Around SBN: NFL Players Ready To Welcome Gay Teammate

I hate Scott Hairston!

I hate him more than anyone in baseball.  I hate seeing his ugly face as he celebrates his thirteenth game winning hit of the season against the Giants, while I try to resist the urge to gouge my eyes out with a rusty crab pick before hurling myself into the mouth of a volcano for a refreshing lava bath.  His at bats are like watching a python digesting the family shih-tzu.  You know you should walk away and grieve but you can’t help but watch while praying that somehow Muffy can escape unharmed, then next thing you know its first row, game over and hope you enjoy my middle finger Giants fans as I round third base in triumph.

Scott Hairston is like the mold that grows on the bottom of the toilet, or a hoard of locusts in the outfield.  He’s worse then being attacked by fire ants at the family picnic, or coming down with ebola on your honeymoon.  He’s an evil wicked monster of mass Giant destruction who should be welded into an air tight container and launched somewhere in the direction of Jupiter so future generations never have to suffer again.  So yes, I hate Scott Hairston.  I hated him with the Dbacks, I hated him with the Padres, and I was fully prepared to hate him with the A’s for six meaningless games this season.

But then the A’s had to do the unthinkable, and trade him back to the Padres, guaranteeing 18 fun filled games this season of heart attack inducing torture.  Once again, the A’s had to give a gift to a team in the NL West for garbage in return.  Screw you for Haren, screw you for Ethier and now, here’s a hearty FU for shoving Hairston back up our asses.  So have fun enjoying your last place season A’s fans, since you certainly deserve it for this one.  And welcome back to the division Scott Hairston.  I hope you take a sinking line drive off the nads, complements of all Giants fans who hate the sight of you.

Actually, go back and read the thread when there were rumors that the Giants might get Kouzmanoff, to see how “highly” we think of him. I’m no Aubrey Huff fan, but I’ll take him over Kouz anyday. At least he’s had some kind of success at some points of his career.

Yeah, he hasn’t been bad. He also hasn’t posted an OPS over .800 and only once was above .735. Huff is certainly the more volatile performer, but he also has been at least as good offensively as Kouz on aggregate. I’d rather have Huff for one year, than Kouz for two or more.

Of course, none of this includes Kouz’ defense, which is certainly better. It also doesn’t include the fact that Huff didn’t cost talent anything but money to acquire. In a vacuum, on one-year deals, I would take Kouz. In the current siutation, Huff. Remember, Hairston would be practically deserving of a starting spot in our outfield.

In the end, America will be remembered for three things: the Bill of Rights, jazz, and baseball.

by cornball on Jan 16, 2010 3:14 PM PST up reply actions

The low OPS is clearly influenced by Petco though – he has been an average hitter the last two years despite OPSs in the .720 range.

Yes I would

I would prefer a good player coming off of a bad year over a player who’s bad, period. If Huff continues to decline, he’s signed to a one year 3 million dollar deal and he can easily be replaced. What’s happened to Billy Beane? Trading for a player who walked 27 times in 550 at bats? I would think the last GM in baseball that would want Kouzmanoff is Billy Beane.

Kouz really isn’t bad, period. He’s been about a 2.8 WAR player the last three years. He certainly looks awful on the surface, but remember that his .722 OPS was good for a 100 OPS+ in a Petco environment. He’s a very good defensive player.

Kouzmanoff is no doubt better than Huff and anyone who disagrees is probably trolling A’s fans or has fan-blinders on.

That said, Huff costs only $3 million for one year, while Kouzmanoff took a solid major league player and a good prospect to acquire.

Why do I feel like you’re judging him solely on the basis of his major league performance this year? He’s a solid prospect – was rated as a “B” by Sickels before last season and had an okay season in 2009. He’s about a B or B- prospect – Giants prospects rated similarly are Thomas Neal, Zack Wheeler, Roger Kieshnick, Dan Runzler, Tommy Joseph, etc. Would you be happy if the Giants traded any of those guys for Kouzmanoff? Say, Nate Schierholtz and Thomas Neal?

Big difference

Who do we have after Nate and Neal? That would leave Bowker and Kieshnick as the only legit OF options.Maybe Velez wouldbe in the mix.
I believe Oakland made this deal to clear a spot for Michael Taylor. They also seems to have Travis Buck who is like their version of Bowker waiting for a chance. Eric Patterson who is comparable with Velez.

…but I liked what I saw of Darren Ford down in San Jose last season.

by PositionPlayerProd on Jan 19, 2010 10:47 PM PST up reply actions

The difference

As I see it… is the A’s have several outfielders in the big leagues or near the big leagues. If you buy the notion that Chris Carter can be serviceable in the outfield Cunningham just got demoted to “tied for career backup” without the trade.

On absolute value, I think the A’s traded more than they got… but they were trading from strength to fill weakness. And it isn’t like the Padres just ran away with huge value here.
