McGwire used 'roids? No Way!
Well, duh. While I appreciate his (much belated) honesty, it still sounds like he's not quite taking full responsibility when he says "Looking back, I wish I had never played during the steroid era." Like somehow he just HAD to take them.
Whatever.
For the record: I really don't care that guys took 'em. Everybody was dirty then. But don't pick out only certain individuals to vilify.

This x108.

nah I don’t care quite that much, almost though

Yeah
I really don’t like Roger Clemens. But, regardless of the revelation that he took steroids, he was the best pitcher of my generation.
The baseball Satanist
I'm waiting for the Pujols shoe to drop.
I know it’s unfair, but that is the way things are now.
Also, I don’t really care who does steroids. Also, I don’t care about stats or the HOF anymore. I like following quality baseball. Why am I a Giants fan?

“I’m sure people will wonder if I could have hit all those home runs had I never taken steroids,” McGwire said. “I had good years when I didn’t take any, and I had bad years when I didn’t take any. I had good years when I took steroids, and I had bad years when I took steroids. But no matter what, I shouldn’t have done it and for that I’m truly sorry.”

Does this help or hurt his HOF chances? I’m leaning toward help, but probably not enough to make him a lock with the voters.
I don't know about that, to the groin.
I think it will help, but that might just be because I want it to.
Juan Carlos Perez, please start hitting.
I wonder if this is because HE thinks it will.

I agree
A hearty thank you to Rich Aurilia for all the good memories, and to the Niners for finally getting the uni's (mostly) right.
good for him for coming clean
I wonder if Bonds will ever do this. I suppose he’s in a position where he can’t really, because it would in essence incriminate himself. But good for McGwire. Every major star that does this proves a little more that Barry isn’t some super-villain. He was a very good player who became the best of the best when a lot of people were using roids. Not a good choice, but understandable given the context.

I hope Bonds comes clean eventually
I say put his ego and pride to the side and free his heart of the guilt and lies. More than likely he’ll be forgiven eventually and improve his hall of fame chances
Gimme a break. He didn’t do anything wrong. If they have a problem, fuck ‘em. Anybody worth a shit still knows he’s the best, and that’s all that matters.

What I'd like Barry to say
“I did this for the benefit of everyone else. For the entertainment for the fans. For the pocketbooks of the owners. To help my team win as much as we can. The only person really hurt in all of this is me, who may (although it’s very debatable) have health issues later in life because of what I did to my body. And all I want is a thank you. Well?”
The Giants Way™"If anybody deserves credit for this year’s turnaround it’s these two people, Brian and Bruce," Neukom said. "The encouraging thing is we think we’re back to playing baseball the way it ought to be played."
Thank you.

Yes, I would be ok with an admittance that came with no apology.

It would have been nice if he had said this years ago, instead of right before he was about to become a hitting coach for the Cardinals. It feels like an admission out of necessity, rather than any true soul-searching.
"Those that drink the Kool-Aid, please leave the room."
it wasn't time to come clean then
now he IS here to talk about the past.
Giants pitching coach Dave Righetti. "I treat Timmy differently from most pitchers: I leave him alone."
Mychael Urban: Wow. Probably Dye at this point. Good outfielder, could adapt to RF at AT&T, good RBI guy.

And also if he hadn’t lied for 10 years (and everybody – except LaRussa – knew it).

He hit home runs off of pitchers who were on the juice. Level playing field. This whole thing is stupid.

I remember the SNL skit regarding the McGwire-Congress meeting
Big Mac: “You asked me that question 5 seconds ago so technically it was in the past, and I am not here to talk about the past.”
Sosa: “No speaka English.”
Win the inning.
"The list"
Up next? Jim “my face expanded to a home plate shape” Thome.
now skeeter, he ain't hurtin' nobody.
What a bitch. I just lost all the respect I had for McGwire, and I had a ton. He should have continued to give the media the finger for the way they’ve handled this situation. The way the media has covered steroids has been disgraceful at best, dishonest to the core, and still continues to spread flat out lies, untruths, and completely ridiculous viewpoints to the general population. They don’t deserve an apology, or an admission. Here’s to Bonds never admitting to anything. Barry Bonds knows what he did and did not do, and God knows what he did not do, and that’s good enough.
I totally agree. Die on your feet, don’t live on your knees.

I want to know what year he started taking them. It obviously was way earlier than 98.
Obviously no one is shocked. LaRussa had to have known. I’m pretty sure Rene Lachmann who was the A’s Bench Coach back during that run has said things in the past about knowing about Canseco’s use of roids. They would have had to have known about McGwire as well.
This entire era just makes me appreciate past greats like Mays, Ruth, Gehrig, Williams, Robinson and Mantle just that much more. Some will argue those guys had their own advantages and what not, and that may be true to some small extent, but it’s clear steroids really was the biggest influence over numbers that we’ve seen so far. Average players became great players (Luis Gonzalez, Brady Anderson, Ken Caminiti) and great players became legendary, we’ve never seen numbers like this before (Bonds, Clemens, McGwire, Sosa etc).
There is an outstanding chance that if given the opportunity, all those players you mentioned would have taken steroids if it meant either improving their game or keeping them competitive with the countless others who were taking steroids (if they played in this era).

I believe it was Bob Gibson who said something like: “I’d like to say I would have said no to steroids, but that wouldn’t be honest.”

Tweets: “Mark admitting mistakes & explaining circumstances fit high opinion I & teammates hold Read/listen w/open mind & form own opinion”
Explaining circumstances? Like that somehow sets him apart from the other PED users? I don’t think so. LaRussa just trying to find a way to justify his blind devotion over the years (and to cover his likely knowledge or suspicion of the use).
Remind me again why Bonds is the bad guy?
