Posey, Bowker memorial. Minor League scarecrows

We never knew you, but we loved you.  We never saw you, but then of course we were crying some of the time and some of the time we were drunk.

The summer of 2009 summoned our great hopes from somewhere in that hoping place, deep down beneath the heavy, heavy disillusionment place.  Damn, it's dark in the disillusionment place - hard to find the hoping place so you kind of have to keep digging.  Our hoping place told us that from somewhere else, somewhere very much outside of San Francisco (but not so far that Benji Molina wouldn't try to hit that place from the batter's box) we would find you.  You would be our batters and fielders, our run-scoring people - as soon as we did a little wiki research so we could know what the run-scoring people do.

We found you in Fresno and we bought you a ticket to our little hopefest where pitchers pitch and batters pitch too.  You were going to be the ones that combine with our pitchers to field one entire baseball team.  We would pitch, and field, and when the pitching and fielding was done?  Oh, my, when the fielding was done we would bat the ball.  And when the ball was batted it would leave the infield, a place we learned was just outside the batter's box - but not so far outside that Benji Molina wouldn't swing at it.  We even gave you uniforms.

And, oh, you thought those uniforms were for playing.  For playing!  For playing the game with the batted ball, but you must have understood after we pinch hitted for pitchers with pitchers that something was wrong.  You were so sharp, we loved that about you.  And I confess, we fans thought something was wrong too - and we whined and we cried.  We gesticulated, we genuflected, and in our spare time we merrily rosterbated.  We LOL'd, we bitched, we moaned with great moans, we may have self-medicated a little.  We and you were together, all of us wondering why you were here - batting ball people - if the ball you were never to bat.

Now we know, surely we know why you were here.  Now we know, surely we know you were here to bring fear.  Fear to the Molinas and Winns and Rowands.  Fear to the Rents and the 'Kawas and the non-Panda pwn-ends.  Fear to those swingers of bats at non-baseball objects.  Fear to non-fair-bunting, non-pitch-taking fail-jects.   You were fear for the gamers to get into gamer-type shape, to dive and run (though not past the plate).  To say that "we're in this" and hit the air with a punch, to wear some eye-black and play pepper and such.  To not suck, to not suck, to not suck to not suck.  But a-sucking they would do, with gusto and defensive tones they told us that we - with our hoping places - could all go to hell with our non-gamer faces.

Oh.  We also rhymed, because we knew you were too - in the dugout in new uniforms.  With nothing to do.

Jim Callis weighs in

Best line:

The Giants aren’t going to the posteason without scoring more runs, and Posey would provide them more offense. Failing to recognize that is just inexplicable.

My Bucardo is better than yours.

A hot August weekday, before a small crowd, when the only thing at stake is the tissue-thin difference between a thing done well and a thing done ill. Insofar as the clutch hitter is not a sportswriter's myth, it is a vulgarity, like a writer who writes only for money.

these guys, they must be brilliant. Strange that they’re able to outthink men with bigger heads

But, I mean, from the Giants perspective, which player in the lineup has been the problem with run-scoring?

They don’t really seem to think there’s anything wrong with the players who make up the starting lineup from day to day right now. I mean, which player in the lineup would you pick out as being likely thought of as a problem by the Giants management? I would say just Garko/Ishikawa – I truly believe that they think the production from everyone else who’s been playing more or less every day (Velez, Renteria, Sandoval, Molina, Rowand, Winn, Uribe/Sanchez) is good.

agreed. i wish I knew what they did with peripheral stats. I know they look at them. Lately I’ve wondered if they’re just afraid of screwing up chemistry. It’s an unwritten rule in baseball: you do not replace veterans in the midst of a pennant race. It’s a slap in the face. I really think that has something to do with it.

I don’t know – they obviously understand that our offense stinks, and they obviously understand that it has to do with our lineup. I’m sure Sabean knows Renteria is doing horribly, and I’m pretty sure that he’s aware that Molina and Winn have declined.

I guess I can believe Sabean does, but I don’t believe Bochy does.

Bold Prediction

I think Posey gets the start today. Giants going up against a lefty. Penny knows what he wants to throw so less pressure on Posey to call the right pitches. Giants are home. This is the perfect time to start him.

I said this exact thing 2 months ago

About Bowker. And, got called an idiot by several people. Time however, has a way of bringing the truth out and I have been proven right: Bowker never got played and the Giants still haven’t scored any runs. Worst case, Bochy plays Bowker and he’s awful, is that worse than what they’ve been on offense?

LOL at Giants being offended by Prince's walkoff HR celebration instead of the crappy way they played.

I don’t see anyone calling you an idiot. Bowker couldn’t have played since he was in Fresno anyway.

I know you nerds know NOTHING about the real game of baseball, or any other athletic endeavor requiring teamwork under physical stress.

Nobody said the word “idiot”. I inferred . Just a little perspective on that: I feel the replies to that comment were by far the strongest and most negative of any replies I have gotten on theses boards and I’m really perplexed as to why that simple statement of common sense riled people so much..

Btw, I knew that Bowker was in Fresno. Sabean could have called Bowker up at any time, I don’t really see what that has to do with anything but thanks to you and groug for pointing it out..

You are pretty wrong

as are the numbers… only Posey has never played in an MLB game, so only he must sit. When he’s out, he’s in.

more offense.

I have to wonder, just what kept the Giants from getting Barry Bonds just for the rest of this season. Yes, I am aware of his problems, but, I believe that his power, as well as his presence on the bench, would give opposing managers some food for thought. In football, Michael Vick, is back. What he did was far worse than anything Barry Bonds has been accused of. Not to mention that he is only one of many players, who now have been proven to have used steroids. So, why is the league singling him out for punishment? It seems that they do not like his beating out the former home run king. Reminds me of when Hank Aaron broke the Babe’s record. Same story, different player.

Probably something to do with him not having played baseball for two years.

At this point, I truly believe it’s not a matter of what he can or can’t do. It’s that the organization is finally out of his shadow, and Sabean has been able to turn the page from that era in SF Giants history. They seem to put a high value on chemistry/attitude/playing the game right, and the ego of the front office would never bring him back, no matter how much help he may provide.

STEVE HOLM! refuses to be the odd man out.
