Q&A w/ Crashburn Alley (Giants-Phillies NLCS)
I talked with Bill Baer of Crashburn Alley and got to ask him a few questions regarding the Phillies. The Giants portion of the Q&A should be going up on CBA sometime today, too.

Ask me about my blog.
A Q&A with a Phillies blog. You’re so original! ;)
(But seriously, I need to find time to read BCB more often)
I will, I just get lazy sometimes and it takes me a while.

I also read his review of the starting rotation
The one thing he seems to discount, is how the staff really has been on a role since September. Lincecum, Sanchez and MadBum in particular have been sensational. Is the sample size too small or should how they’re currently pitching be taken into consideration when comparing the staffs?

Yes. Now, that doesn’t mean there’s no possibility for it to be a consideration. If you know something is different, or even have real good reason to think something is different (that will continue being different going forward), then you can look at it as sampling from two populations (before group at a lower talent level and after group at a higher talent level), but if you’re going strictly by the numbers, it is SSS and without any further knowledge, something you should chalk up to random variation.

Data that could serve as evidence that something really is different that I would suggest looking at include: velocity for pitchers, movement on their pitches, K and BB rates (those tend to stablize in a much smaller sample than overall performance and so you don’t need as big of a sample to say something is different), a difference in how they use their pitches (both in proportion of pitch thrown and in the situation it’s thrown in – like what count)….that’s what I can think of right now off the top of my head.

With Timmy, he said his mechanics were fouled up
Plus he’s now throwing that new shiny slider.
With Sanchez, it seems like a mental thing, like he;s calm and confident now…I know, that’s pretty “intangible”.
MadBum just keeps getting better

I think if those things are true, you might find them in some of the data I suggested. Like for instance, if Lincecum’s mechanics were off, we might see a dip in velocity, a change in movement, or a loss in control, or possibly some other byproduct….so the evidence could be there.
