Two games, two ridiculous squeeze jobs. These umpires are KILLING me.

Making calculations based upon statiscal histori-garbage rather than situation reality since 1980
Adopted Giant: Kaohi Downing, your next dominant reliever 1.47 ERA in S-K, with 34 K in 42 IP. Uh, just ignore his age and the walks, please!

also killing me: Werth’s gall in bitching and moaning about a called strike three that wasn’t even CLOSE to being a ball.

I think most people are not blaming the ump for the strikeout (it was a strike) but rather that it was the same pitch to Sanchez to walk in a run. Nice try though.

How does that change the fact that he threw a 3-2 pitch that should have been a strikeout to end the inning instead of a walk to score a run?

false dichotomy alert!

a) The offense is incompetant
b) The strike zone has been all over the place

These two things are not mutually exclusive. But don’t let that get in the way of your annoying one-liner schtick.

Most of his starts in August/September were one of the following:

or
7 ip, 3 walks, 0 or 1 earned runs

He was really good at pitching out of trouble, even when he didn’t have his stuff. That may or may not be sustainable.

Strike zone complaints are legitimate, but Oswalt is also pitching very well. This ain’t looking good.

Golden State Worriers: Angst & Analysis

by onlxn on Oct 17, 2010 6:26 PM PDT reply actions

Oswalt wouldn’t be pitching nearly as well if he wasn’t getting the huge zone.

In the end, America will be remembered for three things: the Bill of Rights, jazz, and baseball.

by cornball on Oct 17, 2010 6:28 PM PDT up reply actions

Yes, his pitch count is extra low because of a big zone. That doesn’t mean he hasn’t been executing. How many calls has he gotten — four, maybe five? And how many times has he been in count trouble against a batter?

Let’s not overstate the case. He’s cruising… umpiring is helping him, but it’s not nearly the biggest reason why.

Golden State Worriers: Angst & Analysis

by onlxn on Oct 17, 2010 6:30 PM PDT up reply actions

He hasn’t been executing! He’s missing the actual strike zone and is being rewarded for it. It’s way different pitching in a 1-2 count as opposed to 2-1.

In the end, America will be remembered for three things: the Bill of Rights, jazz, and baseball.

by cornball on Oct 17, 2010 6:31 PM PDT up reply actions

I’ll repeat: how many calls he has gotten?

Golden State Worriers: Angst & Analysis

by onlxn on Oct 17, 2010 6:32 PM PDT up reply actions

It’s not the volume of calls, it’s how the fact that any pitches out of the zone are being called strikes. It gives the pitcher the freedom to stay out of the zone and forces the hitter to really expand his zone.

In the end, America will be remembered for three things: the Bill of Rights, jazz, and baseball.

by cornball on Oct 17, 2010 6:33 PM PDT up reply actions

Yes, I understand that principle on a theoretical level. But I don’t see that effect as having had any real significance in this game. Can you point to an at-bat where a Giant has expanded his zone? I haven’t seen one yet.

Golden State Worriers: Angst & Analysis

by onlxn on Oct 17, 2010 6:35 PM PDT up reply actions

1-2 pitch to Freddy last AB

Wasn’t even close to the strike zone. Other side of the plate, yes, but still.

In the end, America will be remembered for three things: the Bill of Rights, jazz, and baseball.

by cornball on Oct 17, 2010 6:36 PM PDT up reply actions

Eh… I don’t think Freddy’s swing there was a conscious reaction to the umpiring, but I can’t prove it. You may be it.

Nevertheless, what’s the upshot of that? You’re saying that instead of allowing zero hits and one walk, Oswalt should have allowed one hit and two walks by now? And you’re contending that that’s not “executing”?

I don’t see it. Oswalt’s gotten some help; he’s also pitching well. Both things can be true.

Golden State Worriers: Angst & Analysis

by onlxn on Oct 17, 2010 6:38 PM PDT up reply actions

I guess we’ll just have to disagree on this, then.

I don’t talk about it a whole lot, but I’ve battled depression since I was 18. And some of it was likely triggered by the factors you mention. In the most recent wave, I denied there was a problem until it started negatively impacting my on-air performance and I was asked to take some time away from work. I started seeing a therapist, which helped me dramatically. I can’t stress enough how important it is not to deal with the problem alone. I’ll try to provide whatever support I can.

Good evening.

Your friendly Giants/Cardinals fan checking in, from the heart of Phillies country. My town is awash in Red and White, so I decided to have some fun today, walking down main street with my Giants cap on.

I’m a bit surprised I’m alive, despite the attempts of some vehicles that went roaring past, swerving slightly in my direction as they stuck their rapidly reddening, spittle producing faces out the window to scream obscenities at me.

Regardless, I’m home, with a six-pack of ice cold beer in front of me, with my feet propped up, watching the game. There appears to be a game of great significance going on, hopefully that stops in short order.

Go Giants, and happy viewing (with hopefully a side of no torture) to all.
