Lowering the Quality of Internet Discourse Since 1985™

Funny

Yesterday some prognosticator said he expected the announcement to be that Apple was going to start a subscription streaming music service that would make the current mp3 download model completely irrelevant.

In that context, this is a pretty underwhelming development. “You mean now I can get all my favorite Beatles songs in poor sound quality! Sign me up!”

How much of the post-game celebration does it contain?

Fuck Armageddon, this is hell.

Slow network here

I’ll let you know when the download is finished.

For what it’s worth, their NLDS Game 4 download has the postgame interviews with Ross and Bumgarner and a couple of minutes of clubhouse madness. But their NLCS Game 6 download is a little less generous with the postgame stuff, with postgame interviews with Huff and Burrell and about a minute of the Giants on the way to the clubhouse.

Their World Series Game 5 download has about 20 minutes of postgame stuff — onfield interviews with Ross and Posey, the presentation of the trophy and the MVP award, multiple replays of the last out and ensuing ballyhoo, a series of clubhouse interviews, and a wee bit of clubhouse nonsense.

When Venable swings and misses and the 2010 Padres are retired

there’s only 50 seconds left to go. Posey runs out to the mound, there are hugs all around in the dugout, a celebration begins in the infield. Bochy and the coaching staff come out onto the field and wave their caps. The crowd is jubilant. The end.

You know, not to be all “woe is us/east coast bias” here, but out of 74 regular season games that they’re offering as the Games of the Year, 2010, they chose a total of 2 victories for the eventual champs — and one of those was obligatory as they have all the post-season clinching victories. So out of the rest of the Giants 91 victories they found 1 worthy of highlighting. They actually have more Giants losses (3) available than victories. That kind of sucks.

The Yankees have 14 games available including 11 victories. 11! That kind of sucks, too.

A hot August weekday, before a small crowd, when the only thing at stake is the tissue-thin difference between a thing done well and a thing done ill. Insofar as the clutch hitter is not a sportswriter's myth, it is a vulgarity, like a writer who writes only for money.

Late inning come-from-behind games

get a lot of play there. All 3 of the Giants’ losses on iTunes are of that variety — Ramirez’ home run off of Romo, Werth’s 9th-inning dunker off Wilson, and Tulo’s 5 RBI game in Denver are all there. The one victory other than the clincher is that sort of game too, featuring Mattingly’s serial visits to the mound.

If only they’d held onto the lead after coming back against the Reds, I’d suppose that that one would surely have been included.

Overall, the “other guys’” games seem to need some kind of “hook” to be selected, a milestone home run, a big comeback, a no-hitter. It’s not a balanced look at what keeps people tuning in day after day. But note that it’s MLB.com that decides what to make available.

I’m actually flabergasted that the Reds game wasn’t there. Two playoff teams, a 10 run comeback, a 9th inning re-comeback, and an extra inning win? Seems like there’s a hook in there somewhere if they tried to think of it real hard.

Also of note, it’s not like this season for the Giants DIDN’T feature a few late inning come from behind dinger games that could have dug up.

Don't worry

They’ll just add another round of playoffs to make it more fair.

by 2X2L on Nov 16, 2010 12:25 PM PST up reply actions

Yes, because they’re seemingly incapable of realizing that the two things they say that they want (more cities in the playoff hunt and the race for 1st place to be meaningful) are antithetical and can’t be reconciled. Nor apparently can they see that for every race they “fix” there are 3 others races that get ruined (as for instance, if they could manage to make the Yankees/Rays race better by adding another team they would simultaneously drain the Giants/Pads/Braves race of its drama).

Yankees fans are the only people dumb enough to pay 2 bucks to download a 4 day old game that they already know the score of.

And me. Dammit, baseball addiction. This winter is like withdrawal.

4 hours later

Still downloading. Apple/MLB obviously underestimated worldwide demand for this game.

My adopted Giant got shipped off to Pittsburgh, and it was worth it.

Really? My finished downloading hours ago.

I wrote an absolutely scathing review of the service on the page. That’ll show them!
