The Rockies Amazing Bench
First off, this is not a gloom and doom post about the greatness of the Rockies and how we can't beat them. I was just examining their team recently and I have to say, their bench with expanded rosters is perhaps the most amazing bench I have ever seen. No, it's not the reason they are winning, but I just find it remarkable. Here is the lineup you can make just off of their bench players
LF Seth Smith
1B Jason Giambi
3B Garret Atkins
RF Matt Murton
I mean just look at that lineup. That is probably a league average lineup, if not better. Defensively it's poor, but it's not absurdly bad either.
I just find it very impressive. Can anyone think of a better bench in MLB history?

Yay! Another post celebrating the Rockies!

I would insert a Tulo joke, but I’m next in line to that ledge you’re jumping off of myself.

Don’t forget their go-to-guy when they needed a pinch runner with the game on the line tonight…Jason Marquis! (odd for september ball huh?)

Some people can look at the race and say “Gee the Rockies are kicking ass, well no wonder, look at the talent they have.” And maybe on some level feel a little bit better about how the Giants are doing.
In this case though, that doesn’t work for me. ’Cuz see, to my mind the Rockies are beating everybody, and then I look at the Giants, and all I see… is a team that is beating is itself.

they also have a bunch of hitters you want up there with the game on the line, like Helton, Smith, Hawpe, and Tulo, while we don’t have a single one. Pablo will be one soon, but not yet. That being said, fuck the Rockies. Stop praising them like they’re the greatest team of all time. They’ve been behind us most of the season and we can’t hit for shit.

doesn't that explain the phenomenon?
The Giants have a much better bench- unfortunately they all start on a regular basis.

rockies
…. have 5 outfielders that could start over any of ours. after this season, i predict they move hawpe and his @ 10 mil in salary to improve in other areas. they become just as good, while more athletic in the OF with a lf s.smith, cf fowler, rf cargo outfield. those 3 COMBINED will have a salary pretty much LESS THAN howry makes this year BY HIMSELF….. i feel sick.

Howry?
really? is that the contract on this team that bothers you?

Yeah, the contract stuff is irrelevant...
…except viewed at the whole team level. I mean, you could also point out that the Giants have Cain, Lincecum, Jonathan Sanchez, Brian Wilson and Sergio Romo and combined they cost less than the Rockies are paying Aaron Cook. Talented pre-arb players are always gonna be a great value; the Rockies have a bunch in the field, Giants have a bunch on the mound.

what’s funny to me is that Howry signed a heavily incentive laden deal based on numbers of games finished. I think at the time he signed it, he envisioned himself taking the closer’s job away from Brian Wilson. He would have been better off signing a deal that paid him extra for the amount of meaningless mop up games he appeared in.

The really sad thing is that most of these guys on the Rockies bench would probably be starters on the GIants. That just sums up the Giant’s offensive issues very nicely……as if we didn’t already know this.

That is probably a league average lineup, if not better.
Bit of an overstatement, don’t you think? Atkins has an OPS+ of 65 this year. Spilborghs is at 86, Murton at 96. Eric Young is at 92 and is probably over his head. Quintanilla is at 30; his career OPS+ is 45.
Seth Smith is a fine player, but he’s a platoon regular at this point.

We’re just swayed by how bad the Giants offense is, a below average offense look awesome

Yeah, but Garrett Atkins by and large has been a very produtive hitter with an OPS+ above 100 his entire career. This is clealry more of an aberration than his true talent level. Spilborghs and Murton are pretty cloe to league average, Smith is above it, Giambi has generally been above it, as has Iannetta, and EY is definitely league average for position (and plus with speed). Quintanilla is crap, but hey, it’s still a good lineup

Giants bench
Bowker, Schierholtz, Ishikawa, Torres, Lewis, Aurillia, Posey, etc. not too shabby. Not any worse than their starting lineup except for Pablo.
by bradleybear on Sep 10, 2009 9:58 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
seriously.
LF Lewis or Bowker > Velez
2B Uribe > Sanchez
3B Pablo = Pablo
C Posey > Bengie
RF Schierholtz > Winn
1B Ishikawa meh…
CF Torres > Rowand
SS Frandsen > Renteria
given 8 choices, it seems the giants will make the wrong choice 6 times. cant argue with the maths.

now that i think about it
Uribe > Renteria
Frandsen > Renteria
Velez > Renteria
Aurilia > Renteria
Grandma with an oven mitt and a wheelchair > Renteria

Sanchez > Uribe except that currently Sanchez = injured
Rowand > Torres unless you ignore everything before this year and believe in platoon-based small sample sizes
Otherwise, you’re pretty much right on.
