Huff to bat cleanup
A surprise? Well, I guess not. I'm a nice guy and I try to assume the best intentions are motivating other people, but this decision would just be...ugh. Why, Bochy? Why?

I should probably note that I’m not against Sandoval moving to the 3 slot (I agree with that), but Huff as a “legitimate cleanup presence” just sounds depressing. I have my doubts that he can outperform Bengie in this role.
I guess this means I’m not an optimist when it comes to Huff making a comeback. And I tried so hard to avoid pessimism this offseason.
I'm as tall as Mel - why can't I hit 500 home runs?
If DeRosa is healthy I would rather him hit #1 or #2. Put that OBP at the top.

Huff will be better than bengie, I’m sure.

Jonathan Sanchez would be better than Bengie.

I know it gets lost in the fact that Bengie was a horrific choice for cleanup last year but compare their lines. Bengie hit .265/.285/.442 for an OPS+ of 86. Aubrey Huff hit .241/.310/.384 for an OPS+ of 81.
Yes, Huff has a much better career line, and as long as he regresses back toward that he’ll be better than Bengie in 2010. But he also might be done – several of his comps tanked right around his age.

Well, outside of Sandoval, it’s not like our other options are clearly better or anything…so I’ll just choose to be mad that it’s 2010 and we still haven’t found anything resembling a decent hitter for 1B, and we’re still using bums like Aubrey Huff in the middle of our lineup. Thank you, Brian Sabean. Also, Aubrey Huff sucks.
For now, I’m fine with it. I’d prefer Sandoval hit third actually and while I don’t think Huff will bounce all the way back, he’s really as good an initial bet for the cleanup role as anyone else. Now, maybe after he doesn’t do so great for half a season while Buster sets the world on fire, then we could bat Posey third and Sandoval fourth, but for now I think this is actually an ok way to go.
So the presumed lineup looks something like:
Sanchez
DeRosa
Sandoval
Huff
Rowand
Schierholtz
Renteria
Posey
… I can live with that to start. I mean, other than Renteria being in the lineup at all, it’s not really epically stupid.

close
but I’m guessing that Rowand will be in the leadoff spot with Sanchez #2 and DeRosa #5.

No need to guess, that’s what Bochy said he invisioned as of today.

FTA
Presumed lineup:
–The top five hitters, as Bochy sees it today: Aaron Rowand, Freddy Sanchez, Pablo Sandoval, Aubrey Huff, Mark DeRosa. Bochy said he prefers to have his best all-around hitter batting third, and because Huff is viewed as a legitimate cleanup presence, the skipper is happy he can bump up Sandoval to third and guarantee him an at-bat in the first inning.
That's actualy a decent lineup.
Best 5 hitters in the top 5 spots, that’s all you can ask for.
Ignoring Lewis, of course.

Because both those guys have better major league hitting track record than Huff.

Call me when Either plays SS.
I notice that Renteria wasn’t in his mock lineup, though. The silver lining of the Huff singing is that increases the chances of Uribe becoming the starting SS.

Everyone on the team has a better track record than 2009 Huff!

–Bochy said right field is an open competition. Nate Schierholtz and John Bowker were mentioned. Lewis was not.
Since Velez wasn’t mentioned I’d assume he isn’t considered part of the competition as some around here thought. Thank goodness.

Exhibit #154682
On why one shouldn’t trust a word that Bochy and Sabean tell the media. They always change their minds.
Someone might retort that they didn’t know two months ago that they would have Huff to bat cleanup – then don’t make the proclamation four months before the season starts!
Hope everybody is ready for Velez in RF.

To be fair to Sabean, if I was a GM, I would constantly feed the media BS, too. There’s really not much reason to tell them the truth. I’d give all canned answers, no insights whatsoever….
To a degree, I do know Sabean does this on purpose. Unfortunately, if you read carefully enough, you can still see all the little things that show he just doesn’t get it.

WHO WAS DFA'D?
They needed to make a spot on the 40 man roster to add Huff. Anyone know?
Why isn't Sabean held accountable for leading the Giants into many years of mediocrity???

I don’t think they needed to DFA anyone for Uribe.

Pablo needs to get DOWN to 250?
Man, I am a thick, heavy legged 6-1 guy and I am not close to 250. Pablo is FAT.
Q: Did you ever make an offer for Vladimir Guerrero?
Sabean: In a word: No. If we had signed Guerrero or [Gary] Sheffield, we would have been without [Long list of replacement level vets]—obviously not being able to field a competitive team, especially from an experience standpoint, given our level of spending.

Im not against this. I actually support it. Sandoval will get more at-bats batting third, and Huff is not a good cleanup hitter, but he is the best on this team.

Couldn’t we, for the sake of our collective sanity, just refer to it as the #4 hitter? No reason to use the term “clean-up hitter” is there? Maybe it won’t seem so bad that way.
Maybe they should be referred to as
No. 2 hitters.

What really cracks me up
Is all the people I’m hearing call KNBR today bitching about Sandoval not batting cleanup, not because Huff is terrible, but because batting your best hitter 3rd instead of 4th is some sort of atrocity.
