I had repressed that memory after years of therapy.
I went to those games. Four game series against the Pirates, who going in were just as bad as the Giants in the standings. Afterwards, the Giants were in dead last. Some klutz missed third base and was called out on appeal. It was so bad that I spotted it sitting in the upper deck. Those were good times. Not really.

I booed Ray Durham once. I was at the game in 2006, I think it was, when the Dodgers clinched a playoff berth at the Phone Booth. The Giants were just embarrassingly flat and unmotivated, given the situation, and Durham allowed a guy to tag and score from third on a pop-up to second. Just… not paying attention. Whoops. I was pretty angry with him.

I didn’t like how he shat bricks when Posey got called up last year. He’s 35 and average. He should know that a 23-year-old top prospect is going to have a far bigger place in his team’s future than he will. It also pisses me off when people consider themselves extremely important to their team, especially when they aren’t actually good.

right but he’s not really backing it up with stellar defense and baserunning.
That said, you’re sorta right. They paid about what Molina’s value would be to an average team, just not what Molina’s marginal value was to them, which is his value over Posey.

Why do people obsess about OBP when it comes to Bengie
This is the one guy I DON’T want to see on base that often. If he gets on in 2 out of 10 plate appearances, that’s fine, as long as those two hits drive in runners. I’ll say it once again: Buster needs more time in the minors as he is still learning, and another few months isn’t going to be a bad thing for his development. And would you really rather have Whiteside as the starter going into the season.
by crazedcrustacean on Jan 19, 2010 2:18 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
Yea, for some reason i agree with this, his place in the batting order shouldn’t require an OBP that is that good

1/4.5 is just no money at all. He’s been pretty consistently a ~2 win player in his career. I wanted Posey to be the catcher, but that was obviously not going to happen. If there’s anything to get mad over, it’s that decision. Once that one was made, 1/4.5 to Molina just really isn’t a bad option.

+1. The decision not to play Posey, especially with the 40 man roster spot and the arb clock ticking, is idiotic. I do not trust Bochy to play him when the time comes.
But if they were going to insist on signing a veteran catcher, yeah, you may have wasted $1-2M over Yorvit or such, but I’m not at all uncomfortable with Molina on a one year deal and I’d argue with. If Posey picks it up, then trade Molina to the Mets or such at the deadline.
As it turns out, the decision not to offer arbitration was genius, when I thought it was stupid. Probably saved $2-4M.

Pretty much this. I think he’s probably really worth half a win or so, but basically he’s a $4.5M replacement player.
My calculation is: fangraphs’ WAR = 2 – 0.5 runs (baserunning) – 1 run (defense).
by taliesin on Jan 19, 2010 9:42 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
Yeah, but what you’re not taking into account is the fact that you can’t hurt your team with your baserunning when you don’t get on base in the first place. :)
by Missing Barry on Jan 20, 2010 8:44 AM PST up reply actions 0 recs
I don’t think so. Barajas would have been cheaper and just as good. I just don’t see how this isn’t an egregious overpay. What does Bengie do that makes him worth $2M more than Barajas? He’s not very good defensively and contributes nothing on offense except DINGERZ.

He’s not going to be traded. First of all, he’s going to stink, so he will have no trade value. Second of all, if we postulate that he plays well (by his standards), the Giants will almost certainly still be “in this thing” (within, say, 4-5 games of a playoff spot) at the deadline, so they naturally will not be able to trade their cleanup hitting catcher.

Here’s a hypothetical situation: you’re running a baseball team. Your starting catcher is in his mid-30s, is fat, and last year had the second worst on-base percentage IN ALL OF BASEBALL. He’s a free agent now. Meanwhile, in your system, you have the best catching prospect in all of baseball. He spent time at AAA last year, where he put up great numbers, and even had a cup of coffee in the majors. Do YOU re-sign your fat, old, shitty starting catcher? If you answer, “Yes, I’d give him $4.5 million,” congratulations: you’re Brian Sabean. Also, you’re a fucking moron.

But they have very different personalities. Minaya is charming, nice, and energetic, whereas Sabean is arrogant, standoffish, and stubborn. I know at the end of the day that doesn’t count for much but at the very least Minaya is likable person, which makes his boneheaded decisions easier to swallow

+ Good experience and results with our pitching staff. I think the pitchers feel comfortable with him behind the plate
+ Only 1 year
+ Full season of Buster learning from Bengie (hopefully)
- Seriously clogs the bases due to his lack of speed and OBP
- Blocks Posey
- 4.5 million which could have been spent on a legitimate 5th starter
All in all, if he’s hitting 6th or 7th, it’s an OK signing…Certainly shows that Sabean hasn’t learned anything, but it might help us win more games..

Here's what I don't get
This signing does two things: it blocks Posey and it virtually guarantees that Bumgarner starts the year in the rotation. At the beginning of the off-season, which prospect appeared to be more major league-ready? The guy who got significant playing time in AAA or the guy who saw his stuff decline in AA?

It is in the best interests of our team for the Giants to suck out loud this year.
All of the assets on the team are young, so it’s not like there’s a closing window of opportunity. The absolute best thing that can happen to the team is for the Giants to lose 88 games and for Sabean to be canned.

That is a bad baseball team. I can’t believe they’re really spending $14M in 2010 on players (Derosa, Huff, Molina) that will, at best, not make the team any better at all relative to free alternatives. You can buy something pretty nice for $14M. (And that doesn’t even count the $2M or so they could have saved by choosing a cheaper alternative to Franchez.)

He is better than Torres or Velez maybe. But starting him over Lewis or Bowker is a joke.
No one here gets out alive.
by Bond16 on Jan 20, 2010 9:51 AM PST up reply actions 0 recs
I agree. But it’s closer than you make it seem, because Schierholtz is much better defensively than either of them, and also a better baserunner than at least Bowker.
by taliesin on Jan 20, 2010 9:55 AM PST up reply actions 0 recs
I’m actually not sure about why we believe Bowker would be better. Other than being a relatively unknown major league commodity, he’s older than Schierholtz and never really outperformed him as a minor leaguer. Bowker took more walks. Schierholtz hit for more power. The overall product has been about the same. And Schierholtz is younger and plays better defense.
And as major leaguers, the difference between them is less than 100 at bats. If we want Bowker because he’s an “unknown” then Schierholtz is actually almost exactly as much of an “unknown” except that his similarly short major league track record is MUCH better.
I don't know about that, to the groin.
by howtheyscored on Jan 20, 2010 10:23 AM PST up reply actions 0 recs
I guess I don’t want to start a guy with a major league track record of .702 OPS at a corner outfield position. He had his 300 PAs last year to prove himself and I think he proved he was a capable bench player. I would rather give Bowker 200 consistent PAs to prove his 2009 AAA season might translate into major league production.
No one here gets out alive.
by Bond16 on Jan 20, 2010 11:40 AM PST up reply actions 0 recs
But what about Schierholtz’s 472 career at bats of .731 OPS (.702 was in 2009 only) is that much more PROVEN than John Bowker’s 393 career at bats of a .693 OPS? A whole 79 at bats difference means that much to you?
And what about Schierholtz’s career minor league .871 OPS is that much less convincing than Bowker’s career minor league .857 OPS?
Really, the only thing Bowker has is that he’s performed slightly better in AAA than Schierholtz did, even though almost all of that was achieved in 450 at bats at the age of 25 when Schierholtz managed his in almost 800 at bats – most of which came in his age 23 and 24 seasons.
I mean, there’s almost no reason to think that Bowker is better than Schierholtz at all, except for the one AAA season and the OMG WALKS. Schierholtz is younger, and he has a longer track record of actually performing better. And he’s outperformed Bowker with the bat at the major league level in an almost identical total number of at bats (small though that number may be). And he’s a better fielder.
I’m not trying to dismiss wanting to see Bowker. Hell, I want to see Bowker. I just don’t quite understand where the perception came from that he’s really that much better than Nate. Maybe it’s just the truth that both of them are pretty marginal.
I don't know about that, to the groin.
by howtheyscored on Jan 20, 2010 12:42 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
You can quote their career stats all you want. But this is Bowker’s 2009 AAA line:
PAs 450, OBP .451, OPS 1.047
You agreed you want to see Bowker and this is exactly why people want to see what he can do! Maybe he learned something in AAA. Lets find out. Nate never put up numbers like that for a full season in the minors and he had his 300 PAs last year to prove he could hit in the bigs. My personal evaluation of him is over, but its not for Johnny boy.
No one here gets out alive.
by Bond16 on Jan 20, 2010 1:18 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
I acknowledged the very good AAA season that Bowker had last season. But you’re not acknowledging that crutching on a 450 at bat sample of his entire minor league career that happens to support your opinion isn’t really anything but glorified cherry picking.
So we can’t take anything from 400 major league at bats from Bowker.
But we CAN take something out of 300 of Nate Schierholtz’s most recent major league at bats.
And we CAN take something out of 450 of John Bowker’s most recent minor league at bats.
But we CAN’T take anything out of 2000+ total minor league at bats for either player.
I mean, honestly WTF is going on here?
I don't know about that, to the groin.
by howtheyscored on Jan 20, 2010 1:36 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
Dude its not cherry picking. You and I both know that Johnny was sent back down after blowing it in the bigs in 2008. He had a great 2009 in AAA and exceeded all his previous minor league stats. Why shouldn’t we believe he learned something there? Why are you defending Nate? Nate didn’t perform in 2009 just like Bowker didn’t perform in 2008. I mean he was better than Johnny ever has been at the major league level but, like you said, both have been pretty marginal. The absolute ONLY upside here is the fact that Bowker MIGHT have learned something in AAA that would help him succeed in the bigs.
No one here gets out alive.
by Bond16 on Jan 20, 2010 1:46 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
I said glorified cherry picking. And it is. You’re using a sample of at bats to support an opinion when that sample is basically equal to another sample that you’re completely disregarding.
It is tempting to look at Bowker’s 2009 season in AAA and think that something changed. It’s also discouring to see him come up the big club and hack at the same sliders he always hacked at. Sure, something might have changed. On the other hand, maybe he had a hot streak while repeating a level at an advanced age after having already experienced a higher level. It’s not surprising that a player who has had at bats against major league pitching would go back down to AAA and appear to be better than he had been before he ever even saw a major league pitcher.
When you’re talking about 450 at bats, you have to make some pretty big assumptions while disregarding some other pretty compelling evidence to see what you want to see.
Yes, Bowker MIGHT have figured something out. It’s one of many possible conclusions to come to from his 450 at bat 2009 minor league sample.
On the other hand, Todd Linden had a 1.120 OPS in 415 AAA at bats in 2005. He was also 25 that year. He was also repeating AAA after having some time in the majors. He also saw a huge gain in his AAA walk numbers and appeared to have figured something out.
Bowker might be different, but the Linden example should be enough to at least make you cautious.
I don't know about that, to the groin.
by howtheyscored on Jan 20, 2010 2:02 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
Of course I am cautious. I watched most of Johnny’s PAs in 2009 and I agree it was extremely discouraging. But what is the point of running Nate out there again when we know his chances of greatly improving his 2009 performance are slim. CHONE puts him at less than .800 OPS and I pretty much agree with this. Corner outfielders should contribute more than that. I think Nate has real value on the team as a left handed backup outfielder and pinch runner and all-around great guy. My point was that I hope the assumptions he will be our starting RF are wrong. Anyway, I appreciate your input on this as I really needed to see the opposing point of view.
No one here gets out alive.

a 450 at bat sample of his entire minor league career that happens to support your opinion isn’t really anything but glorified cherry picking.
If you’re going to quote things like OPS that have large amounts of sample error in 450 AB’s, sure. The thing about Bowker that’s different, though, is the qualities that generally have a lot smaller sample error like BB% and K% changed, and these things rarely change for anything other than a legtiimate change in skill. So I don’t think it’s accurate to call excitement over a new approach based on changes in peripherals like that cherry picking. Larger sample generally = better, but more recent is more telling than less recent, and a change in skill level (assuming there is one) kind of makes the long ago past obsolete…
by Missing Barry on Jan 21, 2010 10:21 AM PST up reply actions 0 recs
It’s not really the long ago past, though. Bowker was failing to crush the minor leagues as early as one and a half years ago.
I don't know about that, to the groin.
by howtheyscored on Jan 21, 2010 11:32 AM PST up reply actions 0 recs
I’m not huge on Bowker, but what intrigues me about him is the change in skills that normally don’t change (and when they do, suggest a whole new hitter). That is, BB%, K%…those things that correlate highly from year to year because they’re almost entirely skill based…so that may suggest a whole new Bowker.

What we needed:
A veteran catcher who accepts that at this point his role is as a backup and mentor, is known more for defense than offense, and who is willing to step aside and let Posey be the starter, whether that’s when the season starts or a couple of months in. (See: Ausmus, Brad, or one of many catchers in their late 30s, even semi-retired ones.)
What we got:
A veteran catcher who whines and pouts when he’s not the starter and therefore probably does little to no teaching to younger players, who is clinging to a starting role despite offensive stats that look good on the surface but look pretty damn bad just below the surface, and has no interest or intention of stepping aside at any point.

- Do not re-sign Sabean
- Do not re-sign Bochy
- Sign a couple of OBP guys
- Sign a big bat
- Sign a fifth starter
- Make Posey the starting catcher
- Do not trade pitching
Well, 1 of 7 wasn’t bad. YAY GIANTS!!!
I try not to break the rules, but merely to test their elasticity.
