A decent idea, especially if you want to go for a 2-year deal. Just backload it like 4/6.5 so the big hit comes once Rowand’s contract is over after 2011.

I like Ross and I’d like to see him back next year. I like Huff and I’d like to see him back next year. I like Burrell and I’d like to see him back next year. I like Uribe and I’d like to see him back next year. The only problem I have with all of these is that none of these guys is likely to have a much better 2011 season than they had in 2010 and while a Torres-Sanchez-Huff-Posey-Burrell-Sandoval-Ross-Uribe lineup is loads better than what we were throwing out at the beginning of this season its still a lineup that is likely going to struggle to score runs pretty often. On the other hand I don’t think the odds of Sabean bringing in Werth or Crawford in addition to bringing most of those other guys back is very likely so I guess I should just be happy with something very similar the current lineup for all of next year.

I think the ideal would be to add a real SS, eventually promote Belt, and bring most of those guys back…
well, the REAL ideal would include Carl Crawford, but I’m not getting my hopes up (he’s practically already wearing pinstripes, IMO)

I actually don't see Crawford going to NY
I think he’s waiting to cash Arte Moreno’s check

I agree that the Yanks won’t go hard after Crawford. The BoSox also reportedly lust after Crawford, and the Tigers have a ton of salary that have come off their books and a huge need in the OF. The only reason that I see the Yanks getting into the Crawford bidding is if at the last minute they want to block Boston from signing him.

I see the Tigers getting Werth
and the Angels jumping on Crawford

A real SS would be nice. But the FA market for SS is absolutely terrible: so bad, in fact, that i’m not wincing at the idea of renteria being brought back as backup next year. I don’t like the idea…but its ugly out there.
I like your thinking
I’ve posted that trial balloon myself in previous threads. The Giants will either have to trade for a new SS, hope that Brandon Crawford flips a switch at the plate in ST, or be satisfied with Uribe again next year.

Doubt he gets non tendered

The difference between all those guys and Cody Ross? Ross is still under team control – we don’t have to compete with other teams for his services, and if we want him, he doesn’t have the choice of leaving.

Right
But what BS is inplying is that he will tender Ross a multi-year contract that takes him past his last arb season. Let’s hope that BS doens’t go all Rowand on us and sign Ross to a 3+ year deal at a huge increase in salary. Ross is a nice complementary player and 4th OF, but I wouldn’t want to rely on him as a starter for a whole season.

What?
He’s like a better version of Jose Cruz Jr. I’ll take that any day.

whoa
Does Ross play Cruz’s level of defense (outside of one play where I blacked out)? I haven’t seen that yet. Cruz was pretty nifty up til the playoffs for us.
Fate is inexorable
4th OF? The dude is a real starter. He’s an above average hitter by a bit, and an average CF/above average COF. That’s not a 4th OF.

He has extremely pronounced splits
and really is best suit as a platoon against LHP in RF and backup CF, so he plays 3 out of 5 days.
Obviously any links in the above post are probably NSFW

That’s what I meant when I wrote “4th outfielder” – let’s face it, Ross couldn’t even hold down his starting spot in the Marlins’ OF this year and they weren’t blessed with all star-caliber starters there, with the exception of Mike Stanton when he was finally promoted in July.

Why backup CF? And why do pronounced splits make him a worse player? He has a 109 career wRC+, and that’s not against a skewed distribution of R/L. How do you make the case a good fielding OF (average CF/good COF) and above average hitter is somehow not worthy of a starting spot?

I really hope
That Ross being tendered a contract didn’t depend on his postseason play. A perennial 20+ HR bat is worth $6M or so, and considering some people (MLBTR) were suggesting he might be non-tendered scares me as to the FO’s reasoning.
Ain't no Posey like a Buster Posey cause a Buster Posey don't stop...hitting.

NO!
4th outfielder at best.

Since he’s under team control/arb eligible, I don’t see why his postseason play should matter much.

It will
You don’t non-tender a guy so beloved now by the fans and the local media – that’s just bad business.

He shouldn’t be non-tendered regardless of his postseason play.

I think he should get a multi year deal
That buys out this last arb year. Something like 3 years, 16 million seems fair for both sides.
