On Giants 1B Brandon Belt: "You can have Brett Harper. Give me that kid. He's got a chance to be Larry Walker. Athletic. Powerful. Good defender. And he hits the ball line-to-line with thunder."

Neat.

That “sharp scouting mind” just called one of the most hyped prospects in recent history by the wrong name.

Clearly

you are the scout.

Adopted papa of Rafael Rodriguez and fond rememberer of our 2008 opening day shortstop.

Bret Harper is a mediocre old first base prospect who must be in his mid 30s by now.

BRYCE Harper is who I think he’s referring to.

Or it could be Stark’s mistake in transcribing the quote.

I certainly hope so, and I’m guessing that’s probably what happened. I just love irony.

BRYCE HARPER CHANGES NAME TO BRETT.

Hazing in MLB to blame?

BRENTON BELT IS GOING TO BE GREAT!

Honestly, I’d say mistaking Bret for Bryce is the least egregious of the many fails in that comment.

A hot August weekday, before a small crowd, when the only thing at stake is the tissue-thin difference between a thing done well and a thing done ill. Insofar as the clutch hitter is not a sportswriter's myth, it is a vulgarity, like a writer who writes only for money.

I read it as a joke, along the lines of “bryce who?”

Beginning to worry

Belt faced a ton of skepticism coming into the year. Then he started killing the ball. Then he got more skepticism: it’s the Cal league, track record, etc. Then he kept killing the ball. Then he was promoted to AA. Then he still got more skepticism. Then he kept raking throughout the season, put up phenominal numbers and kept raking in the AFL.

Now, all of a sudden, it’s, OMG, HE’S TEH BEST! BETTER THAN BRYCE HARPER!! AHHHHHHHHH!!

This is definitely one aspect of prospect watching that drives me crazy. And it worries me for his sake because now the hype machine is setting him up to fail if he doesn’t produce like Adrian Gonzalez.

Hector Sanchez: Underrated. Fighting body bias since the 2009 off season. I still love you, son, even if you're fat.

Adrian Gonzalez!?! That would be a huge disappointment. If he isn’t giving Pujols a run for his money in the MVP race next year, I will be crushed.

By this time next year, if he isn’t already in the Hall of Fame, it will be a massive disappointment.

I’m banking on two homers in his first major league at-bat.

one of them had better be a grand slam. the other should be against the dodgers.
