how the fuck

do you rate Stanton over Heyward?

Same age and Heyward blows Stanton away in production so far.

Neal is real…ly not a first baseman.

I try not to break the rules, but merely to test their elasticity.

I was going to say that having only three prospects in the top hundred was kinda depressing, considering how much love the farm system has been getting lately (though two in the top 12 is nice). Then I saw the frickin Dodgers have only two, and one was #100. So I feel much better now…

Jarrod Parker #21? He’s going to miss all of 2010 after TJ surgery.

This seems like a not very well done list. Doesn’t seem they have a good grasp of positional adjustments, nor of the impact of age/level on a prospects status. A couple of the pitchers over Bumgarner are very questionable, anyone but Heyward, Strasburg and Feliz over Posey is very questionable, Neal is listed as 1B but Brett Wallace at 3B? I love this quote (about Yankees prospect Montero):

Can he catch? Yes. Will he catch? It doesn’t matter much.

Um, it matters a great deal. Being a C is worth 2.5 WAR more than being a 1B (though you expect some decline in hitting stats, both in games played and in wOBA because C is tough to play)….so yeah.

by Missing Barry on Jan 26, 2010 7:46 AM PST reply actions

I also never liked ranking a Prospect with 12 innings of Professional innings over proven pro commodities. Strasburg is special, but I would probably take Heyward before him both were up for drafting today.

Especially a pitcher….

by Missing Barry on Jan 26, 2010 8:26 AM PST up reply actions

That’s an interesting question. On the one hand, a 2.5 win difference in replacement level is just enormous. On the other hand, you have the playing time factor, the diminished performance that results from playing catcher, the fact that Montero is apparently pretty terrible behind the plate, and the impossible-to-measure developmental considerations. Add it all up and I think it’s close.

by Evan on Jan 26, 2010 8:52 AM PST up reply actions

Well, the point I’m responding to is whether it matters if he can play C or not, which is how I interpretted their statement (as saying it doesn’t matter). So I’m assuming if he does become a C, it means he can play it adequately. Not necessarily good, or even average, but enough to make his bat more than worthwhile. The difference at that point still has to be at least 1,1.5 WAR annually, which is pretty big, and should greatly affect his rating as a prospect. Whether he can or can’t play C matters, a lot.

by Missing Barry on Jan 26, 2010 9:20 AM PST up reply actions

At the same time, Montero has been compared to Manny Ramirez and similar players with the bat – if he lives up to that, he certainly doesn’t need to play catcher to be worthy of top 10 prospect status

I think Missing Barry is just tuning in on the fact that it is extremely poor judgment to write “it doesn’t matter”, especially for someone who is suppose to be an expert on prospects.

by say hey nation on Jan 26, 2010 9:51 AM PST up reply actions

Yeah, basically. It’s not like I know anything about baseball scouting or have better information than these guys, so I’ll leave it to them to do the scouting/evaluations, but if whether a guy can play C or has to be a 1B/DH doesn’t factor into their rankings, then they’re doing it wrong, plain and simple. I do know about MLB value…

by Missing Barry on Jan 26, 2010 9:59 AM PST up reply actions

Well, I do agree with that.

Mike Minor at #43?

Matzek and Turner both made it in the 90s? And no Zack Wheeler? So no bias against HS pitchers. Just… odd. Then again, he didn’t rank Hobgood either.

Hector Sanchez: Underrated. Fighting body bias since the 2009 off season. I still love you, son, even if you're fat.
