Maybe it's the Rockies year..............

For the longest time, I could not convince myself that the Rockies were actually good.  They have a solid pitching staff but definitely not one of the tops in the NL, and a bunch of .220 hitters with a lot of power.  To me, that doesn't calculate to a team that is about 18 games over .500.  Outside of Helton and Tulowitzki I can't see any real solid hitters in that Rockies lineup.  Here's the difference though, the Rockies are a team this year that knows how to win from behind and close games.  If you give the Rockies no more than 2 run deficit going into the 8th inning, they are most likely to come back and win that game.  They are a great 8th and 9th inning team, just spectacular.

I keep telling myself how lucky they are.  Just within the last couple of nights, they came back from losing 4-2 in the 8th and came back to win.  Tonight, they were down by 2 with Seth Smith up to the plate in the bottom of the ninth, and with 2 strikes and 2 outs, he gets a walk-off two run single.  In addition, the hit came off of a play that Brandon Phillips would have normally made.  Also, I hate to bring this up but how often are you going to have Ryan Spilborghs hit a walk off grand slam down by 2 in the bottom of the 14th.  The Rockies, despite any early (or late) deficit, know how to win games.  Whether the Rockies are the luckiest team in the NL or not, it doesn't matter.  What does matter is that whatever is happening to them is happening for a reason, and it just indicates that it may be the Rockies season.

In addition, the Giants can't do the little things like bunt guys over.  Our fundamentals are atrocious, and despite that we still shouldn't lose a home series against the Padres.  Especially in the position that we're in, it is unacceptable.  If it isn't already apparent taht the Giants won't make the playoffs, it will be by next Wednesday after the Rockies leave San Francisco.

This may sound pessimistic, but I realize that this is a rebuilding season and we still have a bright future (more so than any other teams in our division).  It's just dissapointing because they are so close, but yet so far away.  No matter how the Giants end this season, it has been a fun one.

Great Post

You got guts posting it here, but we shouldnt be blind enough to see that it isn’t the Giant’s year. The Rockies have just unleashed this winning streak and are probably playing their best baseball in a while…..it just makes sense, i agree it was fun for me. I cared this year, instead of caring once every 5 days last year. Hopefully next year we sign a big bat and we become division contenders instead of Wild Card ones

For the love of God, they don’t need to learn to bunt! (At least, that’s not their biggest problem, or their second biggest…) They need to learn to hit! They have a team OBP of .304! That’s almost impossibly bad. They don’t need to figure out better ways to make outs; they need to figure out how not to make outs in the first place.

So many times rockies come back in last 2 innings at home.

One cannot deny the humidor factor. Not just 220 hitters plus the two hitters mentioned in the post. Seth Smith has been totally clutch. Not only did Phillips, who played great vs the giants, misplay that ball, could have been an error, he falls down, and the second run comes in. Almost looked like someone was taking Pete Rose money on the side. ONLY hope the giants have, is to reel off at least a ten game win streak. Even that may not be enough.

by bradleybear on Sep 10, 2009 8:03 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

220 hitters with power, better than 260-270 hitters without power.

Teams like the fish with lower averages but more power, ( except for Hanley Ramirez) and the Rockies, score a lot more runs than the giants, with less power. But its not just power, giants, as everyone knows, just do not take the walks. On these other teams, taking a few walks, pitcher comes in a little more and a blast. I continually see giants pitchers approaching 100 pitcher in the 5th and 6th inning, while the opposition pitcher is usually around 60 pitches. I blame more on the hitters, than our pitchers.

Next year Bowker has to play whether its in the outfield or at first base. The guy could easity be one of those 25 homer guys, and I expect he will hit a lot higher than 220. He needs to be in the lineup, adjusting to major league pitching.

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE

End this productive outs bullshit! I am tired of crap. If you need a refresher, please read Grant’s post from 6 days ago:

http://www.mccoveychronicles.com/2009/9/4/1015064/whats-wrong-with-the-giants

The Giants offense sucks because they make too many outs and can’t get on base. They hack, hack, hack. End of story. This should be a case study in offensive ineptitude and the strengths of statistical analysis, yet this inability to “play the game right” like the Rockies (really?) keeps coming up. If there is a way the Giants don’t play the game right, it’s that they don’t take pitches.

Also, when you blame one guy for not getting a bunt down in one situation of a game that requires 27 outs, you are neglecting the rest of the team who managed 5 hits and 3 walks from a guy who has a FIP over 6.00.

Also, I just noticed this on the sfgiants page:
http://sanfrancisco.giants.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20090909&content_id=6875996&vkey=recap&fext=.jsp&c_id=sf

Btw, this isn’t directed at the OP, I am just frustrated that people put so much stock into how the Giants play the game instead of realizing that the components just suck really hard.

It's not just that

It’s that the Giants have actually been savagely clutch this season. They turn baserunners into runs at an exceptionally high rate.

Not that I think that’s sustainable, but whether you see it as luck OR “doing the little things,” either way, it’s clearly one of the few offensive skills the Giants are NOT bad at.

I hate the Rockies

I’m deeply frustrated that the Giants are not keeping pace with the Rockies. Rockies win 6 in a row (higher than any win streak we have had this year) and we respond by losing 3 of 4, not exactly the response you want from a team trying to find some swagger to get into the postseason.

However, I think the next 2 series can and will answer a lot of questions, and can change the dynamics of the race in the NL West.

Rockies – We have 1 last series with them, at home. Obviously it will be a huge series and we only have those 3 games before we have to rely on the ARZ, SD, STL, MIL LA to do some damage. We gotta win that series at the very least to give us any shot.

Dodgers. We have 2 more series against them and 1 @ home. The last series could become a serious issue if the Rockies continue their streak and the Dodgers continue to show some signs of vulnerability. They play WSH, PIT, and SD before ending in COL. I don’t expect any help whatsoever from their easy schedule, but man would it be hilarious if they went on an epic losing streak against 3 horrible teams? Mmmm Dodger tears are delicious.

I fully expect to go 3-3 or 4-2 in the next 2 series, which will keep us in it but not gain much ground.

COL has a harder schedule but is playing with gusto, and LA has an easy scedule but doesn’t have the momentum COL has. I’d say that puts them almost dead even.

In conclusion we’re definitely down but not out, and streaks like the Rockies have can go away very fast… especially against STL and MIL and ending in LA. LA will just keep chugging along but its not improbable for them to suddenly drop the ball and let COL take the lead, and then we creep in above LA.

If were out I fully expect to see Posey, Frandsen, and Lewis playing.

by Giant Voodoo on Sep 10, 2009 11:54 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Since you brought up our lack of a big winning streak this year...

Winning streaks of more than five games are a result of timely hitting and great pitching. You need solid performances from your starters, since at least once during a week’s worth of games your offense will run into a team’s #1 starter and have trouble manufacturing runs. You also need to be able to manufacture runs, since at least once during a week’s worth of games your starting pitcher might not have his best stuff, or your bullpen gets torched. In other words, in any big winning streak there are probably some 10-8 and 2-1 games that you normally don’t win but do this time—sure, there’s luck involved (see: Brandon Phillips missing that ball last night) but more so because your hitters get hot, and they have smart at-bats, make the starter throw a lot of pitches, take walks, steal bases, etc.

It’s kind of a chicken-and-egg argument, but the fact that the Giants haven’t won more than 5 games in a row this season is because their plate approach has been so poor, and because their plate approach has been so poor they haven’t won more than 5 games in a row. (This is to say nothing of Bruce Bochy’s managing). So to think they have a chance to catch either the Dodgers or Rockies for a playoff spot assumes that they’ll have to go on a pretty big winning streak, which supposes that they’ll have to exponentially improve their at-bats in the next three weeks.

Asking a team to do something well for three weeks that they’ve done poorly for the past five and a half months is the ultimate longshot bet. I’m not saying it’s impossible, but it’s extremely unlikely.

Seriously, all these comeback wins the Rockies are pulling off really makes me wonder who is in charge of the humidifier and how it is regulated. Yeah, it blows my mind that there’s not an umpire or some other MLB official who is in charge of that thing. The potential for abuse is pretty apparent. Even if they’re not bringing out non-humidified balls for their opponents to throw them in the bottom of the 9th when they’re behind, how could you blame people for suspecting it, when there’s (apparently) nothing stopping them from doing so.

The thing is, though...

…that the Rockies’ home record is no better – in fact slightly worse – than the Giants’. The difference is that they’re 36-33 on the road while the Giants are 31-41.

This is because the Giants do not know how to win yet. In Baseball, it is better to be a dullard than a smarty-pants, so not knowing something is perfectly acceptable. Therefore, complaining about the Giants’ record, or performance in any one area, of any particular player or group of players, managerial decisions, executive management philosophies and in-game strategies is a waste of time and speaks more about us than it does about the team.

Well, then someone should tell them to score more runs than the other team.
