Q: Did you ever make an offer for Vladimir Guerrero?
Sabean: In a word: No. If we had signed Guerrero or [Gary] Sheffield, we would have been without [Long list of replacement level vets]—obviously not being able to field a competitive team, especially from an experience standpoint, given our level of spending.
I wasn’t being serious. I think Posey would be fine. And I think he’d definitely be better than Molina.

There’s no chance he doesn’t bat 4th or 5th.
In the end, America will be remembered for three things: the Bill of Rights, jazz, and baseball.
He will bat 6

Trust me
I understand the importance of it. It’s not the entire picture. And someone who can sit behind homeplate an entire season has an incredibly low offensive requirement. I’m not happy he’s resigned, I’m just saying that the money is right.

I had repressed that memory after years of therapy.
I went to those games. Four game series against the Pirates, who going in were just as bad as the Giants in the standings. Afterwards, the Giants were in dead last. Some klutz missed third base and was called out on appeal. It was so bad that I spotted it sitting in the upper deck. Those were good times. Not really.
I booed Ray Durham once. I was at the game in 2006, I think it was, when the Dodgers clinched a playoff berth at the Phone Booth. The Giants were just embarrassingly flat and unmotivated, given the situation, and Durham allowed a guy to tag and score from third on a pop-up to second. Just… not paying attention. Whoops. I was pretty angry with him.
I don’t like the player. He’s soft and slow, and entirely too temperamental for his talent level.
It's my blarg! Quick Pitch
And I tweet (more often than I blarg).

I didn’t like how he shat bricks when Posey got called up last year. He’s 35 and average. He should know that a 23-year-old top prospect is going to have a far bigger place in his team’s future than he will. It also pisses me off when people consider themselves extremely important to their team, especially when they aren’t actually good.
The very bad man traded my son...So now I'd like you all to meet my new son, Ryan "Aaron" Garko...Dammit it's just not the same!
right but he’s not really backing it up with stellar defense and baserunning.
That said, you’re sorta right. They paid about what Molina’s value would be to an average team, just not what Molina’s marginal value was to them, which is his value over Posey.
Please hit better, Randy Winn.
His value over posey is negative.

Sabean: In a word: No. If we had signed Guerrero or [Gary] Sheffield, we would have been without [Long list of replacement level vets]—obviously not being able to field a competitive team, especially from an experience standpoint, given our level of spending.
Probably
But the Giants FO wasn’t going to have Posey be the starter (yes, I think that’s incredibly stupid), so really it’s the value over Whiteside right now.
Juan Carlos Perez, please start hitting.
The Giants should have sent this 4.5 million to Haiti

A hearty thank you to Rich Aurilia for all the good memories, and to the Niners for finally getting the uni's (mostly) right.
UGH.
I’m so fucking sick of this argument (even though I made it earlier). The team’s insistence on giving inferior players playing time should not be a defense for their signing of players who are equal to / worse than what they already have.

Again, I don’t like the deal, but at least what they did pay is a reasonable amount.
Of course, it’s just another in a long line of small, wasted investments (bookended by two huge, wasted investments).
Juan Carlos Perez, please start hitting.
Why do people obsess about OBP when it comes to Bengie
This is the one guy I DON’T want to see on base that often. If he gets on in 2 out of 10 plate appearances, that’s fine, as long as those two hits drive in runners. I’ll say it once again: Buster needs more time in the minors as he is still learning, and another few months isn’t going to be a bad thing for his development. And would you really rather have Whiteside as the starter going into the season.
by crazedcrustacean on Jan 19, 2010 2:18 PM PST up reply actions
Yea, for some reason i agree with this, his place in the batting order shouldn’t require an OBP that is that good
It’s everyone’s jobs to not make outs, you’re a better offensive player when you don’t. But, even with a .300 OBP, as a catcher, you can be valuable.
Juan Carlos Perez, please start hitting.
Yes, but that actually doesn’t happen as often as you might think. Or, you could just drive in a run without making an out. That works too.
Juan Carlos Perez, please start hitting.
Yeah, but when you’re actively not making not-outs, you’re also actively inhibiting overall run production. There is simply no way around this.

I’d rather just use what happens during the game as a projection… like i said, projections are just a tool to see what MIGHT happen
Okay, then

No, he’s speaking in absolutes is the problem here. Do we know without a shadow of a shadow of a shadow of a doubt that something that is vaguely within the real of possibility and hasn’t happened yet won’t happen? Sure, we don’t know. It’s kind of pointless to play that game, though.

Yes, Bengie Molina could have a .900 OPS this year. It’s possible. We don’t know that he won’t.
And yes, Buster Posey could be a terrible major league baseball player. He could be supremely awful. It’s possible. We don’t know that it won’t be the case.
But we have a pretty damn good idea that neither of those things are true.

see? that’s what i’m looking for, thanks… And here i say, good lord, what the fuck was Sabean thinking? If anything, why would you sign a catcher who has no ceiling… With Posey, he could have gotten the continuity he needed with the pitchers… Plus even though he might have had a down year, it’s better than not playing at all… it’s all a valuable learning experience
We have a pretty good idea about those things based on what happened on the field AND projections.
The Giants Way™"If anybody deserves credit for this year’s turnaround it’s these two people, Brian and Bruce," Neukom said. "The encouraging thing is we think we’re back to playing baseball the way it ought to be played."

I kinda agree, but the rage is going right now. If it weren’t for Bochy’s ability to play the wrong player for months on end, this signing could be viewed as a 2-month placeholder for Posey. But…. but….
RAGE!
The Giants Way™"If anybody deserves credit for this year’s turnaround it’s these two people, Brian and Bruce," Neukom said. "The encouraging thing is we think we’re back to playing baseball the way it ought to be played."
even then,
isn’t the money way too much for a placeholder?
There were better options. Barajas and Torrealba were better options. Molina could easily fall apart and put up a 550 OPS at any second.
Merkin Valdez? Manuel Mateo? A rose by any other name...-----RIP, MY SON
1/4.5 is just no money at all. He’s been pretty consistently a ~2 win player in his career. I wanted Posey to be the catcher, but that was obviously not going to happen. If there’s anything to get mad over, it’s that decision. Once that one was made, 1/4.5 to Molina just really isn’t a bad option.
Juan Carlos Perez, please start hitting.
+1. The decision not to play Posey, especially with the 40 man roster spot and the arb clock ticking, is idiotic. I do not trust Bochy to play him when the time comes.
But if they were going to insist on signing a veteran catcher, yeah, you may have wasted $1-2M over Yorvit or such, but I’m not at all uncomfortable with Molina on a one year deal and I’d argue with. If Posey picks it up, then trade Molina to the Mets or such at the deadline.
As it turns out, the decision not to offer arbitration was genius, when I thought it was stupid. Probably saved $2-4M.
Brett Pill - .302/.359/.849 at the graveyard for hitters known as Dodd, .996 fielding percentage led all EL 1B (so much for his 'defensive issues' that someone posted'), probably should have been EL MVP (finished 2nd to Cleveland's top prospect), and nary a staff mention on MCC outside of Minor Lines and almost no fanposts!
bleh, that’s supposed to be “argue with the assumption that Barajas or Torrealba being better options.”

My anger is largely based on the fact that, with Bochy as our manager, Molina will play everyday as long as he is on the roster.
Merkin Valdez? Manuel Mateo? A rose by any other name...-----RIP, MY SON
Correct me if I’m wrong, but I thought if Posey started the season in the minors and was down there for awhile it would delay his arb clock. Is that not the case?
We're all basically Pedro Feliz.
It is
He needs to be in the minors for about 2 months to delay his clock another year. That HAS to happen now.
Juan Carlos Perez, please start hitting.
But the 4.5M is a lot more than they would have had to pay equivalent options like Barajas or Torrealba.
WAR doesn’t factor in baserunning or catcher defense. Take those runs away from Bengie’s WAR, and he’s pretty much replacement level. He has no value whatsoever.
Let's Play a Lineup Game!
The Kids: Lewis, Posey, Sandoval, Bowker, Schierholtz, Frandsen, Ishikawa, Amezaga
Sabean's Vets: Rowand, Sanchez, DeRosa, Sandoval, Huff, Renteria, Schierholtz, Posey
The Kids' CHONE WAR projection= 12.7
Sabean's Vets' CHONE War projection= 13.5
Pretty much this. I think he’s probably really worth half a win or so, but basically he’s a $4.5M replacement player.
My calculation is: fangraphs’ WAR = 2 – 0.5 runs (baserunning) – 1 run (defense).
Yeah, but what you’re not taking into account is the fact that you can’t hurt your team with your baserunning when you don’t get on base in the first place. :)

Not a bad deal in a vacuum
And I understand that Sabean’s probably trying to “go for it.”
But it’s still blegh considering the Posey situation.

Proud father of Barry Zito. As long as he keeps throwing strikes, that is.
I wonder if Buster will start the season as the back up catcher in the bigs so there is no silver lining with his arb clock

well, if you're gonna play "FAIL", you might as well go all the way

Hopefully we can delay his arb
even though this year he would be the 2nd or 3rd best hitter on the team (depending on how DeRosa does)

I’d rather not make the playoffs this year and have 6 more full seasons of cost controlled Posey than not make the playoffs this year and only have 5 more seasons of cost controlled Posey (which wouldn’t include his cheapest season)…

Dodgers fans are rejoicing.
In the end, America will be remembered for three things: the Bill of Rights, jazz, and baseball.
Dodger fans are laughing their asses off right now.
Much like we would’ve been had the Mets signed Molinagoo.
Somehow I blame the Rockies for this. They messed up the Yorvit negotiations.
Yorvit messed them up
