Not True

If they had enough money to sign LaRoche, and they only partially used some of that to sign Huff, they should have enough left over to get a catcher, theoretically.

I’m glad the Giants play in the AL, or otherwise, they’d have no place to play Huff. He’s a great pick up for the vacant DH spot in the batting order.

He’s significantly below average. He’s not historically awful like Dunn or something, but both UZR and the fan scouting reports think he’s bad defensively.

by taliesin on Jan 11, 2010 9:50 AM PST up reply actions

By significantly I just meant like in the statistical sense. He’s enough below average that there’s no question that it’s not just a small sample size and bad luck, he really is bad. But I didn’t mean he’s MUCH worse than average, which I thought should have been clear from the context, where I said he’s not in Adam Dunn territory.

Even ignoring that, in the three years before 2008, Huff put up 0.3, 1.2 and 0.8 WAR per year. That’s not very good.

Left fielders are bad. Lewis wasn’t a good fielder, he was just a good fielder for a left fielder. And I’m just eyeballing things so I could be off by a bit – obviously that’s one of the many reasons we regress things, so I’m not sure what the exact amount it should be regressed is, but given his totals are as high as they are, and a sample size that isn’t huge but still big enough to tell us a decent amount….I mean….that’s what the data’s telling us, he’s really good. Also, I can’t emphasize enough how bad corner OF’s as a whole are defensively….

I vote Jermichael because

it starts with “Germ”

Q: Did you ever make an offer for Vladimir Guerrero?
Sabean: In a word: No. If we had signed Guerrero or [Gary] Sheffield, we would have been without [Long list of replacement level vets]—obviously not being able to field a competitive team, especially from an experience standpoint, given our level of spending.

I think I’ve seen a JerMarcus before. I can’t remember if that was it, exactly, but it was definitely a Jer-something that was worse than Jermichael….

Are you implying that JaMarcus is worse than DaMarcus or LaMarcus?

One of the announcer’s today called him the most athletic tight end in football. I think VD might have something to say about that.

Vernon just tied the single season touchdown record for tight ends. If you don’t know who he is, then you probably shouldn’t be announcing a football game.

Fwiw, Finley ran a 4.84 at the combine.

You have to excuse those two. They weren’t really paying attention to the game. They were both imagining next week when they get to do Dallas at Minnesota.

I really like this signing...

The downside is not big. 1-year, $3 million is reasonable. It’s not going to lock up the Giants or block anyone overwhelming now, or obviously past this season. In fact, it’s low enough that the Giants could replace him if he sucks midseason without much of a loss.

The upside is good. Forget the 2008 season…it’s as much statistical variance as the 2009 season was the other way. But if he hits .280 with 20 home runs, his career average, he’ll be an improvement and a good player.

It’s no blockbuster signing, but I think it’s a smart one with more upside risk than downside. In this free agent market, that’s been a hard move to come by.

pretty much this

These moves this season allows the Giants to acquire somebody midseason at any position. Also it allows the Giants to acquire one more bat if it comes cheaply at any position.

Like Jermaine Dye.

Except we would be in almost the exact same position if we had just used the options we already have internally. Or went searching for some AAA-lifer who may or may not be good enough for the pros but hasn’t ever really gotten a chance. There’s just no reason to make this signing.

by Missing Barry on Jan 10, 2010 11:16 PM PST up reply actions

I think you’d be hard pressed to say Huff really does, too. He’s 33, and that 4 WAR came almost completely from a 15% HR/FB rate – something he has no chance of even coming close to as a LHH in AT&T. Check out his 2007 line – his peripherals are pretty much the exact same as 2008 – K%, BB%, BABIP….the difference is almost entirely the HR"s…..

There’s a reason CHONE projects him for .6 WAR in almost a full season (103 wRC+) – the data strongly points away from this “4 WAR upside”. It’s extremely unlikely – so unlikely, I think you really can make a case a couple of those other guys I named (let’s throw Bowker in there, too) have a similar chance at 4 WAR….that is, not 0, but certainly close.

No way does Ishi have a 20% chance to produce 4 WAR. More like less then 10% chance.

Well I think you aren’t doing enough to account for age and you aren’t properly weighting performance based on how recently it was achieved.

From a baseball standpoint, there is just no reason this team should have signed Aubrey Huff. He’s maybe the 2039480328 best option available….

/throws “veteran experience” into the Sabean formula, desirability increases fivefold

by dregarx on Jan 10, 2010 11:16 PM PST up reply actions

Underwhelming if anything

Would prefer just playing Ishikawa over him, so we essentially added yet another gritty veteran with positional flexibility for 3 mill for 1 year, which isn’t bad. It upgrades our bench at the very least. But I’m not sure how Huff is any better than Bowker or Nate or Ishikawa. Oh wait, he’s not. Meh.

Why we didn’t go after Glaus, I’ll never know.

by Hobbes2d on Jan 10, 2010 10:57 PM PST reply actions

Or even Guzman or Garko. Huff’s level of production should be so easy to find somewhere else…it just doesn’t make sense. Sure, he might be worth 1 yr/$3M, and same with Uribe…but those little deals thrown at the veterans, along with the crappy deals thrown at veterans like Renteria, really add up, and eventually we can’t afford Matt Holliday because of it. Not to mention the fact that we’re getting at most a tiny upgrade from what we should be able to produce internally….
