Firstbase poll . . . could it be Lowell?

Mostly I'm sick of hearing Adam LaRoche mentioned because (a) he's not very good; (b) he's left handed and (c) he wants waaay too much money. So I thought I'd poll The Faithful. Who do you prefer?

And before voting here's a thought: what do you think of acquiring Mike Lowell for one year at 1B? (Boston throws in a lot of cash -- they've already been rumored to have been willing to toss in $9M of Lowell's $12M 2010  contract in the failed Texas trade). I know he's slow and hasn't played much first, but he can hit, and when healthy has a good glove. He'll be ready by spring training. The Red Sox need to unload him now that they have Beltre.

You won't see Pablo at first in my poll because I think he should stay at third until a better third baseman is signed. Moving him would be a last resort. And you won't see Dan Uggla in the poll either because I don't think the Giants have the guts to pull the trigger (or the Marlins are asking for too much). Uggla is actually my first choice to play first, even if doesn't want to.

And if your choice is "Other," tell us who and why.

So  . . .

Gotta love how he writes a paragraph about why Jacobs is horrible, then tries to turn the whole the around with “BUT HE HITS DINGERZ!” Jacobs pretty much hits the entire checklist of “bad player”: low BA, low OBP, bad defense, no speed. Only the power is attractive, but if you’re that seduced by SLG you need therapy.

Where is the bumper crop of 1Bs?

Unless I’m missing something, Carlos Pena is the only attractive free agent who doesn’t have an option year. LaRoche is better than Overbay and Konerko, and Lee’s getting way up there in age. Don’t get me wrong, Pena’s quite good, but he’ll be entering his age 33 season, and agreeing to the 4 year deal he’d likely demand would mean that we’re stuck with Sandoval’s glove at 3B long-term.

I’m sure Troy Glaus and Adrian Beltre and Juan Uribe et al. wanted 2 years minimum too.

by Evan on Jan 5, 2010 10:25 AM PST up reply actions

Why would he come to SF when he already has a one year on the table with Seattle? Plus, his agent wants him in Seattle as well, just trying to milk them. LHH in ATT Park makes it hard to lure them away from where they had success.

Career .234BA. He’s basically been another Uribe type (at times) but we already have one of those after today ;)

Troy Glaus had nothing to bargain with playing in 14 games last year, Beltre turned down a 2 year deal from the A’s to sign with the Sox for the market/contender. Branyan on the other hand had a monster year for what it was HR wise, and has alot more to work with.

I think he would just be a block from looking at other viable, cheaper, younger, or even in house options.

Other: Pablo Sandoval. Schierholtz and Bowker should be in RF and LF, and there’s little that can be done about SS, 2B, and CF, or the fact that DeRosa is getting a starting gig. I’m scared of DeRosa’s defense at first (though there is the SSS problem), and just about the last thing in the world I want is for Pablo to move off third, but the last thing in the world I want is him catching.

Me neither, and yet his -25.7 UZR/150 (I KNOW IT’S ONLY 117 INNINGS) really makes me unhappy.

by quincy0191 on Jan 4, 2010 10:38 PM PST up reply actions

If he were really that bad at first, he’d probably be even worse at third. However, given the far larger sample sizes he has at 2B and 3B, where he has career UZR/150 of -7.5 and -6.5, respectively, the most reasonable assumption is that he would be close to average at first.

by taliesin on Jan 5, 2010 7:11 AM PST up reply actions

And definitely a more palatable option at first than Bowker.

In the end, America will be remembered for three things: the Bill of Rights, jazz, and baseball.

by cornball on Jan 5, 2010 8:56 AM PST up reply actions

DeRosa is likely to be worse than Pablo at third. His career UZR at 3B is about -6, a little worse than Pablo’s, and he’s quite a bit older than he was the last time he played much third base. If DeRosa plays the infield (which is a bad idea), he should be at first.

by taliesin on Jan 4, 2010 10:38 PM PST up reply actions

And by quite a bit older, obviously I mean one year older.

by taliesin on Jan 5, 2010 7:13 AM PST up reply actions

You could go...

Sanchez, 3B
DeRosa, 2B
Sandoval, 1B

and keep Schierholtz and Bowker as starters in the OF. Just another example of Sabean’s brilliance in keeping so much flexibility in the lineup. /end sarcasm

I voted Ishikawa, maybe because I’m crazy.

But looking at his home/road splits, they’re a little bizarre. Hits nothing on the road, hits like crazy at home. What is this attributed to? It doesn’t seem like a stretch that his road numbers should improve over the course of a full season in 2010, though I think we can also assume he’s not going to remain a .349/.400/.535/.935 guy at home either. So is .260/.330/.390 about what we can expect out of TI?

I'm thinking but nothing's happening.

No.

Because a “full season” implies that he won’t benefit from strict platooning. If he were the full time 1B, I’d expect his numbers to decline significantly.

VAE PVTO DEVS FIO

I wouldn’t worry about the splits, just grab the largest sample size you can. He’s got a career line of .265/.330/.402, so we have to assume that that’s basically the hitter he is. He’s young enough to improve, but not young enough that you can automatically assume that he will. I think he’ll show a little more power, as he did in the minors in 2008, and some contact improvement is possible too.

He does seem to be vulnerable to lefties, so that would drive down his numbers somewhat, but in the real world he would obviously be platooned with DeRosa or Guzman or someone.

Because it frees up 1B for Adam Lind, which would thereby open up DH for Brett Wallace. He’s also getting 7 mil (I think) next year. That’s a little much for a player they don’t need. Also, since he’s only under contract for one more year, he doesn’t have too much value. We probably wouldn’t need to give them much, if anything. They’ve allegedly been trying to dump his salary.

Prefer the cheap home grown prospect

My choice is Travis Ishikawa. The guy plays near Gold Glove defense at 1B. He is very affordable. He hits well over .300 at home but struggles on the road. Three out of four is reason for hope.

TI also has a pattern of struggling for a year when he is moved up a level and then figures it out and raises his game the next year. My wish for the 2010 Giants is for our new batting coach to help Travis figure it out on the road. It’s the same ball, the same pitchers and the same distance between the mound and home plate. The problem is in his head not his abilities.

I’m telling you guys that he used some certain pitching machine device where the tennis balls had numbers on them and he would attempt to read the number on the ball. This device was at Mays Field so TI was rip roaring to go on home games.

This device/machine did not attend road trips so TI was not as prepared for away games. Not sure where I heard this report but quite possibly it was Vin Scully.

I heard the same thing. Maybe you even heard it from me. I actually was looking for some link about it today (for like the 18th time). Maybe I pulled it out of jcb9’s ass. The machine helped him focus more on the ball prior to the game. It was too heavy to take on the road.

"If anybody deserves credit for this year’s turnaround it’s these two people, Brian and Bruce," Neukom said. "The encouraging thing is we think we’re back to playing baseball the way it ought to be played."

Seen that done with colored dots on golf balls, but never with numbers. Seems pretty difficult.

yeah, that machine was the reason for his black eye half way through the season. Evan Longoria uses one too, without any crazy splits.

i may be in the minority on this one (to be honest, I can’t really get a read on how people feel about him) but I’m a fan of Schierholtz. I think RF defense is huge for us, especially when the RF gets extra responsibilities like he does 81 games a year in The Big Phone. Probably one of the toughest, if not the toughest park for RFs in the league.

LaRoche
(a) he’s not very good;

Yes he is. He has a career OPS+116 and has an adequate glove at 1B. He’s not great, but he’s a pretty good player.

(b) he’s left handed

So? Sanchez, Rowand, Renteria, Uribe, Posey and DeRosa are all RHH, we could use a LHH to balance out the line-up.

and © he wants waaay too much money

So did Beltre and how’d that end up for him? It’s not about what they want, it’s about what someone’s willing to pay him. If he could be had on a reasonable deal, he is the best option left.

Not sure what to do about my screen name at this point...

by AngelWillSaveUs on Jan 5, 2010 9:10 AM PST reply actions

Beltre turned down better offers to play for the Sox; I don’t really know why he did that, but he did, so that’s not a great example. You’re right, though, he certainly won’t get a lot, especially after the M’s got Kotchman. Looks like it’s us or the Orioles, and he turned down a 2/17 deal which I think he’ll regret in the coming weeks.

by quincy0191 on Jan 5, 2010 4:30 PM PST up reply actions

Thinking of 2011-beyond, maybe? I am not sure how much sense this makes, but maybe he goes into the RH batter friendly Fenway and boosts those shiny stats that some GMs love (/looks at Sabes), then signs a 3 year deal.

by Giant among Angels on Jan 5, 2010 8:48 PM PST up reply actions

That was the rationale, but I can’t imagine Beltre will be that much better in a year; in all probability, he’ll just be a year older and a year worse. He apparently had a three or four year contract offer, and I can’t imagine taking the one year in Boston was a better move.

Rowand has ZERO trade value

unless it’s for a player with a longer and more expensive contract than him but is just as average a player (Vernon Wells comes to mind). I doubt the Giants will eat his contract anytime soon so get ready for more poopin’ stance until after 2012 in which the world will end anyway.

Win the inning.

by foothillsfan on Jan 6, 2010 7:30 AM PST reply actions

I think it’s just the opposite; there aren’t a lot of bidders, and apparently we pulled the offer right after he rejected it, which doesn’t make me think it’ll go higher (we’d obviously keep the lower offer on the table before making a higher one). Sabean may finally have realized that he doesn’t need a 1B with Uribe and DeRosa able to play so many positions.

by quincy0191 on Jan 6, 2010 12:36 PM PST up reply actions

It still seems so funny to me that Sabean and Bochy talk about how these guys have such positional flexibility that they could play 1st, 2nd, 3rd, LF… But the one position nobody can play is SS, except Renteria.

by JRPhillips on Jan 6, 2010 3:19 PM PST up reply actions

Laroche doesn't want to play here

And I don’t blame him or care. I was never an Ishikawa believer, but I just don’t think we should sign someone of equal or lesser value. Dude’s only 26 and his first full year wasn’t a failure nor particularly illuminating with regard to his minor league performance. It seems that his home and road splits are both unrealistic so it would be interesting to let him play with wet feet next year and see which one is closer to the truth rather than paying some 3rd tier douche bag to see if he can put his jock on straight. Also, how would TI possibly get more AB’s by playing outfield? Lewbowkerholtz don’t need an Ishi prefix or even a kawa suffix.
