Nationals, but Runzler, Paterson, and Verdugo are all well-rested and likely to be called on to pitch after Solis goes no more than 4 innings (all pitchers are on a pitch count).
25 year old Blue Jay prospect Marc Rzepczynski of the Javelinas was the top starting pitcher in the league, and may start the game for Peoria, although he did throw 5 innings on Tuesday, so I kind of doubt it. Ex-Giant Scott Barnes (traded to Cleveland for Ryan Garko) was Peoria's 2nd best starter, but he pitched 4 innings on Thursday, so he's not available. That probably means that Boston's Casey Kelly or Eammon Portice, or Houston's Kyle Greenwalt will start for Peoria.
I will be watching the game live on my computer. If anybody wants to live chat the game like we did during the Rising Stars All Star Game then we can either use this post as the meeting place, or somebody can start a new post on Saturday morning around 11:30 am. The link to the live stream isn't posted yet, but it should be found at the following page sometime on Saturday morning.

Harper
Mayo spoke to someone on the team today and said Burgess will get the starting nod in RF, but he also said Harper will get playing time, either DH or splitting the game.
I’m betting that Harper starts at DH at a minimum. Besides the entertainment value, he’s been one of their top 4 hitters in the games that he’s been able to play.
Also, it appears that Rzepczynski (try saying that 3 times real fast) has left the team for personal reasons, but there’s no word on if he’ll be back in Scottsdale by Saturday.

Starting lineups
It’s Lombardozzi, Culberson, and Belt leading off for Scottsdale, while Gillaspie (I have a feeling he’s going to have a good game) is playing 3B and batting 8th. Bryce Harper is starting in RF and batting 7th.
For Peoria it’s Phelps, Iglesias, and Ackley leading off, with Jason Kipnis batting 7th in the DH role.

I don’t know about you guys, but looking at the lineup I feel that Scottsdale has the edge. It hurts Peoria that their 2 top starters (Rzepczynski and Barnes) are not available. I also think that Scottsdale has the more balanced offense.

good throw by gillaspie to culbie, culbie just didn’t get enough on the throw and one-hopped it to belt, who tried to backhand it.

Gillespie gave a nice feed, and Charlie had time to make a good throw. He threw it in the dirt though, and Belt stayed sideways and tried to backhand-pick the ball.

Culbie’s in a big slump. A ton of K’s in his last 6 games. I can see a big difference just from the Rising Stars game a few weeks back. He’s lunging at everything now, while a few weeks back he was quiet in the box and letting the ball get in deep before swinging.

On that replay of Harper driving in the run in the 2nd inning the Scottsdale runner that scored tried to do a low-five with Gillaspie after crossing the plate and Conor just ignored him. I wonder if it is true that he’s a jerk?

Gillaspie has changed his stance again. He was starting his pre-pitch stance with an extreme open stance a la Cody Ross just a few weeks ago.
On a different note, these announcers are clueless. They’ve now referred to Culbie as a SS, but he hasn’t played any more that a couple of games a SS in the last 3 years. Culbie moved to 2B from 3B. And they said that Gillaspie could play LF, and that he only hit 9 HRs in AA. If they did their homework they would note that the EL is a notorious pitcher’s league, and Richmond suppresses power very severely.

I was very impressed with Paterson in that inning – he got 5 outs that inning. I could see him taking over Lopez’s role in the pen in the future. Why are the Giants leaving him exposed in the Rule 5 – especially since they’re using up one of their spots in the AFL on him?

One more thing about Culbie. A few weeks ago he would start his AB by putting the head of the bat all of the way behind his back, then bring his hands down to his chest and leave the bat in a vertical position before swinging. Today he’s raising his hands back to his shoulder and the back behind him when the pitcher throws the ball. It puts a huge hitch in his swing. That’s why he’s slumping.

"Today, it's as if McCovey's line drive finally went through. And the earthquake didn't happen. And Spiezio struck out. And Snow was safe."
Will we see Stoffel or Verdugo? They’re the only Giants that haven’t gotten in yet.

"Today, it's as if McCovey's line drive finally went through. And the earthquake didn't happen. And Spiezio struck out. And Snow was safe."
Harper actually projecting that he’ll debut in the majors at the age of 19 with only 1 full season of minor league ball? I have no problems with being confident, just that he doesn’t need to be vocalizing it.

Confidence was turning into arrogance mighty quick there….

Harper’s never failed since he was 14. He needs a large dose of fail to settle him down.

It’ll happen to Harper too.
