xbox sports games (nfl/mlb)

Boy that looks like a spam title.

So, I got an xbox 360 my first console since... since... wow, ever.  When I was a kid I had a vic-20 and c-64 instead of an atari 2600 etc.  Always played PC games since then.

So I would like to pick up a couple sports games - one baseball, one foot ball.   I understand vaguely that the latest titles are not always "the best".  Also, I am cheap so I am happy to pickup MLB 2K8 for $10 instead of the new one.

My parameters:  I like more realism, but not high level of console difficulty.  Also, I will be playing my 6-year-old who I guess is pretty average for a kid who just blitzed through his first console game (Clone Wars: Republic Heroes in a couple weeks).  I would also like a baseball game that has "Player upgrades" (or historical stats) available on line... although I suppose I will have to get an XBOX 360 live pay account for that.

Hmmm... I just realized that I might have to wait for MLB 2K12 to get Brian Wilson with a beard.

Sadly, your only choices are really MLB and Madden. MLB 2K10 was fun, I thought. 2K9 was awful, and I don’t remember 2K8 very well but I think it was pretty good but really hard to hit.

Madden is pretty dogshit, and has been for years now. That said, the newest Madden is the best of the bunch. I’d stay far, far away from Madden 09.

I love NCAA FOOTBALL

Understandably not for everyone but I would recommend the new Ncaa over new Madden everyday. The gameplay just doesn’t “flow” in Madden like it used to and there’s just something special with playing with college teams. Of course you don’t get the names on the roster so it’s best if you have xbox live and can download rosters that fans put out with the names already on it. I haven’t played a baseball game consistently since they ended the MVP series. John Dowd FTW!

The Madden series concentrated a lot on online gaming.

They stripped the franchise and career modes bare. Considering you have a fairly young kid, I don’t know how helpful online stuff is. For plain gameplay, NCAA is probably better.

MLB 10 The Show is really realistic. The stats preserved from year to year in Franchise mode are a little disappointing (only AVG, HR, RBI, SB), but the overall control you get is fantastic. The online is not great. The gameplay is easy to master and a lot of fun. It’s probably easier than 2K’s gameplay IMO. If you’re looking for a bargain, look to MLB 09 The Show, since it is basically the same game for half the price of its sequel.

I managed to completely ignore the XBOX thing.

MLB The Show is PlayStation exclusive. Sorry, I guess your only choice is 2K.

I've got MLB 2K10 for PC

Absolutely love it. It’s the first time I’ve ever played a real baseball game (previous experience was Mario Super Sluggers and Mario Superstar Baseball, which are great, but lack in the realism department). The My Player mode is a lot of fun and very addictive personally, though it’s got some issues. From everything I’ve heard, MLB 10 The Show is far superior, but stupid Playstation made that a stupid exclusive so you’re in the same boat as me. But really, MLB 2K10 isn’t a bad game at all, and as it’s the only MLB game outside of PS3, it’s a worthwhile purchase.

i didnt realize 2K10 came out for PC. I wish all sports games still did, but EA sports completely let that market go.

The Show is made by a Sony studio, so it’d pretty much have to be an exclusive.

They could stop being jerks and make some money though. I doubt many people buy a Playstation just to play the Show. And if they put it on the PC I’m sure they wouldn’t have that problem.

Every game should come out for PC I guess is my point.

Sadly at this point, the PC crowd is a shrinking market. It’s just not economically viable for them to release a PC version, which I’d love for them to do since I don’t own a PS3.

But I want them to...

Don’t they care about hurting my feelings and making me sad?

I have seen the future of Major League Baseball, and its name is Buster Posey.

MLB 2k10 is the only baseball game for 360 and it is awful. It’s great if you just need a quick baseball fix but if you’re looking for any depth you might be out of luck.

The online is terrible. It’s impossible to get used to the timing delay of hitting if you switch back and forth between the franchise mode. The worst part is that MLB 2k9 had no delay at all.

Franchise mode is fun but it’s lacking in a lot of parts. The pitching numbers are completely unrealistic. The best pitchers in the league often finish with an ERA of 4 or higher. At the begining of my latest Giants franchise I edited some player ratings to more accurately reflect how players were playing by the end of the season. Buster Posey ended up with a 91 overall rating but finished the season with like a .244 BA and 15 HRs. I think it has a lot to do with the stamina system. He was constantly at a 70, presumably because he is a catcher, which is the lowest it can be before that player is considered injured.

The trade system is annoying too. If you’re a buyer at the trade deadline you can’t trade a top prospect or two for an impact player. You have to trade a player of equal or greater value which negates the whole purpose. I do like the draft system however. Players are listed by their overall rating at the time of the draft but unlike previous years they’ve added a “potential” rating which allows you to find some gems in the later rounds, despite their poor ranking during the draft.

It’s hard to sign free agent superstars as well. Bad teams still find ways to re-sign superstars that would walk in real life (Read: Adrian Gonzales).

Overall it’s a good game I guess. I’m pretty hardcore when it comes to sports videogames so I think my expectations are always a little high. I’m a full time college student so if I’m not studying I’m probably gaming. But for someone that has a family and isn’t going to put a ton of hours into turning the Pirates into the next MLB dynasty, I think it’s worth a pickup.

yeah

I would estimate that I would not play more than 1-2 hr. /week. I would assume outright that any video game franchise mode is totally broken. Since there is no current real-world model for Baseball GMing, the video game one is going to be just stupid. It will either have mispriced free agents or stupid trades; probably both.

Yeah

I mean, it’s a good game for what is. Like I said, it’s pretty unrealistic to expect the computer to determine who should be buying/selling at the deadline or which teams shouldn’t resign certain free agents. I have (unrealistic) aspirations of running my own baseball team one day, so I really crave a game that is dead realistic and gives me complete control of my franchise. But for just satisfying a baseball craving it is worth a purchase. The prices of new sports games drop dramatically after the season and you almost can always buy a used one. I’d guess it’s between 20-25 dollars currently. Plus you’ll want to get this year’s version because it will have players like Bumgarner and Posey that weren’t available last year.
