Giants sign Aubrey Huff?

http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/profile?playerId=4479

Under player news it says we signed Huff to a 1 year deal for 3 mil. Interesting deal if true. Probably means DeRosa will play in LF to start the year, which means Velez off the bench. Not bad for 1 year and 3 million...

It’s even weirder (if true) when you consider that they didn’t tender Garko a contract so that they could sign .. Aubrey Huff?

Not Any Worse Then Garko On Defense.

Both are career -4 ish UZR/150 at 1B. i can see the logic the Giants are following here. They can platoon Huff with Uribe by flip flopping Sandoval between 3B and 1B. I am not a fan of this but I can understand it.

by giantsrainman on Jan 10, 2010 7:33 PM PST up reply actions

Flip-flopping a player between two players doesn’t seem like a very productive set-up, especially not when they could have just kept Garko.

The Prefered A Lefthanded Bat To Platoon With Uribe

Garko was a righthanded bat to platoon with Ishi and this is not the direction they wanted to go. They could of just kept Garko to platoon with Huff but they decided that Uibe’s positional flexibility was more desirable then Garko’s bat. Not sure I agree but I do understand.

by giantsrainman on Jan 10, 2010 9:23 PM PST up reply actions

Just Seeing The Evidence Unfold

When DeRosa was signed he was asked if the meant Panda would move to 1B and he replied that Pablo would still play a lot of 3B (implying some 1B too). We Uribe was re-signed he was again asked the same question and again gave the same answer. Both Huff and Uribe are signed to $3M / 1Yr contracts implying more then a bench role but less then a full time role for both. To me it is hard not to see Platoon written all over this.

“SOURCE: GIANTS SIGN AUBREY HUFF

Quick blog here…got a tip from a source that the Giants have signed left-handed first baseman Aubrey Huff to a one-year, $3 million contract. That will almost surely set the Giants line-up for 2010 with Pablo remaining at third base. Kim Coyle reported yesterday that the Giants were still talking with Adam LaRoche, but my source now says that deal is dead, but can’t say for sure. Huff stumbled last season to .241, 15, 85, but if he can return to his numbers of 2008 (32, 108, .304) this could be a steal. Stay tuned."

Winn was coming off OPS+ years of 104 and 105. Did anyone see his drop to 75 coming? Similarly, Renteria’s production was far worse than what most of us were expecting. Those two guys probably double-handedly sunk the team’s chances last year.

As far as Schierholtz being worse than Winn’s 2009, I suppose it’s possible, but at least there’s Bowker as a Plan B.

Looking back at the community projections, I had Renteria and Winn both kind of sucking, but not as badly as they ended up doing.

On the other hand, I thought Bengie would be even worse than he was.

It’s annoying because Huff will not add enough to get us to the post-season. A guy like Johnny Damon MIGHT have done that. The biggest cost in signing Huff is not his salary, it’s the opportunity cost of not having an actual difference-maker on the roster.

Merkin Valdez? Manuel Mateo? A rose by any other name...

by rotorueter on Jan 10, 2010 8:02 PM PST up reply actions

The other players like Johnny Damon and Adam LaRoche present another opportunity cost because the second and third years of their contracts prevent the Giants from using their salary to sign better players in the stronger free agent markets.

That’s why I prefer this signing to the offer rejected by LaRoche, or any similar one that may have otherwise been given to Johnny Damon.

by dregarx on Jan 10, 2010 10:11 PM PST up reply actions

Except that this signing each day that passes makes it increasingly less likely that those players will get a second or third year.

by Bhaakon on Jan 11, 2010 2:06 AM PST up reply actions

That’s a valid point.

However, whether or not their value will ever fall that low is still a wait-and-see proposition, and dependent upon the Giants’ participation in their bidding.

LaRoche has shown no indication that he will accept a 2-year deal, let alone a 1-year deal, so I’ll use Damon as my example.

If he does end up getting a 1-year deal, the Giants removing themselves from the bidding by signing Huff is a factor in driving down his price.

So you see how, in the end, a definitive form of your assertion is unproveable.

by dregarx on Jan 11, 2010 2:14 AM PST up reply actions

A 33-year-old with no speed, lousy defense, and mediocre OBP skills is old. Those are the players who are often out of the league before they turn 35.

It’s a minor investment, and one where there is a chance he will be 2-3 WAR, which would make for a pretty solid return.

While Ishikawa will not be filling in for him, there are enough flexible vets around (Uribe, DeRosa) to satisfy Bochy’s love of veteran-filled lineups so that if Huff is doing badly, he will get benched, unlike Renteria.

I’ve been on record saying I’d like him a dozen times. But Huff is a different choice. Choosing LaRoche means you have your 1B for two years at least. Choosing Huff is hoping for the best for a year, then seeing if better options emerge.

1)LaRoche is fine for two years, I don’t really see that as a negative in his case 2) There’s no guarrantee that he’d even get a second year, 3) Huff isn’t any better than what we already have (and worse than what the team gave up in Garko).

I’d still pick Garko here.

He’d part of an operating platoon with Ishikawa in a best-case scenario. Ishi is LH, Bowker is LH, Pablo hits switch…. It’s a Sabean issue, shall we put it. He’s not being the smartest one with this preference.

by dregarx on Jan 10, 2010 10:33 PM PST up reply actions

Garko might be RH

But he hits lefties far better. Huff, at least, hits righties. That makes him better 2/3 of the time.

Actually It Is Likely That Garko Would Of Cost The Same In Arbitration

The Giants have decided that the prefer a Huff/Uribe platoon to a Ishikawa/Garko platoon and i can understand their thinking. That said, the smalll upgrades the Giants have decided to sign as opposed to getting more significant upgrades is disappointing to me and I am not a happy camper.

But in July, he went nuts posting a million articles about the Holliday trade and the Garko (?) trade I think and got banned for it, I think. He was insistent that the Giants should trade Espinelli and a bunch of trash for Holliday, as I recall.

That is not difficult to understand. They attempted on johnson and laroche and it didnt work out. To get Huff at 3 mill vs laroche price is a steal. Especially since he didnt want to come here.

I’m only comparing 2009 because that’s the only apple to apples comparison available. You’ll notice that, when I compared Huff to LaRoche, I used five years, including Huff’s fluke year in 2008. So It Is Ok To Just Ignore That Because That Doesn’t Support Your View?

So, the guys who’re arguing most strongly for this signing are GRM and the Geno Espineli = ASIAN FANS UP THE BUTTLOAD!!!!!! guy. Yeah, I’m pretty sure this is a dumb move.

In fact I have specifically said I am not a fan of this signing . Don’t confuse the fact that I can understand what Sabean is thinking and that there is some logic to his thinking with support for the signing..

No actually there isn’t. If you’ve followed Sabeans LONG career, and how he approaches free agency and trade, you’ll see that there is very little logic or foresight behind it. It’s all reactionary and inefficient. This front office is not ahead of the curve, or even on the curve, we just have to accept that.

Giants agree to terms on one-year deal with Huff
Provided by PA Sports

By JANIE McCAULEY
AP Baseball Writer

SAN FRANCISCO — A person with knowledge of the negotiations
says the San Francisco Giants and first baseman Aubrey Huff have
agreed to a one-year contract pending a physical.

The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the team
hasn’t made a formal announcement, which might not come until
later in the week.

Acquiring a reliable left-handed bat was one of Giants general
manager Brian Sabean’s top priorities before spring training
starts next month.

Huff, 33, was traded from Baltimore to Detroit in August. He
batted .241 with 15 homers and 85 RBIs in 150 games between the
two teams.

Despite Past failures (see Garko, Ryan)

This is not an abominable move. It doesn’t hamper the team for years to come, and if used right, Huff can be extremely valuable. I can see huff excelling vs RHP at 1B(thats where his career* marks show him as competent), while against LHP Pablo shifts over to 1B while Uribe mans 3B. That would be ideal, but we know Bochy won’t use him that way.

Does everyone realize they giants made 2 huge bargain signings

Uribe and Huff signed for less combined than the money hungry laroche was demanding. 1 yr, low risk, high upside additions. If there are better alternatives, i dont see it. Now moving onto Dye completes a very cost effective, solid overall improvement for this 2010 offense

Offense isn’t everything, and even at that Jermaine Dye is not very good. Please, get educated. Jermaine Dye doesn’t bring anything. Either you’re a troll, or just consistently neglecting the facts. This blog is for baseball enthusiasts who understand what it takes to be a solid ballplayer. Unfortunately, you are a lot like giants management when it comes to that. Fantastic move

Huff’s 162-game average (over his 10-year career):

.282/.340/.472/.812 with 25 HR, 92 RBI

His only “off” year was in 2009 when, while splitting time between Detroit and Baltimore, he batted .241 with 15 HR and 85 RBI.

In 2008, Huff hit .304 with 32 HR and 108 RBI for the Orioles and won the Silver Slugger Award.

This move alone gives the Giants a serious shot at the NL West title.

In ‘05, yes Huff’s OPS+ was 0.98. But he did hit 22 HR with 92 RBI. In 2007, he batted .280 with 15 HR and 72 RBI. Every player will have an off year or two. I think the Giants are hoping for a bounce-back year in 2010 for Huff and for $3M, it’s certainly a low risk.

It's about individuals when you're talking about evaluating individual performance

Like, for instance, trying to determine if a specific player is good or not.

RBIs measure a team effort (getting on base then getting hit in), and thus are useless for determining individual player value.

It means this guy can knock in runs. And for a team like the Giants, that counts for something.

22g

by 22gigantes on Jan 10, 2010 10:23 PM PST up reply actions

But the lineup he’ll be hitting in with the Giants is not the same as the lineup he hit in on his other teams. That is the point. He’s not a guy who has the talent to hit in 95 runs or whatever, he’s a guy who – in the right situation – can hit well enough to knock in some runs if he has the opportunity. The Giants lineup, as currently constructed, is not a great opportunity to drive in runs.

RBIs

They are not a indicator of a player’s performance, merely a representative of how many hits a player has accumulated with runners on base. Therefore, never again use RBIs to justify a player’s prowess

But it’s not necessarily something that is consistent from year to year.

For example, Audrey Horne has hit .276/.363/.466 for his career with RISP – about the same as his overall career line of .282/.340/.472.

In 2009, he hit .306/.391/.500 with RISP
in 2008, he hit .320/.406/.536
in 2007, he hit .273/.343/.493
in 2006, he hit .181/.207/.304
in 2005, he hit .285/.375/.563

see? not really consistent – not bad or anything, but he doesn’t appear to have any sort of ability to consistently hit awesomely with RISP

I think where I’m at is just that I think if someone at the end of the year has 100 rbis that tells me a lot about the year they had. I’m not saying that they’ll get that many or more or less the next year but there was 100 runs that they at least helped to put on the board.
So I’m not saying we should be making roster moves based on rbi’s but I wouldn’t call them completely meaningless in how a players season should be evaluated after the fact.

Even if the Giants had signed a block of wood to play 1b, thereby keeping Pablo at 3rd and eliminating the possibility of the Velorres monstrosity in LF, that would have some merit all by itself.

Now, all Huff needs to do is focus on out-producing a block of wood.

From MLB Trade Rumors
Huff, 33, hit .241/.310/.384 in 2009. He will presumably pick up some at bats from Travis Ishikawa, who is seven years younger than Huff and plays better defense. Ishikawa hit .261/.329/.387 last year in 113 games at first base, so he was more productive than Huff at the plate, too.

The ZIPS, CHONE, and PECOTA are pretty much the three most serious projection systems.

This mistake gets made in political polling all the time. James leads Smith 47-44 with a 4% MOE. Many commentators refer to this as a dead heat; the truth is that while we cannot say with 95% confidence that James is ahead, it is still more likely than not that James is ahead.

Hmmm ok...

Hand-calculating Huff’s career wOBA puts him at .349. We’ll put him at first, since that’s where he’s most likely going to play.

Assuming .333 for league average, that puts him about 10 runs above average
His career UZR/150 at first is -4 runs below average. Add in the positional adjustment of -12.5 for first, and that nets -6.5 runs below average. Add ~20 runs for replacement, and voila, that’s about a 1.35 WAR player over 700 PA’s. Over 600 PAs, that makes him an approximate 1.15 WAR player.

On the other hand Rowand and F.Sanchez had .323 wOBAs last year that resulted in only slightly negative Batting Value.

I know you nerds know NOTHING about the real game of baseball, or any other athletic endeavor requiring teamwork under physical stress.

Stat Corner's wOBA Doesn't Match Fangraphs

Just look up Pablo Sandoval on both sites. Stat Corner shows him with a .411 wOBA while Fangraphs shows his wOBA as .396. Therefore you can not use Stat Corner’s MLB Average wOBA to compare to Fangraphs wOBA for an individual player.

by giantsrainman on Jan 11, 2010 2:57 PM PST up reply actions

I think StatCorner includes RBOE’s in their wOBA (like Tango does) and FanGraph’s doesn’t.

THEREFORE YOU CANNOT USE IT!

Doesn’t FG use some sort of SB/CS in their wOBA? Fast guys get lots of RBOE’s so they’ll get penalized somewhat by FG. It’s why Fred Lewis has a .342 wOBA by SC — he had 5 RBOE’s. RBOE’s are essentially weighted the same as singles in wOBA.

Oh, You Can Use It

But you can’t compare a Fangraphs wOBA for an individual player (either projected or actual) to Stat Corner’s League average wOBA.

by giantsrainman on Jan 11, 2010 5:15 PM PST up reply actions

Sure you can. Tango himself said LgwOBA is around .330-.340 depending on the offensive year. It’s not like SC is spitting out some crazy wOBA number. But you should be aware that FG calculates wOBA a little differently than intended.

by xanthan on Jan 11, 2010 5:21 PM PST up reply actions

I Know You Are Not This Dense

All of Fangraphs’ wOBAs are lower then Stat Corners’. To know how an individual player compares to average using Fangraphs’ wOBAs you have to know and compare to Fangraphs’ lower average wOBA not to Stat Corner’s higher average wOBA. To do otherwise is just not valid.

by giantsrainman on Jan 11, 2010 5:46 PM PST up reply actions

P.S.

This applies to the Chone and Bill James projected wOBAs on Fangraphs as well as they to are calculated by Fangraphs and thus have a lower base then Stats Corner.

by giantsrainman on Jan 11, 2010 5:49 PM PST up reply actions

No, not all of FG’s wOBAs are lower. But, for certain players you’ll find they’ll be different. For example, in FG’s wOBA they account for SB/CS. So, guys that can steal bases at a good clip should do better by FG.

For example in 2007 Brian Roberts stole 50 bases vs. 7 caught stealings. His FG’s wOBA is .367 for that season. His SC wOBA was .358.

Apples And Oranges

Only if the goal of the comparison is to learn the differences in measurement techniques (difference between the apples and the oranges if you will) does comparing one to the other make sense.

Comparing an individual players wOBA in one to league average wOBA in the other produces unreliable results that do not actually determine where that player is relative to league average.

I think Fangraphs includes SB/CS, whereas Statcorner doesn't.

Either Graham or Matthew had a post about it on their statcorner blog, but that blog got spammed like crazy, so they wiped it out.

I don't hate this

You can never have too much depth and guys who can play multiple positions (see 2009-2010 Portland Trail Blazers) and Huff is a good hitter, or at least he was in recent memory with Tampa and Baltimore. So was DeRosa for that matter (with the Cubs and Indians sort of) and they’re both short contracts. Really, if we couldn’t get Bay or Holliday, I don’t mind getting a couple veteran guys with versatility.

At last, Sabean’s methodology becomes clear: he thinks he’s running a basketball team.

by Evan on Jan 11, 2010 1:49 PM PST up reply actions

Exactly

He needs more size at the 3 position.

He must have been impressed with Huff’s length.

Just HORRIBLE

The Giants either need to tryout the young guys they have or start trading them.. im sick and tired of watchin young prospects get shafted over some 34 yr old has bins.. this is just horrible, can they do anything right! I’m tired of all this crap, i would rather have a minor league team playing in the majors than a 1992 all star team. They aren’t even gearing themselves up for next year or the following… The money is just going to get tighter and tighter as Timmy, Cain, & Panda keep earning those pay raises. And lets not forget about Bummy & J-San…. We need to trade pitching to get legit hitting this never ending cycle of old vets on the team ends!

We dont need to trade pitching, we jut need to actually sing a good free agent

Trading pitching to get hitting is not going to change Sabean’s veteran-signing plans one whit.

Let's Play a Lineup Game!

The Kids: Lewis, Posey, Sandoval, Bowker, Schierholtz, Frandsen, Ishikawa, Amezaga

Sabean's Vets: Rowand, Sanchez, DeRosa, Sandoval, Huff, Renteria, Schierholtz, Posey

The Kids' CHONE WAR projection= 12.7
Sabean's Vets' CHONE War projection= 13.5

by dregarx on Jan 13, 2010 12:32 AM PST up reply actions

I don't understand how either Posey, Schierholtz or Sandoval qualify as "Vets".

And this relates to what I’m saying how?

If Sabean trades, say, MadBum and Sanchez to get Prince Fielder and some other Brewer hitter, that’s not going to stop him from signing the “never ending cycle of old vets”. He’ll just sign pitchers to fill the gap.

Oh.

Put it this way. “Sabean’s Vets” is the team that he’s put together so far. If he signs Torrealba I’ll replace Posey but I’d rather not because Yorvit’s projection is so much worse than Posey’s it felt unfair.

Same thing with Dye for Nate.

“The Kids” is what you get if Sabean made no position player signings for the last 3-4 years.

whoa

Signing Mark DeRosa and Huff were not the only options out there.. you dont need to go blow $12 million on a 34yr old player who was not re-signed by one of the top lineups in the majors. There is a reason why the Cards did not want him back. Do you really think he is going to succeed with the giants.. I guarantee he will not produce the numbers bengie produced. he might barely produce bengie’s shittiest year which was last year 20hrs, 80rbi, .265 with only 68ks in a 132 games. The Giants are wasting their money… what they should be doing is starting sign some of those pitchers into some long term deals. If you are not going to do that, then you are seriously f-k’d in 2 yrs. Matt Cain’s contracted expires in 2011 so you better figure out a way to have him, Timmy, and Zito all in one rotation. do you not see it. the giants WILL not WIN a WORLD SERIES WITH THE LINEUP THEY HAVE! THEY WILL NOT WIN A WORLD SERIES WITH JUST HAVING THAT ROTATION! Everyone thinks we should hold tight with the pitchers we have, but without hitting, you will not go anywhere… I want a WORLD CHAMPION TEAM, i dont want a team that might make it to the playoffs. I want a team that is going to make it to the playoffs and have a chance to win the world series. this team is not going to do anything. We have a lot of pitching and no hitting.. what do you think we should do? it is simple, trade some ptiching for some hitting.. and when i say trade for hitting, im not talking about the AJ Pierzynski trade, i want a bonifade hitter like Prince Fielder or Adrian Gonzalez.. its simple. The only way the Giants can keep those Zito, Timmy , and Cain in the rotation is if 1) they open up their pockets or 2) keep doing what they are doign and signing all free agents who are washed up ( DeRosa, Huff, Renteria, Rowand).. Marlins definitely know what they are doing. Just look at the Josh Beckett trade.

The Cards Did Want Him Back To Play 3B

They just didn’t want to commit until they knew how much Holiday was going to cost them and by then it was too late.

I just pointed out what really should be obvious that veterans were all the Giants had to choose from in free agency.
