Where is the money going to come from?
After reading a few of the other FanShots about various free agent possibilities, I took a look at the 2010 contract situation for the Giants. First, a few assumptions:
- Contract values per Rotoworld's Contracts page. (Don't have access to Cot's at work).
- Posey starts at C with a TBD back up.
- I put DeRosa in LF and Sandoval at 3B, but that's obviously TBD. They could sign a 1B or OF.
- I assumed that Lewis, Schierholtz, Bowker and Velez make the team and Torres, Ishikawa and Frandsen do not. There are a lot of permutations here, but thankfully, they're all scheduled to make about the same amount, so the exact combination of players isn't really important from a financial perspective.
- I assumed arbitration awards of $12MM for Timmy and $3MM for Wilson and Sanchez, respectively.
- I put MadBum in the 5th starter spot.
- Much like the position players, there are a whole host of guys who could theoretically end up in the 'pen. Again, like the position players, most of those guys are scheduled to make about the same amount in 2010 (near minimum) so the combination isn't terribly important.

Looking at the breakdown above, that's $87.5MM with 1B (or 3b/OF, depending on your preference), backup catcher and a bullpen spot still to be filled. Given management's desire to keep payroll at or near 2009 levels (~$83MM), where does that money come from? Are they going to go back to the days of a low $90MM's payroll? Did I overestimate the arb awards for Timmy/Wilson/Sanchez? Is there something else I am missing/overestimating?
Also, Zito, Rowand, Renteria. Grrr.

There probably are a lot of towns worth less than $30.5 million.
Osiris, Lord of the Dead, and... relief pitcher for the San Francisco Giants?

LOLKLAND
Petey and Fresh always dunking on Spartans,
Biscuits in baskets from Heatley and Thornton,
Bam-Bam and Gore on the way to some rings,
These are a few of my favorite things.
I seriously thought that “paying a town” was just some phrase I had never heard.
Merkin Valdez? Manuel Mateo? A rose by any other name...
Me too. I was like, “A town… that is a lot!”
I don't know about that, to the groin.

I can totally see “paying a town” sticking.

Its like 17 Detroits.
Plotting the ultimate demise of Gore51 (never met him, I dunno he could be swell) so as to adopt Kyle Nicholson.

wow i can’t believe we’re paying Renteria $9 mil and we’re about to pay Uribe over $3 mil to be, apparently, a bench player

Additionally, I’ve also been wondering how well he (Uribe) would play SS defensively right now. He’s obviously put on weight since he played in Chicago, but his UZR scores indicate that he might be able to hand the position.
Some spam:
Food for thought: Uribe’s UZR scores at SS over the past 6 years.
2004: +4.5 (287.1 innings fielded)
2005: +7.1 (1293.1)
2006: +6.2 (1130)
2007: -2.2 (1305.1)
2008: +0.3 (15)
2009: -1.2 (318.2)
Uribe has no doubt gained some weight since his Chicago days (2005 version of Uribe vs. the 2009 version) and I’m not sure we can call him a +6-7 run defender at shortstop anymore. But, just how would his defense play at short? This post from Beyond the Boxscore has projected UZR scores for 2010 and Uribe projects (with an age-adjustment) as a -1 run defender at SS for the upcoming season. Even if we think that the -1 run projection is a little optimistic — and want to call Uribe something like a -3 run defender at SS — he would project as something like a 1.5 WAR player at SS given almost 550 PA’s playing time and assuming he hits a .320 wOBA.
To my eye, Uribe looked fine. He didn’t have Vizquel’s range, but he has a really nice arm and very sure hands. He also seems to really be in charge of the infield, which is something you want from a SS, whether it’s calling out defensive assginments or talking to the pitcher when he needs to catch his breath.

Reality: Sanchez AND Renteria will be sucky and hurt, and we’ll wish we had two Uribes.
Merkin Valdez? Manuel Mateo? A rose by any other name...
DeRosa is a much worse infielder than Uribe.

Sometimes I think about the amount of money that we’re paying for Zito and Rowand, and other times I think of the amount of money that we’re paying Renteria, Sanchez, Uribe, and DeRosa.
I don't know about that, to the groin.

Hahaha, i can’t help but laugh about how the giants pay Renteria… 6 million more for a guy that can’t produce ANYTHING, even a base hit would work, but Uribe does more while on the bench than Edgar does in the field
minimum salary for 2010 will be $400,000

Lincecum pitches - an 80% chance of winning.
Rowand bats – a 75% chance of fail.
And one gets to do it every day!
For the same money.

You know what’s really depressing? Projecting 2011. All the young pitchers will probably be getting raises, and the only salaries we’ll be shedding are Renteria’s and Affeldt’s. And chances are we’re still going to need a shortstop, a first baseman, and at least one corner outfielder.
HEAVY!

We’re going to trade for that mythical pre-arbitration “impact” hitter Sabean has been talking about 2004.

I think you are underestimating the arbitration awards to Lincecum & Wilson. Lincecum should be closer to $15M and Wilson should be over $4M.
Why isn't Sabean held accountable for leading the Giants into many years of mediocrity???
I don’t believe it will even exceed 10 million.

I'm betting on $8 million
BTW, when will the whole thing take place?

There was also speculation on MLB Trade Rumors that Timmy might get $1 more than Sabathia’s contract ($22M). I don’t believe it, but his award should be huge, since he’s accomplished something no one else in the history of baseball has done……win the Cy Young in his first 2 full seasons.
Why isn't Sabean held accountable for leading the Giants into many years of mediocrity???
ok GRM lite....
Aaron King is still my homeboy... iffy mechanics and all
McFAQ for all you newcomers out there.
GET THAT VORP AND WHIP SH!T OUTTA HERE!!!
Whomever Sabean signs this off-season will make a good platoon partner with Ryan Gark-ohh... nevermind...
If Posey starts then Whiteside will be the backup
There’s no need to sign a more expensive catcher to split time with Buster when Whiteside is a fine defensive one at the minimum salary. The 5th starter will likely be between Martinez, Bumgarner and possibly an AAA player.
Win the inning.
Posey will not be on the ML roster out of spring training.
I would look for someone like Torrealba or some other catcher on a 1 year deal to be signed.
Why isn't Sabean held accountable for leading the Giants into many years of mediocrity???

How bad will Zito be in the last couple of years of his contract?
I think I heard Urban suggest that Zito will age well because he does not rely on velocity. That seems to have been disproven by guys like Johnson and Clemens (albeit he had some help). Guys like Zito can barely afford to lose any velocity, so they are the ones that do not age well. Will he even be a 5th starter in 2012? And won’t his contract keep the Giants from ever being able to pair a slugger with Lincecum, unless it is either Posey or Neal?
This is why the Marlins model is so much better. They jut lower the payroll when they are rebuilding and then can raise it up when they are in position to win. The Giants just keep spending a certain range even when they suck. I think Sabean likes it that they have lowered expectations and then when they do decently like last year he can take credit even though they had a roughly $80 MM payroll. Not to mention that if the team had been rebuilding over the last two years they’d have a clue whether Schierholtz or Bowker can play.
The Giants payroll was roughly 95 million this year. They paid Barry Bonds $5 million + interest from his 02-06 contract. They paid Dave Roberts $6.5 m. They also paid Armando Benitez I believe $1.5 million. According to Baggs (can’t find that link (okay too lazy to look for it)) it counts against the team’s budget. Although I believe Magowan told Baggarly a different story a few seasons ago (again, too lazy to look) then re-canted once Barry was done playing.
The Giants Way™"If anybody deserves credit for this year’s turnaround it’s these two people, Brian and Bruce," Neukom said. "The encouraging thing is we think we’re back to playing baseball the way it ought to be played."
