Who takes Freddy Sanchez's spot?
So i assume you all know that Freddy Sanchez had arthroscopic surgery on his left shoulder today. They don't know if he will ready for Opening Day, and i highly doubt he will be, but who do you think deserves a shot for his roster spot as he rehabs? Does Juan Uribe start at 2nd & keep DeRosa at LF?. Or do the Giants test out Burriss at second and make him the leadoff hitter? Does Franny get his second chance at the job? Do the Giants sign John Patterson and hope he can still perform?

Putting DeRosa at second would open up left field for Lewis/Bowker/VROOM/Byrnes/Dye/Bonds
Adopted father of the prettiest player in the organization, Nestor Rojas.
DeRosa to 2nd, Lewis to left.
Thats what I would do anyway.

Not that they would choose Lewis over Velez or anything. /facepalm

Ya. But I only want Lewis for leadoff. If Lewis doesnt want to bat leadoff, I would rather have Bowker in the lineup. That still leaves us without a decent leadoff hitter though.

If Lewis doesnt want to bat leadoff
I don’t get it. Why wouldn’t Lewis want to bat leadoff?
by Missing Barry on Jan 22, 2010 11:16 AM PST up reply actions
Because he said he was uncomfortable in the role after being used in a different role throughout Spring Training last year. Which sounds reasonable, but isn’t. Because in media-speak that literally translates to “I hate this and I won’t do it. You guys can all fuck yourselves.”
I don't know about that, to the groin.
by howtheyscored on Jan 22, 2010 11:21 AM PST up reply actions
Was he more comfortable picking splinters out of his rear end? I never got that. If given a choice between starting and having to take one at bat a game as the leadoff hitter versus sitting and getting at best one PH appearance, one might chose to overcome one’s biases against leading off. Perhaps Freddy is not very bright?
But he never said “I’d rather sit on the bench than bat leadoff.” He wasn’t given any choice. He expressed a personal concern to his coach, not this hardline demand to the media that this gets misconstrued as for some reason. And he got monumentally punished for it out of hand. if I was any player on the Giants, after seeing that, I’d never say anything remotely honest to Bochy ever again. Because I don’t want to get benched for it.
I don't know about that, to the groin.

“Ummm, some guys might call me a ’player’s manager,” and maybe that’s true. Just don’t ask guys like Freddy, Frandsy, Bowky, Garky, or Posey."
I'm thinking but nothing's happening.
If I was Lewis I would just own the team’s second highest OBP in ‘09, do well in the limited role given to me, and have the ability to fill the team’s need for a viable leadoff hitter. If he would have done those things he would have HAD to be given a job. Right?….Right?
Brian says a lot of things. Brian only does one thing, though. Get low OBP hacking suckholes who’s best years are in the past. - Missing Barry
No. He hit .194/.296/.226 as a leadoff hitter in ‘09. Stats don’t lie, dummy.
by Missing Barry on Jan 22, 2010 1:07 PM PST up reply actions
He had 62 total at bats after starting the game as the #1 hitter. In those, he hit .194/.296/.226. Of those ABs, roughly 13 of them were actual leadoff ABs (first AB of the game). However, he had a total of 89 ABs when he was actually the first batter of the inning and in those, he hit: .326/.394/.461. Seems to me like he should be begging to lead off.
Ha, nice! Way to show my sarcastic small sample split up by coming up with a better, smaller sample to contradict it! I concede, friend. You win. :)

I can’t speak for others, but I personally am drawn to my employees who say, “I will do whatever it takes to help this team especially if it means I get to keep my job.”
And the context is here. Bottom line is that he sucked. Interestingly, he went on to hit all four of the homeruns he hit over the entire season between May 15 and June 19. I guess the experiment worked…
Again, though, you’re not understanding what he said. “I’m not comfortable” is not mutually exclusive with “I’m doing everything I can to be successful.”
He never said, “I will not do whatever it takes to help this team, regardless of whether or not that means I keep my job.” He didn’t. You’re drawing a false correlation. For all you know, he went to Bochy and said, “Bruce, I wanted to let you know that I haven’t been comfortable leading off. Now, I’ll do everything I can to help this team, even if that means I keep leading off for the rest of the season, but I wanted to let you know how I feel because giving you this information might help you get the most of me.”
Or he might have said, “Listen, Boch, I haven’t been comfortable batting leadoff out there. But I really want to help the team and I know I can do that the most by batting leadoff. Do you have any tips that might help me get a little more comfortable out there?”
“I’m not comfortable” does not in any way mean “I don’t want to help as much as I can.”
I don’t know why anybody keeps interpreting it that way.
I don't know about that, to the groin.
by howtheyscored on Jan 22, 2010 1:48 PM PST up reply actions
Now don’t get me wrong. I’m not saying that he DID say something like that. I’m not privy to any more information than “he said he wasn’t comfortable.” All I’m saying is that jumping to any conclusion as hard-nosed as “he doesn’t want to play” is freaking ridiculous.
I don't know about that, to the groin.

I like how it wasn’t even a quote, either, just a kind of summary statement by the writer….
by Missing Barry on Jan 22, 2010 2:32 PM PST up reply actions
What he said to Bork behind closed doors is known only to them. What I am saying, is that he made one public statement in which he a) endorsed not wanting to leadoff and b) did not endorse a desire to do what it takes to help the team (despite a). You are correct that he might well have said a lot more in private. I also agree that he did not overtly come out and state that he would rather not play than bat first (a la Conan). What I conclude, however, is that his one public statement combined with what he did not say makes me assume that he was pretty freaking unhappy about leading off and was not shy about making it known. I would guess that he arrogantly thought that he would be moved to a place in the order where he was more comfortable. I also would guess that part of the reason he stopped playing was that he was not seen by management as being a team player.
I hope Lewis finds a good team that will use him properly. I just hope it’s not in the NL West.

And I would guess that you’re really jumping to a lot of conclusions.
They’re not exactly groundless conclusions, I’ll admit. But you still have to do a lot of jumping to get to them. And taking so much intense issue with a player based on a giant load of assumptions that you have to make about a situation that you have no actual perspective on just doesn’t seem fair to me.
I don't know about that, to the groin.
by howtheyscored on Jan 22, 2010 2:04 PM PST up reply actions
You are absolutely right. I am making lots of assumptions, and I am probably wrong on many if not most. What is clear though is that a talented player who one year ago was slated to be the number 1 outfielder on the team and one of its offensive leaders is now out of its future plans. I can guess why that is, but that it is, is not disputable. You can fill in the blanks about why you think it is. I am; we all do it and there are lots of examples (Frandsen). I hardly think it is unfair. And p.s., are you not assuming that I have no actual perspective on this story? For all you know, I could be Larry Baer or his wife or best friend. That is kind of unfair…
Oh-ho. You got me.

This whole time I thought you were joking about the Lewis not wanting to bat leadoff stuff. :(
It’s a pretty big stretch to say anything, really, given that the statement in context isn’t even a quote from Lewis. Just a general summary from the writer. For all we know, the conversation went something like this:
Schulman: Hey Fred!
Fred: Oh, it’s you. You suck.
S: Yeah? Well you suck at hitting leadoff. How about that.
F: Whatever man.
S: Were you uncomfortable there or something?
F: Sure.
S: snickers to self, I got that sucker now
F: Um….I gotta go.
S: Nooooooo…..give me a story!
F: Dude, I told you, you suck.

Derosa is a terrible infielder and a very good corner outfielder. I don’t mind if they want to use him as an infielder on a double switch or something, but I don’t think he should ever start a game at second or third unless there’s an injury and they don’t have time to call somebody up from Fresno.
He’s only played 219 games in the OF. Is that enough to know that he’s “very good”?
We're all basically Pedro Feliz.
by SF Pete on Jan 22, 2010 11:25 AM PST up reply actions 1 recs
Given what we know about COF (they’re very, very bad fielders and thus the bar is incredibly low), how high his UZR/150 is (15.8), and his 1600+ IP, I think it’s pretty fair to say he’s pretty darn good. 15.8 good? Probably less than that by some amount, but at worst he’s gotta be a +8 fielder or so there….
by Missing Barry on Jan 22, 2010 11:27 AM PST up reply actions
This can't be stressed enough.
219 games is not near to 3 seasons which UZR needs to be reliable gauge. I am not going to guess how many of those games were played coming back froma wrist injury either. I am not saying DeRosa would be train wreck out there but there is long way between "Meh" and Ok and farther to "very good."
Threat level that the 2010 Pads finish with more wins than the 2010 Giants is currently at - 25%
Kevin Mitchell
was a strong guy who injured his wrists after too many check swings. Do you recall how much playing time he missed? Maybe we could use that as a gauge for DeRosa.
Apparently I’m the only one who objects to:
3 seasons which UZR needs to be reliable gauge
3 seasons isn’t enough for UZR. The whole thing is 3 seasons of UZR = 1 season of hitting stats in terms of reliability….but one season of hitting stats isn’t reliable enough! So neither is 3 seasons of UZR (though it is a good start)….

Unbelievable
I…I
I am speechless (seriously, I am; there was a good five minute pause between writing than and writing the next sentence). When is Sabean going to cut his losses from the Alderson trade and move on? If Sanchez spends two years on the DL, will Sabean re-sign him to get value out of that trade? How the hell did Sanchez pass a physical TWICE (and if they didn’t give him one before the extension, there’s a pretty good chance I’m going to go crazy and start mailing turds) and BOTH TIMES get cleared, then have major surgery a few months later? Did the Giants’ medical staff get their licenses in the Philippines (okay, that’s pretty insulting to the Philippnes’ medical schools; they clearly would have flunked these would-be doctors)? I suppose I should be glad this isn’t July, and we’re learning about how he’s been hurt and needed surgery for the last few months.
At any point in the future is Brian Sabean going to think, “Hey, all these veterans I keep signing don’t really perform the way they did before I signed them, and I keep ending up with bloated contracts for nonproductive players while the guys who are actually doing something get paid league minimum because they’re farm system products, and MAYBE I SHOULD STOP SIGNING SO MANY MEDIOCRE, INJURY-PRONE PLAYERS TO FILL HOLES THAT COULD JUST AS WELL BE FILLED BY FARM GUYS FOR FIFTY TIMES LESS”.
I think I should go to sleep before this develops from a burning anger to a white-hot rage that turns into a tri-state killing spree.

Bochy is going to start Uribe at 2nd(even though he should be starting at shortstop over Renteria) on opening day and that is the way it should be. Uribe was our second best hitter last year and he isn’t even going to be starting because they overpaid for Renteria.

Schulman says that Uribe will take 2B,
which makes sense given the money they are paying him. The interesting part is what it does to the rest of the roster, as in, which of the kids gets to stick on the roster at the start of the season.
It’s simply amazing that the same medical staff that ruined Noah Lowry has now cleared Freddie Sanchez twice when both times he was damaged. And yet this front office still spends millions of dollars based on their decisions.
Just wow.
Responsible for the last great homegrown Giants team.
It’s hard to know for sure, but I suspect the medical staff is getting a bad rap. Pitchers get hurt. 32-year-old second basemen get hurt. This is an inescapable fact of athletics and there is no team that avoids it. The smart ones just try to stay away from older players.
In addition to which, there aren’t any strict standards to passing team physicals. Every team does them differently and looks for different things. Probably every team looks for different things with different players. Nor is the front office bound in any way to listen to anything the doctor’s tell them after the physical." Certainly in Sanchez’ case (being out of the lineup due to injury AND bothered by other ailments at the time of his trade) “passing the physical” just meant that the front office felt the gamble was worth the risk no matter what the medical staff had to say about his health.
My Bucardo is better than yours.
A hot August weekday, before a small crowd, when the only thing at stake is the tissue-thin difference between a thing done well and a thing done ill. Insofar as the clutch hitter is not a sportswriter's myth, it is a vulgarity, like a writer who writes only for money.
I’m pretty ok with giving the medical staff a hard time for Sanchez. It’s not like he went out and got hurt from the labors of playing every day. Both times we acquired him, we subjected him to a physical, he passed, and yet he came to the organization injured. How is that acceptable?
by Missing Barry on Jan 22, 2010 11:21 AM PST up reply actions
Yup
I could see Posey getting hurt, or Sandoval, or Bowker, or Schierholtz; someone who was playing fall or winter ball. Sanchez wasn’t doing anything, and the fact that he passed two physicals and needed surgery soon after both is worrisome.
I’m not so sure about that. I know that a lot of people don’t listen to their doctor’s counsel. Or maybe the Giants doctors are just way too scared of Sabean and his merry men. I don’t think it would be too far off to imagine that the doctors said something like “Well, I’m not sure…his arm is still definitely attached, and he could experience some soreness, but he HAS had injuries before, so this is expected of course. All in all, he’s what you would expect from a 30 something athlete. He IS going to wear down sometime soon, again, like most athletes”
Giants: “So, he’s not injured right?”
Doctor: “Er…No, not ye-…”
Giants: “Thanks doc, now do what you’re told and give ’im a clean bill of health…with flying colors too! I wanna see a big red A+ on that chart”

For most orthopedic problems, surgery is not the first option. Rest followed by rehab is usually used (because it often works), with surgery considered if things don’t improve.
In the end, America will be remembered for three things: the Bill of Rights, jazz, and baseball.
That makes sense. It’s just frustrating in hindsight since the last three months could’ve been used to recover from the surgery…
Yeah, it does suck. At this point, though, what can be done? I’m just hoping he doesn’t too many regular season games and stays healthy once he does return.

Uribe starts season at 2nd and hits like last year. Renteria unfortunately also hits like last year. Team improves when Sanchez rejoins club in May and Uribe moves to SS permanently. Huzzah!
Choppin' broccoli
Sabean is a complete reactionary!
He said the Giants would be patient this year, which would have been smart. But he only figured that out after last year’s Renteria debacle. Then of course he really didn’t go through with it as he jumped on Sanchez early. I was sure after the knee injury that one game they would not exercise his otion. I guess I was right, but I did not figure a 2 year deal would be the alternative. Sabean could have waited until now and probably added Lopez and Damon for less than all the other guys.
Also, with the constant complaining about the park not allowing him to go after hitters, why not pursue a pitcher. I don’t think there is a diminishing returns concern on run prevention that makes it less valuable than pun production, so ostensibly if hitters don’t want to come then pitchers might. They could point to what Penny did here and what it got him to maybe convince a guy like Sheets to sign a one-year incentive ladden deal. If he does well, it would allow them to potentially deal Sanchez for Uggla a mid-season, or something similar.
One thing I would say is that I believe the Zito signing was in line with this possibility. Had Zito perfomed well the first year, it would have given them the flexibility to trade either Cain or Lincecum. It might have ended up being the Rios trade, so I think the silver lining with Zito being a disaster has been that it prevented that deal. But I still believe in the approach of using the park’s reputation to sign FA pitchers and then deal for bats, assuming Sabean is being genuine about bats not wanting to come here.
Finally, who is going to bat 2nd?
Didn’t they negotiate the new deal before Sabean had to make the decision on the option? If so, he might have figured he was in a better bargaining position with Sanchez before hitting the open market.
I’d say Sabean has otherwise been pretty patient.

BYRNES!!!!
He can play 2nd…he’s a gamer!
yeah...whatever...
No, no
Byrnes in Left, Nate in Right, DeRosa at Second.
when Sanchez returns
DeRosa in Left, Byrnes in Right and Sanchez at Second.
Adopted brother of Jason Jarvis. To pass the time during the offseason I decided to try my hand at blogging about photography and music.
F. Sanchez will come back in May, blow that shoulder completely out and miss the rest of the season. I bet he’ll get 100-150 PA’s now. That guys broken. He sucks anyway, so I’m not bummed at all. Uribe is the better player at this point.
Matt Cain: throwing complete game shutouts since 06'. No big deal.
by cain1rstballothof on Jan 22, 2010 10:27 AM PST reply actions
They can’t take DeRosa out of left field, because that would be two corner outfielder under the age of 30, and that can’t be had.
Obviously it’s not going to be WTFrandsen, Sabean still hasn’t forgiven him for wanting to play.
The way it works is as many gamery veterans need to start as possible. So Uribe at second, Rent at short, DeRosa in left. Bam. Done.
I'm thinking but nothing's happening.
Sabean still hasn’t forgiven him for wanting to play
I’ve seen a lot of Sabean hates Frandsen jokes, so I’m really not sure why, but this one made me lol.

Sanchez surgery
Sanchez had a history of injuries while in Pittsburgh. Who did the “due diligence” when he was acquired?
The trade was unpopular, Sanchez 2009 results were marginal, the new contract unfathomable.
Sabean strikes again.

the trade made some sense at the time, though it quickly went down the tubes. What I can’t understand is the rush to re-sign Sanchez to a fairly lucrative deal when players like Lopez, Hudson, K. Johnson, Uggla, Iwamura, etc etc were all likely to be available this offseason.

CAN’T HEAR YOU!
ALSO WE CAN’T AFFORD HOLLIDAY, HE’LL NEVER WANT TO PLAY HERE!

The math is simple
Market value for the guys you mentioned is around $3 million. Freddy Sanchez has three all-star appearances. Obviously each one is worth $1 million extra per year…
You guys just don't get it.
They are not going to replace him. THEY WON’T NEED TO.
Renteria will have such a bounceback year that he will be able to cover both 2B and SS. He will turn split second double plays all by himself.
And don’t get me started on the offensive year he will have, do I see visions of an MVP award?

And thus, the Kevin Frandsen Era begins...
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!
Sorry, I just had to get that out.
Hector Sanchez: Underrated. Fighting body bias since the 2009 off season. I still love you, son, even if you're fat.
Doesn’t it seem like the Frandsen (or Lewis) era is more likely to end by the time of today’s 2 pm press conference. They’re kind of out of dead wood on the 40 man unless they want to cut somebody like Sosa or Guzman loose. I suppose they could reassing Whiteside and give themselves till the end of ST to find another roster spot for a backup catcher.
My Bucardo is better than yours.

Yeah, I bet Frandsen is gone.

whoops, that was in 2008 he had one at bat, wasn’t it? My bad!
I'm thinking but nothing's happening.
Frandsen is supposedly going to be at fanfest, so I doubt he’s being released today. It also makes no sense to release one of your 2b prospects on the day you announce your starting second baseman has had surgery.

At least we are losing players to surgery
The A’s are losing them to GOD.
http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/story/Oakland-As-prospect-leaving-baseball-for-priesthood-012210
Outfielder Grant Desme, one of the Oakland A’s top prospects, has decided to retire from baseball in order to pursue the priesthood.
An A’s official confirmed Desme’s decision this morning, saying the 23-year-old is "serious" about the big career change.

Tweet from Kawakami
timkawakami: Freddy Sanchez has as many surgeries (2) as a Giant as extra-base hits (1 double, 1 HR) or years extended on his contract (thru 2011).
We're all basically Pedro Feliz.

If the Pirates management is like Costco
I think the Giants can still return him for Alderson, if they kept the receipt. If not, I’ll take store credit and choose McCutcheon.
Win the inning.

Can anyone please explain to me what the f*ck is wrong with our training/medical staff?
Lowry’s injury was misdiagnosed
Sanchez’ knee was checked out before the trade?
and now even though everyone knew Sanchez’ shoulder was screwed up, they wait til a month before Spring Training to scope it?

Threat level that the 2010 Pads finish with more wins than the 2010 Giants is currently at - 25%
The Sanchez/Alderson trade
This trade is on a straight line track to take its’ place as #3 on my list of all time worst Sabean trades.
Undisputed #1 Nathan/Liriano/Boof for A. J. P. (A jar of poop)
#2 Barnes for Garko A highly regarded prospect for basically zero return
#3 Alderson for a peg legged one armed Pirate
I bet Sabean had a really bad day when he heard the news Franchez needed more surgery. He didn’t have the balls to announce it himself. Forced Bork to slip it out hoping no one would notice.

Not one mention of Kevin Frandsen. Sabean and Bochy have succeeded in removing him from the collective conscience of the fans.
