Complete 2009 MLB Payroll Numbers
On December 22, 2209 the bizofbaseball.com posted the complete 2009 MLB payrolls. A look at the link provides no real surprises. The Giants moved from the seventeenth spot in 2008 to the fourteenth in 2009, an increase of 15.99%.
While it is difficult to obtain consistent numbers anywhere, this list contains signing bonuses, earned incentive bonuses, non-cash compensation, buyouts of unexercised options and cash transactions, and deferred salaries.
Two teams with lower payrolls than the Giants made the playoffs. The Minnesota Twins and the Rockies.

It needs to lose Sabean and Bork first.
Matt Cain: throwing complete game shutouts since 06'. No big deal.

I prefer to think of the Giants as an $85mil team with a reasonable contract to Barry Zito. On a related note, I don’t think payroll is what’s keeping the Giants out of the playoffs; management is what’s keeping us out of the playoffs. Give Sabean more money to work with, and he’d probably just sign a bunch more veterans who were good five years ago. With current management, limited payroll is probably the only thing that will allow younger players to get at-bats.
Osiris, Lord of the Dead, and... relief pitcher for the San Francisco Giants?

I wholeheartedly agree with this statement. I posted the link to generate some conversation. Thinking about Bork and Sabes just gets me depressed.

Matt Downs . The Kevin Frandsen of 2010 !
I agree that management is the main thing keeping the Giants out fo the playoffs, however, management decisions in the recent past have made the budget more of an issue. Until Zito and Rowand are gone, the Giants are the budgetary equivalent of the A’s.

A limited budget might be our only hope while those two are in charge.
