This move makes no sense.
Am I wrong or is Huff’s 2009 line Garko’s worst case scenario?

I’m still not convinced that Posey will be in the majors this year.
Why isn't Sabean held accountable for leading the Giants into many years of mediocrity???
I really don’t think they have the money to sign anyone else.
I suppose they could go with Whiteside though.
Matt Cain: He'll save children, but not the Dodger children.

Not True
If they had enough money to sign LaRoche, and they only partially used some of that to sign Huff, they should have enough left over to get a catcher, theoretically.
Why isn't Sabean held accountable for leading the Giants into many years of mediocrity???
Maybe they didn't have enough for laroche

but if that’s the case, why sign Huff now? Why not wait another month and see if LaRoche’s demands come down?

Because Uribe/Huff Were Both Ready To Decide
The Giants could have concluded that money wasn’t the issue with LaRoche but rather he just didn’t want to play in SF and thus no point in waiting.

Why
I did read that he didn’t want to come to SF somewhere. That’s not uncommon apparently, especially amongst left handed hitters who fancy themselves power hitters.
If we sign a catcher,
Buster Posey, see you in 2011. Enjoy beautiful Fresno, California. There’s no way the pay a catcher to come in and then end up on the bench two months of three months in. He’ll split time with Whiteside all year.

DH
I’m glad the Giants play in the AL, or otherwise, they’d have no place to play Huff. He’s a great pick up for the vacant DH spot in the batting order.
I’m still looking forward to their new Rover/Leadoff Hitter. Maybe Adam LaRoche can fit that bill.

By significantly I just meant like in the statistical sense. He’s enough below average that there’s no question that it’s not just a small sample size and bad luck, he really is bad. But I didn’t mean he’s MUCH worse than average, which I thought should have been clear from the context, where I said he’s not in Adam Dunn territory.

Even ignoring that, in the three years before 2008, Huff put up 0.3, 1.2 and 0.8 WAR per year. That’s not very good.

I’m pretty sure this won’t be a Renteria-esque signing, and really I don’t understand why they couldn’t just wait a while and see if LaRoche’s price would come down or if Delgado is healthy. All other things being equal though, I’d rather see Huff bat than Ishi.

It’s fairly old for a old player skills 1B/DH type. I think he’ll probably bounce back, but we’re not going to get another 2008 out of him.

what?
I thought the first skill to decline generally was range, in which case a 1B/DH type would age better than other positions.

Bill James used to talk about guys with “old player skills” (ie ‘big bopper’ types who aren’t very athletic) as being more likely to decline quickly than more athletic players. I’m fairly sure that 1B don’t age better than more athletic positions.

If a $3 million and one year contract means Sabean is done kickin’ tires, I am happy.
It is a low risk, relatively high upside signing that means Pablo stays at third, Uribe could possibly be our SS, and there is no commitment beyond 2010.
I disagree about the high upside.
Q: Did you ever make an offer for Vladimir Guerrero?
Sabean: In a word: No. If we had signed Guerrero or [Gary] Sheffield, we would have been without [Long list of replacement level vets]—obviously not being able to field a competitive team, especially from an experience standpoint, given our level of spending.

Just add them all together to get the best estimate. Throw a little bit of regression in (just a touch) for the sake of regression, throw a little bit in for age, and poof – you have your forecast.

Left fielders are bad. Lewis wasn’t a good fielder, he was just a good fielder for a left fielder. It seems to me that if you take a generic average baseball player (and no one fits the bill quite like Derosa), it shouldn’t be a surprise if he puts up +10 in LF. Raul Ibanez, Manny Ramirez, and Adam Dunn really bring down the curve for everyone.

I’d say +8-10 is probably a fair forecast. I mean….his numbers so far have been really good, we can’t just just ignore that. Fans scouting report doesn’t seem to give us anything useful to compare it to – it doesn’t seem to break out positions so I think it treats DeRosa as an IF….

And I’m just eyeballing things so I could be off by a bit – obviously that’s one of the many reasons we regress things, so I’m not sure what the exact amount it should be regressed is, but given his totals are as high as they are, and a sample size that isn’t huge but still big enough to tell us a decent amount….I mean….that’s what the data’s telling us, he’s really good. Also, I can’t emphasize enough how bad corner OF’s as a whole are defensively….

Honestly, you’re gonna look at a piece of, a TV? And say this guy, this guy is going to throw me this way? No, he might throw you a different way! Who cares? Just see it and hit it!

Jermichael?
Come on, the Jets have a guy named D’Brickashaw Ferguson!
I really like this signing...
The downside is not big. 1-year, $3 million is reasonable. It’s not going to lock up the Giants or block anyone overwhelming now, or obviously past this season. In fact, it’s low enough that the Giants could replace him if he sucks midseason without much of a loss.
The upside is good. Forget the 2008 season…it’s as much statistical variance as the 2009 season was the other way. But if he hits .280 with 20 home runs, his career average, he’ll be an improvement and a good player.
It’s no blockbuster signing, but I think it’s a smart one with more upside risk than downside. In this free agent market, that’s been a hard move to come by.

These moves this season allows the Giants to acquire somebody midseason at any position. Also it allows the Giants to acquire one more bat if it comes cheaply at any position.

None Of These Options Your Suggest Have A 4 WAR Upside
by giantsrainman on Jan 10, 2010 11:30 PM PST up reply actions
I think you’d be hard pressed to say Huff really does, too. He’s 33, and that 4 WAR came almost completely from a 15% HR/FB rate – something he has no chance of even coming close to as a LHH in AT&T. Check out his 2007 line – his peripherals are pretty much the exact same as 2008 – K%, BB%, BABIP….the difference is almost entirely the HR"s…..
There’s a reason CHONE projects him for .6 WAR in almost a full season (103 wRC+) – the data strongly points away from this “4 WAR upside”. It’s extremely unlikely – so unlikely, I think you really can make a case a couple of those other guys I named (let’s throw Bowker in there, too) have a similar chance at 4 WAR….that is, not 0, but certainly close.

Underwhelming if anything
Would prefer just playing Ishikawa over him, so we essentially added yet another gritty veteran with positional flexibility for 3 mill for 1 year, which isn’t bad. It upgrades our bench at the very least. But I’m not sure how Huff is any better than Bowker or Nate or Ishikawa. Oh wait, he’s not. Meh.
Why we didn’t go after Glaus, I’ll never know.
Or even Guzman or Garko. Huff’s level of production should be so easy to find somewhere else…it just doesn’t make sense. Sure, he might be worth 1 yr/$3M, and same with Uribe…but those little deals thrown at the veterans, along with the crappy deals thrown at veterans like Renteria, really add up, and eventually we can’t afford Matt Holliday because of it. Not to mention the fact that we’re getting at most a tiny upgrade from what we should be able to produce internally….
