Story of the 300 hitter

My brother-in-law can't believe that I don't believe in clutch and has been trying to convince me of clutchyness. His latest argument is this argument in the NYT about hitters who are hitting 299 or 300 in their last AB and how often they reach that mark. I find this study really bad as no variables are mentioned, most notably the scorer being more lenient on the last day and the talent of the pitcher.
