from the BA prospect blog. A good reminder of why not to over react about the loss of velocity, while also retain concern about it.

Pitch off the fastball

Pitch off the fastball.

Proud father of Juan Carlos Perez. Think Albert Pujols at a position to be determined.

I'm not worried just yet...

The guy can still be effective at 87-89, but guys like Jerome Williams never really hit the velocities they were supposedly clocked at either.

Still, no reason to worry, although I’m sure half the Giants fans who aren’t worried at all about this velo are the same people fine with losign Alderson because “he lost MPH on the FB!”

the Alderson point is a really good one. I definitely talked myself into accepting the trade because of the decline in K’s and velocity. But I was at the game last night and while the velocity was Zito-escque. Other than the first inning, his control was outstanding and I think he is going to be good. And if not, he is definitely an Ankiel type hitting prospect. Dude can mash!

I’m not all that worried yet. It really is common for the fastball velocity of young pitchers to fluctuate. If he regains his velocity, I’ll be glad he had this stretch, since it gave him some good experience pitching with lackluster stuff.

The thing with Alderson, though, is that not only did his velocity drop, he struggled a bit too. Bumgarner was still very good even with the lessened velocity—sure his k/9 dropped, but that doesn’t mean he struggled. ERA was still sparkling, FIP decent, and a number other peripheral stats good to very good. Alderson never should an ability to pitch off his fastball, and ‘pitching backwards’ approach may not have played well at higher levels, especially with a fastball that never developed much. I still wish they wouldn’t have given him up, for Freddie Sanzhez though!

I was at the game and his motion looked like he was throwing against his body, not with it. I’m not an expert on pitching mechanics, but it just seemed really awkward and inefficient. If it was anybody besides the Padres I think he would’ve gotten rocked. Chase Headley hit a home run and that dude sucks!
