I just voted, and then was shocked to see Matt was in the lead (Monday morning). I think it’s several rungs too low, but hey….

He’s been old for his level, but hey, this is prospect 32 in the Giants system and Otero should get some recognition.

Downs

In 08, about the 3rd or 4th best hitter on SJ, after Pablo and Brad Boyer (?), then he jumps 2 levels and has an excellent 2009 skipping a level. Is outhit at Fresno by only Bowker, Guzman :( and Posey. Sounds like hi 20s or low 30s. Birthday 26 soon, and with Sanchez likely on the DL, competing with Burris and Velez for Opening Day 2B job.

Uribe’s gonna be the opening day second baseman if (when) Sanchez isn’t ready to go. They’ve already said as much. But one of Burriss, Downs, Rohlinger, or Frandsen (assuming he’s not DFA by then) will take Uribe’s spot as the utility guy. I’m assuming that Velez will make the team anyway as the 5th OF, unfortunately.

CHRIS GLOOR, DAMMIT

Because 6’6" lefties with three pitches who were formerly solid prospects whose stock fell due to a bad stretch in college ball and who then had a good pro debut don’t grow on trees.

Last time it was because they tied in the runoff. In general, I put them back in because they aren’t guaranteed to win. They are most likely to win, probably, but you never know.

There’s no guarantee he was the second choice of the people who didn’t vote for him in the runoff.

I asked this in the previous thread and did not receive a response, so I’ll try again.

Anyone know anything about Audy Santana? I was skimming through the BA Almanac and his 12.97 k/9 caught my eye. he does seem to be a bit old for the AZL (turns 24 in Nov). Also, someone may know how we got him, as his stats for 07-08 are for CHI-N.

I went Fairley...

this is it for me. He produces this year, or no more. It was obvious when he was drafted he was a project. He still has the same tantalizing “tools,” as before. He’s still relatively young (21, 22 by the start of the season), so all hope is not lost.

On a side note, since I’m relatively new to the site and thus new to the fan rankings, I’m wondering why everyone loves Kieschnick as much as they d?. I mean it’s not just here, BA and Sickles love him as well, and obviously power is his calling card, but for a college guy I’d like to see better than a 36:130 BB:K in Advanced A. It is promising seeing some strides made in the second half, but I’d personally put him behind Rafael Rodriguez (while simultaneously moving Rodriguez up).

I’m a huge Rodriguez backer. I remember reading he has projectable plus power,, but I’m most excited by his discipline. The kid had a 16:23 BB:K as a 17 year old in rookie ball. Pretty darn impressive IMO, considering Angel Villalona has NEVER displayed any discipline. Speaking of Angel, I’m aware of his legal issues, but why does that prevent him from being on this list?

by JoshShep50 on Jan 24, 2010 8:27 PM PST reply actions

We decided that, if Villalona’s legal problems are cleared up, we’ll hold a special vote to see where we should put him on the list. Until then, nobody’s really sure what to do with him.

Angel’s also on the Restricted List currently, so strictly technically speaking he’s not actually in the Giants system at the moment. So it did seem strange trying to rank him right now.

My Bucardo is better than yours.

A hot August weekday, before a small crowd, when the only thing at stake is the tissue-thin difference between a thing done well and a thing done ill. Insofar as the clutch hitter is not a sportswriter's myth, it is a vulgarity, like a writer who writes only for money.

by Roger on Jan 25, 2010 6:33 AM PST up reply actions

I believe Kieschnick was working with the Giants on revising his swing, so I think some leeway is given there. He walked more in college, so there’s hope, at least for me, that once he gets comfortable his discipline will return. Plus, he plays a good RF and has a cannon.

Welcome to the site! It’s always nice to have more people interested in the Giants minors.

Juan Carlos Perez, please start hitting.

Thanks...

this is becoming a daily staple. I’d heard good things about McCovey Chronicles, and am glad I finally started checking it out. I’m definitely a prospect sucker (pre-ordered BA Handbook, Sickels will be pre-ordered shortly as well). Being a Giants fan in NY (not city, Central NY, still too close to meatball Yankees fans for my liking). leaves me craving Giants info, and I’m not satisfying that urge here.

by JoshShep50 on Jan 24, 2010 9:59 PM PST up reply actions

Hopefully he could be Schierholtz with actual in-game power. Which would be acceptable out of Nate actually.

Might have convinced me for the next one. Of course, pretty soon I’m going to be enticed to me move on to the young ‘uns in the Hernandez/Flores/Villegas/Izturis realm. I’d like to get Belt, Downs, McBryde, King group in first, but I keep getting stymied.

I kinda get the Downs vote but not entirely. He’s not particularly young and I’ve never read any glowing reviews of his defense. His bat looks below average for the majors.

Also, I think at this point I tend to start voting more on upside than the low-ceiling guys. So players like Belt appeal more to me because of their ‘what-if’ nature.

Looks like Adrianza a year ago with better contact numbers. Supposedly he has a good glove too.
