Hello, I have lived in New Jersey (now in Hopewell, NJ) all my life and have been a San Francisco Giant diehard fan since 1961. My father went to Florida in the 40’s to try out for the Giants at their minor league camp (I have the original letter requesting he attend, signed by Carl Hubbell, their Player Development Director at the time). He didn’t make the cut but that’s how I became a Giants fan later on, in 1961 when I was 10. My first baseball game was the Mets vs. Giants in the Polo Grounds in 1962. I have had the MLB Extra Innings package since it was made available via cable and watch a t least 120 games a year. I have always had a full time 8-5 job and, due to being on the east coast and with mostly night games in the National League West, I’m usually up until 1:00 or 2:00 most nights April - September. Over the past few years I have been an avid follower of the McCovey Chronicles but until this time I have not submitted any comments. I go to at least 1-2 games each year when the Giants play the Phillies those 3 times a year in Philly. (I actually like the Phillies but of course never when they face the Giants.) Currently I am still surrounded by Phillie, Met and Yankee fans who cannot understand how or why I am a Giants fan. I listen to Mad Dog Russo , who as most of you know, is a rabid Giants booster, first on WFAN and now satellite and he provides the little support I get being in this part of the country.
It’s been very tough since 1961 as you all know too well but I have stuck with them thru very little ‘thick’ and all of that overwhelming, gut wrenching, nightmarish ‘thin’ (Richardson, Robertson, earthquake, S. Torres, Baker/Ortiz 2002, Marlins, Finley, etc, etc.). I could have gone to the game at Citizens Bank on Saturday but preferred to watch at home with my 10 year old son so I did not have to contain my exuberance among those strange Phillie fans just in case the Giants won. Of course it was one of the greatest baseball games I’ve ever seen…
I wonder if there’s others out there who have had similar long time histories of being SF Giant fans but living far away from San Francisco. Please chime in.
I enjoy this Giant team more than any other Giant team. So… let’s just say…. after 49 years of being a SF Giants fan I’m ready…It’s time for this team to win this thing…Let’s go Giants.
