Apparently the rest of baseball is just as mystified by Bochy's decisions as we are.

"Holy mother of dumb"

Yeah, that’s about right.

Again, it brings up the discussion of how much influence a manager actually has on the outcome of a game. In Bochy’s case, I’d have to say a lot, since he starts up with an effed up lineup every day, and won’t give a look to one of the most promising players in the dugout.

If he’s even seriously considered for manager of the year, I’m going to say a curse word out loud.

It's my blarg! Quick Pitch
And I tweet (more often than I blarg).

Exactly, re: influence. Usually even the worst tactical managers can be counted on to play the best players on the roster regularly.

Pitching problems aside, I miss the days when I would get riled up when Felipe Alou would use Jose Vizcaino as his primary pinch hitter—-at least Alou would start the best players at the beginning of the game!

Merkin Valdez? Manuel Mateo? A rose by any other name...

Do you miss the days when Jose Vizcaino was our starting first baseman?

I totally forgot about that. Never mind.

I’m convinced that switching Travis Ishikawa from 4th to 8th in the lineup on a daily basis (or whenever he sees PT) cannot be good for his mental health. I mean, it definitely would’ve messed me up in little league. My logic is sound.

I can't argue with this

First, please note that “power ranking” type articles are usually written by people who don’t spend much time with each team and therefore rely on cleverness over substantial insight to get their opinions across.

Second, let’s break down this guy’s complaints:

>>I don’t understand the batting orders, which fluctuate wildly from one day to the next and rarely take into account things like on-base percentage.

Things like OBP are hard to find anywhere on the Giants’ roster. Fred Lewis has a good OBP, but Fred Lewis also plays suspicious defense. Pablo Sandoval has an excellent OBP, but he’s right where he should be. Is this writer complaining about Randy Winn? Hey pal, have you seen Nate Schierholtz’s OBP lately? Bochy doesn’t have much to work with.

>I don’t understand his bullpen management, which combines the ride-your-horses sadism of Joe Torre’s approach with the I-could-care-less surrender of Lou Piniella’s.

Really? What’s the evidence of either, though I suspect the writer just plucked these two fun analogies out of the air.

>I really, really, really don’t understand the decision to keep the organization’s most capable backstop, Buster Posey, stapled to the bench at a time when the Giants lack anything resembling a coherent offense.

Most capable backstop? Does he take into account, say, the need to catch nine innings and throw out baserunners? No, he simply wants to see Posey hit, as we all do. But that doesn’t mean we want to see him become the everyday catcher, which I assume is this guy’s complaint, since he’s talking about Posey in the context of lineups.

I don’t agree with the bullpen comment either, but you really don’t have any problems with Bochy’s lineup management? Bengie Molina, he of the 2nd worst OBP in Major League Baseball not only playing, but batting cleanup? Winn leading the team in PA’s going into today’s game? Schierholtz might not be outplaying Winn when he does play, but at least he’s young with a much better chance of improving on that production than Winn. Playing Renteria as often as he has. Playing Lewis as little as he has. I don’t need to go through all the examples, there are plenty to show how terribly the lineup construction/playing time has been done this year. I don’t really think there are any valid arguments against this point.

“I don’t really think there are any valid arguments against this point.”

I do.

I’m not a Bochy fan by any means, but come on. He can only work with what Sabean gives him.

If not Molina batting cleanup then who? what are the options? Rowand? Gimme a break. Garko? Ummm………no. Schierholz? Ishikawa? How ‘bout Velez? Uribe? Maybe for the past week. Come on. I don’t like Molina batting cleanup either. But no matter who bats cleanup, we’re going to hear and read the same things. Why? Because THE GIANTS DO NOT HAVE A CLEANUP HITTER.

Winn leads in PA’s but again, what are the options? Lewis? He has proven he’s not an everyday ballplayer. Schierholz? Probably a better option at this point than Winn but at the beginning of the year would you rather have had an outfield of an unproven Lewis, unproven Schierholz and overpaid/ overrated Rowand? Or would you rather have had Winn. I agree that he probably has had too long of a leash. Torres? Nice 5th OF but there’s a reason why he’s bounced around so much. But again, it’s about options. The Giants have little to none.

Lewis playing little? He is a 4th OF on his best days. 16 RBI’s. SIXTEEN!!!!! In almost 300 AB’s. Come on. It’s not like he’s a .300 hitter. And i don’t have to mention his defense. but i just did.

I do not fault Bochy for playing with the lineup to find something that works. He’s trying to squeeze blood from 10 pounds of sh!t. Or stuff 5 pounds of turnips in a bloody sack. Well……whatever…………but bottom line is that this is one of the worst offenses EVER. Right up there with last year’s team.

If the Giants had anything resembling an offense, with this pitching, he probably would be getting some mangaer of the year votes.

RIBBIES!!1

I know you nerds know NOTHING about the real game of baseball, or any other athletic endeavor requiring teamwork under physical stress.

The problem is you don’t look at the right stats. We do not have a cleanup hitter (well, Pablo is, but he’s hitting 3rd so there’s nothing wrong with that), that is correct. However, anyone is better than Molina. Anyone. He has the second worst OBP in major league baseball. Do you know how important not making an out is? Fred Lewis – no, he isn’t hitting .300, but he IS getting on base 35.7% of the time, which is above average. That’s also right in line with his career rate of 35.8%, so it isn’t a fluke. He is one of TWO players on our entire team that gets on base at a rate that’s average or above. He is a significantly better hitter than anyone else you mentioned. As for Winn – you’re right, Schieholtz hasn’t outperformed him so far this year. But while Schierholtz is young with the chance to actually improve, Winn is old and he’s most likely to get even worse. Why would you not go with the younger, cheaper guy?

Bochy managers the team the same way Sabean puts it together, and that’s the problem. You don’t fault them because you view baseball in the same way they do, which largely ignores the most important factors in scoring runs (mostly, not making an out).

I repeat- this is one of the worst offenses EVER. Right up there with last year’s team.
