OT: Donations for Haiti Earthquake Victims
[Making this a FanPost just to give it exposure higher on up on the home page...]
I wish I could focus on Giants baseball today, but I can't. I made a donation to this wonderful organization today, and there are many other worthy relief organizations (Red Cross, UNICEF, etc.) who need donations to help the people of Haiti during this terrible time.
I'm sure many of you have given already, and if you haven't, please consider doing so. Even small donations help.

I’m now unemployed, and it looks like our movers incurred upwards of thousands of dollars on our personal possessions, so I can’t do much – but I’m going to try to scrounge up at least a few dollars.

Yup. I just heard about that an hour ago, and it hurt.
I have a home. i don’t own it, but the walls and the roof are intact and no one in my family is lying hurt or worse in a place with inadequate medical facilities.
I’ll find some money.

I just did this- works very well. After you text “Haiti” (I don’t think caps matter) to 90999, you get a confirmation text which tells you to reply “YES”, after which you get a confirmation text that your donation went through. Went very smoothly and took all of 10 seconds. Glad to see technology being put to such a good use.
I heard a bit on NPR last night that said your best bet was still online donating.
Because those text donations, for some odd reason, can take up to 90 days to be turned into applicable fundage.

I’ve always donated through the Red Cross. They do say though “make sure to write Haiti Earthquake Relief” on your check. Other wise I guess it just goes into a general fund.
Something our elementary school did after 9/11 was to just put a coffee can in each classroom, the children brought what they could, staff kicked in a bit more and we raised around $500, not bad for a low income school like ours.
Pass
Mostly because I’m a student without any money, but also because I’m a heartless, avaricious moneygrubber conservative.

Not really
They’re both on the island of Hispaniola, so if a quake hits Haiti it probably hits the DR too (though not necessarily as hard). Earthquakes don’t stop at border lines; they don’t even have passports.
I think you fell into the chasm
or at least I hope you did.

I’d recommend throwing in a couple bucks to Partners in Health. They’ve been on the ground doing wonderful work in Haiti for a while now, and I hope all their staff is safe. If you haven’t read Mountains Beyond Mountains, check it out. It’s about Paul Farmer, one of the founders of PIH and his work in Haiti. One of the more life changing books I’ve ever read.
From NPR's article on the disaster, and how it was amplified:
For instance, how does a city made for a population perhaps the tenth of the size or less become a sprawling, largely impoverished metropolis of two or three million housed mostly in shoddy shelters on a known seismic fault line?
Sound familiar?
Get out, Wilriv!

Another way to support Doctors Without Borders
Not to stray off topic (Haiti relief), but Kitspool mentions the very worthwhile charity Doctors Without Borders as being his choice of charity to support, and you music geeks out there should know that there’s a fantastic, reasonably priced 5-CD compilation that packages a bunch of artists you dig (Antony and the Johnsons, Sonic Youth, Devendra Banhart, Bonnie Prince Billy to name a few) with others you will enjoy checking out (The Bevis Frond, Matmos, Six Organs of Admittance, Current 93).
The CD boxset is called Not Alone and benefits this very noble charity.

Really sad.
I’ve been on foreign countries where they don’t have many earthquakes, and most of the buildings are concrete or cement block. That’s why there are/will be so many deaths and injuries because of this quake. Those buildings just absolutely fall apart.
Sad, sad.
Q: Did you ever make an offer for Vladimir Guerrero?
Sabean: In a word: No. If we had signed Guerrero or [Gary] Sheffield, we would have been without [Long list of replacement level vets]—obviously not being able to field a competitive team, especially from an experience standpoint, given our level of spending.
Red Cross and Unicef
…are my charities of choice and I made a donation yesterday. Please do what you can…every donation helps.
Whether you can afford to make a donation or not, please use Facebook, MySpace and Twitter to get the word out.
Unfortunately, Pat Robertson reached new levels of douchebaggery with his proclamation that Haiti “made a pact with the devil” and I’m fearful this will keep morons from helping and literally cost lives.
Wyclef Jean and the dude who plays “The Haitian” on “Heroes” are both doing a lot to help their home country.

I’ll throw in $5 to UNICEF. It’s really all I can swing right now, but it’s more than these people have.
And I love that MLB kicked in a million via UNICEF. Right the fuck on.

HEY GUYS
Stop giving them money because Pat Robertson says they made a pact with the devil and that’s why they had the earthquake! If they would all just turn to Jesus instead of being awful devil-worshipers this never would have happened, it’s entirely their fault!
doesn't matter which charity you give to
as long as it is legit and them money is going toward’s the correct cause. i kinda wish i was out there on the front lines helping
Well, take whatever steps you can to make sure your patootie is covered in case of a natural disaster in your very own neighborhood.
You guys have that hanging over you every day.
How do you deal with it?

Earthquakes?
We only get one that you can really feel every couple months, im not really all that scared of them. The buildings around here are much stronger than in Haiti.

When I lived in the Bay Area, basically on top of the Hayward Fault, I just made sure I was prepared. Water heaters and whatnot bolted/velcroed down so they wouldn’t move. Nothing huge, breakable or heavy where it could fall on me in bed. All my glassware in lower cabinets in the kitchen with latches on the doors (I also knew that in my cheapo apartment that in a big quake the kitchen cabinets would most likely end up on the floor).
When I moved to Sac I didn’t worry about that kind of stuff, but I still kept my emergency kit stocked and updated (food, water, first aid stuff, clothing, flashlights, radio, batteries, lightsticks, medications, collapsible cat carrier, gloves, tools etc) in a rolling back pack cuz’ here there be floods.
